Yippie! Look mom I'm in a drug magazine
>>
>>50873345
Somehow I didn't expect this to actually get made, let alone have this much effort put into it.
>>
>>50873345
Good job
>>
I seem to remember submitting a strawpage drawing of Marisa smoking weed while, in a, less-than-fully-clothed state, but I can’t find it in the zine. Did it not go through? Or was it perhaps purposefully excluded due to foreign anti-Japanese standards of modesty?
>>
Nice content + my fanart was included
Gladly waiting for next year's issue

We did not expect the overwhelmingly good response to the zine! thank you all so much

>>50873428
A lot of effort was put in the layout to contrast with the unserious zine theme. We're very pleased with the result.

>>50873639
I'm gonna be real with you anon, I just thought you had forgotten to put clothes on her. Don-t worry though, the zine has been updated to include this key addition.
>>
>>50875780
Not joking btw, we did update the zine to correct typos and all

I think I recognize most of the artstyles from /jp/'s OC threads. Not a lot seem to come from elsewhere. I think next time you would do well to build up more of a social media presence in the months leading up to the zine's release, primarily by retweeting (or whatever the equivalent is) art of Touhou artists who also like weed. Artists on other websites generally have a more professional mindset and seek to build publicity and presence (4chan's anonymous nature directly contradicts this goal which is why artists here are normally amateurs). Retweeting their art, as opposed to liking it, gives them more publicity making them think more highly of you and more likely to participate in the zine, and the further more noticeable interaction will bring more attention to the zine as well. Artists who have already established themselves professionally and take lots of commissions will have little interest in working for free, so you'll want to look for artists who have ambitions of doing commissions in the future and must build up their portfolio and skills beforehand.

Good work on getting something out. Hope you can keep going and it doesn't end up like the last /jp/ zine
>>
I never saw this. I would have drawn for it. I'll gladly draw for you next year, but where did you even post about this? I assume you just made a thread here and that's it? Why didn't you go to the OC thread? I would have probably seen it if you posted there. I don't check the catalogue often and usually just keep direct tabs to the threads I like up.

amazing zine.
>>
No thanks.
I think that weed, maybe in it's more natural form, taken in moderation, could've been helpful to spiritual enlightenment, but nowadays THC count has been engineered to be obscenely high, which has caused it to become unbalanced, and it lobotomizes your 'supernatural' senses.
It's become another excess end we are better off without it.

Thanks for the constructive criticism anon! we will take it into account for next year's edition. I so want to clarify that I did make social media accounts and did share the very few related art and memes I could find, but that wasn't to automatically translate into artists joining en masse, and I didn't expect that to happen either, as it was basically just me having to balance organising the zine with my very demanding full time job. In all honesty I thought we would get 2-3 submissions at most and I expected the zine to be a total flop, which is why I prepared many sketches myself in case the zine bombed. Thankfully the spirits of Gensokyo blessed us and we received many more submissions than expected.

However, by the time we open up submissions next year, we will try to improve the strategy and get ahead of the algorithms that tend to bury new accounts and projects like these. Another thing we will start preparing will be gathering people in physical spaces such as drawing clubs and anime cons. It's very easy to find weed smoking weirdos irl who would enjoy participating.

As for the submissions themselves, it is true that many came from /jp/ but the other half did come from me promoting the zine in dark forest spaces. For this edition I wanted to find people with unusual artstyles and complete amateurs who didn't feel confident enough to hold a pencil, as their art I find much more interesting than that of professional illustrators. But of course, we did get very professional looking submissions like picrel, which was a pleasing surprise.

Another aspect to take into account: the topic of weed is very controversial, and even here in the first thread some people seemed offended by the idea. If even people in 4chan act repulsed by a weed themed zine, imagine how the reaction would be in namespace. Because of this reason, hitting up Japanese artists was also off-limits. Had it been a different topic I would've built a Japanese language page and submission form to make a truly international zine :( this was also another reason why I aimed for unusual artstyles btw, as people with weird artstyles tend to scoff less at themes like this.

Still, thank you once again. We will return next year with an improved formula o7

Thank you anon. We are very excited for next year's volume.

I posted in the catalog only, sadly it didn't occur to me that the OC thread would be a good place to promote it. I hope you can participate next year anon.

First of all I recommend reading the very first article in the zine, but yours is very valid criticism actually and is the reason why I myself don't consume it anymore. Ironically enough though, full decriminalization would fix this issue as it would allow for different strains to be legally and ethically produced.

>First of all I recommend reading the very first article in the zine
It was a pleasant surprise to the historical context of hemp in Japanese culture.
>full decriminalization would fix this issue as it would allow for different strains to be legally and ethically produced.
I'm also in favor of decriminalization and complete de-regulation(since it'll just be rolled up into large industries if it's regulated) of cannabis, since I believe that 'vice laws' can only work on a local level(you and your neighbors and nothing beyond that) , but what worries me is that weed has become a cultural symbol of hedonism/liberal progressivism. For example: it's now strongly associated with Doritos, which are another obscenely-optimized chemical product. On the liberal end, I think high-THC weed might actually be stopping people from getting to the higher-level of consciousness and they're stuck at:
>Hey man, we should just all like, let each other do what we want as long as we don't hurt each-other.
When they should be getting to the level beyond that:
>Some people have irreconcilable differences in beliefs and must be allowed to practice, even if that means they exclude others, since those people should be able to establish their own space were they can also perform their own practice.

Sorry if this seems a little off-base, but I believe that pleasure-seeking behavior, inhibitors, regulation, and a lot of national progressive thought is pretty closely linked and while low-THC weed, ritualistically consumed, might elevate someone, my experience with smokers has been that weed is a clutch rather then a boon. So I'm averse to "Stoner Culture" in the same way as I'm averse to "Queer Art".

Thank you for hosting this, anon. It's nice to see my ugly tengu picture surrounded by much better art. If you ever go through with the alchohol zine I hope to contribute something much better.

>but what worries me is that weed has become a cultural symbol of hedonism/liberal progressivism.

Oh I actually fully agree with this. I've known people who can't function without weed and it's very upsetting. I don't think this silly unserious zine project was ever meant to position itself in the middle of the cultural conversation about weed. I do fully agree with your post though. Unfortunately this hedonist/neolib branding, so to say, affects many other substances and practices aside from weed (meditation comes to mind... ).

I wanted to contact him but I was unsure, given how he actually served time for unspecified drug posession. Next year however, it might be worth trying.
