So what do you guys use to store your doll clothes? They're really starting to pile up for me. I was thinking a file cabinet might work since they store flat, just have one drawer for 1/12, 1/6, and 1/3 so I can flip through that way when picking outfits. I can probably get a cheap surplus one and try that out, but I'm open to suggestions.
>>
>>51047285
I have them in a dresser like regular clothes, but that's only because I already had the dresser and it's heavy, so removing it would be more of a pain. A file cabinet or storage drawer would be a great solution.
>>
>>51047717
Actually, I do have a dresser I could clean out and repurpose. Maybe just get some small organizer trays instead, would be even cheaper than what I was going to do since I've already got the furniture. Thanks for the idea, anon!

After procrastinating with it for a very long time, it's finally time for me to start getting the job done. When I stepped into the Volks store in Radio Kaikan for the first time, back in 2017 as a poorfag freshman student, I promised myself that one day I will make my own special doll. 9 years later I finally got financially confident enough to do my first baby steps.

I got the base frame and few parts for starters (DD-f^3 and two heads, DDH-07 and DDH-29 from notable ones), as well as a basic outfit. That's the easy part out. Now the hard one.

I want my doll to resemble pic related. This will pose three separate challenges:
1. Dye the the entire frame in the blackest matte material possible and make it not peel off. Since vantablack is patented and carbon-nanotube based materials require vapor-deposition method, the best thing I found is paint called Black 4.0 - the challenge is on how to infuse the parts with it. I saw 'anon's dyeing tips' in the QnA docs, but I have further questions regarding it. If anyone has experience with dyeing the entire frame, I'd like to talk. My main questions would be what equipment is needed and the dye bath environment to not destroy the parts themselves.
2. Remove nose and mouth and make the surface of face smooth. I got the part that I'd need to sand those off, but I'm puzzled on how to even and smoothen the surface afterwards.
3. Prepare custom eyes. I've gotten few pairs of 22mm eyes to fiddle with, but I'd welcome any tips from veterans.

I'm hoping to finish it within next two months to fully become a part of the community. I'll appreciate any tips and advice for a newcomer.
>>
>>51066804
diving off the deep end, huh?
surface paints won't work well for dolls, soft parts are flexible enough shed paint, and hard parts will flake at joints
typical vinyl doll dye methods use water-soluble fabric dyes, dye PVC and ABS parts differently, and either way don't give very deep colors
I've been planning on experimenting with a different technique, methyl ethyl ketone + oil-soluble dyes (basically the purple stuff they use on PVC pipe, but custom colors) — that should result in the color taking more quickly
I just haven't found any sacrificial body parts to test with yet (not that I've been looking hard)
any dye technique you use will fade with time, as the dye component diffuses into the bulk material from the direct surface, so you need to do multiple coats separated by time (e.g. 1 week, 1 month, needs testing)
I don't know what oil-soluble dyes are readily available, but you'd need to make sure the black you use is actually black and not very deep purple, because it will be a shade or two lighter once impregnated into the parts
on top of that, you'll still have the original surface finish on the doll, which is far from as diffuse as vantablack or velvet — you'll only be able to cut surface specular by changing the finish somehow, and the result will always be delicate because it's "fuzzy"
I haven't given that much thought to that part because my goal is just more skin tone variety
>>
>>51066965
forgot to mention but you'd also need to wait between MEK dye coats to allow the MEK to evaporate out of the parts
it works by softening up the plastic and allowing the dye to seep in
basically the same as stain cream mechanically, just with an inverted dye concentration so it goes in not out

>the best thing I found is paint called Black 4.0 - the challenge is on how to infuse the parts with it.
I hate to break it to you, but you can't. Black 4.0 is a pigment based paint, not a dye, so it won't infuse into anything(to say nothing of the acrylic binders and matte agents, which will not help - it's definitely not a standard acrylic paint), and even if it does, you won't be getting the full effect. Your best bet is probably casting a resin doll using the black 1.0 pigment they sell, or finding a black dye that will be suitable for your purposes.
To get an idea of what black resin looks like, here's a black doll from Resinsoul - it's probably not as black or as matte as it could be.
>>
>>51066804
>>51066982
2nding this. your dyeing plan is fundamentally flawed. paint =/= dye, one is surface level and the other is chemical absorption. you can't just randomly infuse stuff. actually permanently dyeing existing parts usually requires consistent heat to force chemically compatible particles into the target material, which is not what your paint sounds like. to actually get what you want would probably require casting the parts at the source with compatible pigment mixed into the casting material, or in other words what the other guy is suggesting

To follow up on this; you should grab one of those blind box BJD dolls, they're like $30, and use it as the testbed for whatever you decide to do, then apply it to the expensive doll. You don't want to dive in and fuck up on a doll you spent hundreds on.

I'm glad that I asked beforehand. If I were to go via the water soluble dye route using that Black 1.0 pigment, what kind of temperature would you recommend for the infusion process?
Also, if I understood you correctly, do I need to sand or scrape the outer layer of PVC parts in order to allow dye to seep in? If that's the case, which grade of sandpaper or tool would you recommend for such task?

>>51066982
That's an interesting find. While I'm not particularly fond of the way resin dolls look or feel (too hard and I prefer anime nose style of vinyl dolls), getting to a color like this would be a good starting point for version 1 of my project.
Come to think of it, I think I remember there was one company selling a line of DD compatible dolls with funky skin colors - do you recall if there are any which can cast a specific color on demand?

>>51067233
I asked the other anon before, but what kind of temperature you think is sufficient to allow infusion, but not high enough to break apart the vinyl base?

>>51068041
Good idea, you if those ship to NA? Got any links on hand? My next trip to japan is planned for december, and ideally I'd like to finish the project by the end of august.

>blind box dolls
In the US, Jane's Doll Land is usually a good place to get them.
https://www.janesdolland.com/blind-box-doll

>Black 4.0 Pigment
Is not gonna bind to the doll, you want a dye made for synthetic materials. i-Dye Poly or RIT Dyemore are your best bet there. Use a (non-copper) pot and wooden/plastic spoon you don't care about to stir the bath, follow the instructions on the bottle.

>temperatures
Vinyl, resin, and ABS plastic can all handle a decent amount of time at high temps, the key is to keep stirring so nothing rests on the bottom and starts soaking up more heat. You want more water than less -- less won't concentrate the dye, it will just make things splotchy. I recommend entirely disassembling the frame (take out the screws, take photos as you do this so you can refer to them for reassembly later) and dyeing it last for several reasons: firstly because heat makes metal expand, and the screws can cause cracks in the frame when that happens. Secondly, because the frame is more fragile in general when it comes to heat than the vinyl shell, so you want to heat it for the least amount of time necessary to achieve your desired result.

>keeping the dye on the doll
Ultimately dyeing is a surface treatment, but it's more resilient than paint. One thing to note is that you should dye for a darker result than you actually hope to achieve, because in the coming weeks the color will lighten. Getting a perfect match between the vinyl shell and the frame is essentially between the dye bath and the lord, so don't worry about perfection and just hope for the best! Particularly for the frame, because plastic either dyes faster, or not at all (there is no in-between on this, it either eats dye or won't soak it up whatsoever, and it's down to the individual plastic -- you won't know until you try, Buying some sacrificial parts for testing is always a good idea.)

>company that casts weird colors on demand
That would be ResinSoul. Their dolls don't pose the best (especially without modification -- you will be fucking with string tension, putting silicone kips in the joints, etc,) but for hybrid dolls and making weird shit they are a modder's best friend and as long as you can pay, they will try damn near anything. Modding a resin doll body to take a DD head is a little work, but it's absolutely doable through a variety of soft (removable) or hard (permanent) mods you can investigate on your own time.
https://www.resinsoul.com/08-about/p-001.asp?id=11

>sanding the face smooth
Out of my wheelhouse, but I'm sure someone here can advise. Buy a fucking respirator.

>other options
Some people use an airbrush for this, especially matching the joints to a dyed shell. Find something meant to bond to ABS plastic, and something else meant for vinyl. It's not perfect -- you will be touching that shit up periodically- but it's an option.

I will add, the more heat the faster the reaction, as well. The vinyl joints need more time but i think the heat warps them a tad, some of my dyed joints are a smidge looser compared to my not dyed ones. I keep water to wash off any loose dye and cool the parts back down.
You'll notice eventually the parts wont change color and get darker, thats when you need to add more dye. Less is more, like the one anon said it will get streaky and wont be a uniform color it will have little marks. It lightens like crazy. To get that pitch black you'll definitely need to do multiple dyes and even then it will probably still lighten some and be reflective. I havent done any redyes to see how much it lightens after.
This is a couple months after I dyed her, the joints do not really lighten at all compared to the vinyl. If I was trying to color match everything again I would make the joints a lighter shade compared to the vinyl. If you're doing black i dont know if that matters to you.

>If I were to go via the water soluble dye route using that Black 1.0 pigment, what kind of temperature would you recommend for the infusion process?
It wouldn't work. My dude, pigments and dyes are not interchangable and a pigment will not function as a dye the way it will as a pigment. You can't infuse a pigment the way you can a dye.

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined (still kind of cool but not as cool as a mini easy-bake oven.)

>>51069617
NTA but if you get time I'd love to see what color that midnight navy is now, it's stunning.

>still kind of cool but not as cool as a mini easy-bake oven
We don't have the technology.
>>
>>51069644
Not as an incandescent bulb but there has to be a way. Could just run a little circuit to heat internal plates to toasty temps and a powerful spring to pop little breads back out, but I don't think that would be child-safe lmao.

Disassembly is the first thing that came to mind, but the joints appear to be designed to never come off. It makes sense, it's meant to take rough handling from kids.

Cirno and the blond elf are so cute. Any chance you can take some of them to the beach or the pool?

Sundresses are the best invention ever. Is that a local beach or did you take your doll on vacation?
>>

>>51074144
Nonsense. I've been molesting my daughters for years and they're happier than ever.

She is a tough girl, she wouldnt do that.
She will just have a life long father complex.

How long is dollyteria taking to send shipping invoices these days? Trying to get a new girl over the US before the July 8th customspocalypse.

>>51079654
I'll try to add some doll news from Japan. Elevens are seething that someone won a recent Volks one-off and immediately listed it for auction with a starting price at triple the retail cost. Their description said they're leaving the hobby. So why apply for a one-off in person and bother paying if the goal wasnt purely profit? They're mass reporting the listing to Y!JA and Tenshi no Sato to get the seller banned from Volks for life.
>>
Goddamn if you're going to goon at least make sure the photo is actually in focus.

>>51079654
The short auto-sage time will at least sweep this under the rug faster and we don't have to see this for the next month or two.

Cute doll playing with dolls!
A few of the pics looks a bit blurry. It could be due to hand motion shake or iso settings if you were not using a tripod. Its not a big deal since those looked like quick snap pictures instead of a nice dedicated serious photo shoot.

It ok to have standards.
It's ok to ignore them as well.
Who do you think you are?

Sometimes I think about getting a sacrificial doll part to leave on my dashboard in the sun just to see how the sun affects it over time. We all know yellowing can occur over time, it's the consequence of living in an oxidizing atmosphere. But I wonder how far it would go if someone deliberately left some doll parts in a worst-case scenario? I haven't done it yet, but one day I think I will.
>>
>>51086174
Thank you for your service anon. If you do this experiment would you consider both a semi-white volks vinyl piece and a volks pureskin white piece? Im curious how good volks' UV resistant resin is. My oldest NIB-purchased volks girl is only 4 years old and she looks pristine but I keep her in a glass case and the window has the shade down all the time during the 4 months a year when the sun actually gets above the tree line.

Blythe is for women and has been around longer than you've been in the hobby.
>>
what
>>
>>51089838
Love 'em or hate 'em, people with smaller 1/6-scale dolls owe the Blythe people a debt. The popularity of those things (and the propensity of their owners to swap their giant heads onto Azone/Obitsu bodies for better poseability) means there's an ocean of clothing options for that scale. You'll find better luck in the west finding DD-scale stuff if you search for Smart Doll specific stores... they're a very dedicated community in their own right and most of the clothes fit between DD and SmD. MDD is usually the most popular size, so if it's being drowned out by Blythe that's news... are you hunting on Etsy? Etsy's nearly a lost cause at this point, unfortunately. You can't find shit, especially since they killed search operators. I wish to god there was an alternative which has the discoverability Etsy used to possess.
>>
>>51089838
Newfag, Blythe was larger than Barbie internationally at one point. And then the company fucked themselves over so badly it should be studied.
>>
>>51090853
NTA, I didn't know it was that big. What did the company do to shit the bed that hard? Not necessarily on-topic for this thread, but we're in autosage anyway and you've piqued my curiosity.
