I assume you need to know japanese to successfully attend one of these? I might have money by autumn or by next May, but going to another country alone is pretty intimidating

Plenty of people go to foreign countries without speaking the language. Just smile and point at things and pay.
If you look foreign, they won't even assume you know Japanese, which makes things even easier.
