What happened to the wiki for /k/? I remember there buying guides on which guns or knives to buy based on your budget and use case.Is there a backup of it anywhere?

>>63997505It probably doesn't exist anymore and the lazy fucking mods under Hiroshimoot will let /pol/posting and foreign bots overrun this board because they're lazy fucking niggers.
>>64000068People make guides for the generals now. One anon documents body armor better than anywhere else for /gq/, one furry has managed to singlehandedly wrangle /arg/ in a way that isn't a nightmare, etc.The mistake of thinking community projects are doomed stems a lot from misunderstandings about how many people contribute. The "participation inequality" pyramid is all about the top 10% of users and their response to ideas pushed by the top 1-2%. Everything else falls in line. The biggest issue today isn't even spam, it's malaise/demoralization and misconceptions about when, how, and why things suck. There is enough latent potential to make the board good at any time. The autism dissipates because threads expire and people forget about them. But this isn't difficult to work around.
>>64001203This board sucks because there isn't enough quality control on the moderation side to keep out non American trolls who show up just to shit things up. The only way for this board to go back to the 2012 days is to ban non American IPs.
>>64001225They use a spamming service that provides them with normal IPs from a residential VPN botnet. There are only a couple of spammers doing all of it. Threads actually started getting better and stayed up longer after the porn spam, I think because more people finally realized that it's just one guy and it doesn't matter at all. If you defend your threads from being slid (mostly doesn't even happen because dying threads are held in limbo for a bit), nothing changes about the catalog. The spam is gone within minutes to an hour.I'm not doing apologetics for the system - it's wildly inept. But there's a zen in accepting the jank shitassery of the site. Refreshing every minute for New Content™ is the core cause of the spam and troll threads having any influence on a person's mood.
>>64000040do it
>>63997585>>63997814>>63997825It's working for me now. Would be nice if this thread lives a little while longer as a chat on re-wikifying.
>>64000068We lost a lot of the random autists that made the interesting posts at random and the 3rd world got cellphone internet. We lost the weird boomers that were too much for regular forums and gained trolls and brown people.
Note that most wikidumps, including ours here, are just flat XML files that concatenate all the pages in MediaWiki format. The mediawiki syntax is like markdown but a bit messier (more sophisticated) – the syntax used on wikipedia. That is, they are (1) small files and (2) easy to work with. So there's no reason not to grab yourself a spare copy. For anyone considering either setting up the new wiki or helping out:I can tell you with confidence from experience that the main ease of access considerations for a new wiki are exactly these things:1. no login requirement and easy accounts2. drafting in both markdown and wikitext3. WYSIWYG / easy previewingFancy features take a backseat to those things. New wikis succeed when they are only marginally more effort to use than simpler tools like rentry.org and hackmd.io
For actual content suggestions, I could ramble on forever. The gist is this:1. Start with core themes – /k/lit, media, fun guns, important topics from the generals. These are the main focus of the board and it's very easy to write stuff for them.2. ONE meta/guide page for everything like: page editing, using the archives, image and webm editing, etc.3. ONE list-of-lists page as an entrypoint for nearly everything. This page includes things like the names of every general.4. ONE media host for all images, videos, and documents. This makes it vastly more feasible to perform full HQ backups of the wiki.5. ONE "big" page for most topics. That is, immediately set up the convention of dedicated portal (hub) pages for autists with personal interests to sprawl as much as they want. That last point means giving topics like modern conflicts, niche interests, and curation of a whole category of weapon their own main page, to provide focus for the people interested in those things. This is *in contrast to* worrying about Categories. So instead of setting up a million Categories for SMGs or Revolvers or North Korea >>63997840 on a new wiki that only has 15 pages so far and 5 of them are individual guns, you create an SMG page and a Revolver page and a North Korea page. Let them sprawl, in one place, until they can't anymore.Do this preemptively for the topics we have single-issue autists for. Stub the page for them by importing highlights of their posts from the archives. Simple as. This method is how you maximize effort from contentposters and minimize grief for them. Premature optimization is the root of all evil. Keep it simple.
>>64004814>We lost a lot of the random autists that made the interesting posts at randomThey still show up, it just takes more diligent reading to notice them now.>the 3rd world got cellphone internet.A travesty, but one that isn't being reversed if we just wait it out. People who are still posting here, despite it all are... still posting here. That's the bottom line for any rational plan.
>>64004882And I can tell you with confidence from experience that the main anti-spam considerations for a new wiki are exactly these things:1. login requirement and restricted accounts2. active admins to deal with spam that gets through3. weirdass wiki software nobody uses (mediawiki gets targeted immediately)It's a bit of a dilemma.Things would be so much better if malicious actors like russia and jeets were cut off the internet.
>>64004973I don't mean to trivialize the spam problem. But spam is an eternal, adaptive problem. In current year, walled gardens die both by pacifism and by decay into obscurity much more easily than unwalled gardens die by frontal assaults. The biggest thing /k/ has going for it, as a group, is its bellicose reactionary attitude toward streetshitting interlopers. You can still count on /k/ to help fight back against hostile actors. This is pretty unique outside of scenes like hackers -- you can't usually count on the same propensity for defensive violence.>software stackYeah there's some security thru obscurity there. Anything that supports standard wikidumps or even git export/sync is compatible enough to make work.
>>64001203/gq/ infograph anon here, glad the armor infographics are of use to you. I agree with your overall assessment of the situation. >>64009349>/prg/I was talking with 1-2 guys in /gq/ about something similar, albeit with a moderate focus on piercing armor. Consensus was that M2AP reloaded into a .300wby or similar at 3,500ft/s would pierce the vast majority of Level IV on the market, XSAPIs rev. A-C and Adept Colossus included. Buffman's tests support this. M2AP projos can be readily acquired and aren't "hot" like M993 and up are. You'd have about a 150ft/s "window" before dropping into v50 range. Only exceptions are the Protech 2230, which is rated for M2AP @ 3,500ft/s and allegedly XSAPI REV. D.I can assist with that angle and also thermals / NV integration into long range setups.

>>64011560Will do if/when the wiki gets off the ground. Until then, the "list of body armor performance standards" page on Wikipedia is an excellent summary. I recall /bag/ rewrote it a very long time ago and it holds up great, although it chickens on giving the actual XSAPI revision A-C rating, which is 3x 7.62x51 M993 @ 3,050ft/s +-50 or 3x 5.56x45 M995 @ 3,350ft/s +-50, ICW soft armor. All other ratings are however accurate, SAPI / ISAPI / ESAPI A-F, G-H, J, VPAM / revised GOST 50774-95 included. It is however missing VTP changes and XSAPI Revision D. Nonetheless, you would be surprised at how well M2AP holds up if driven significantly faster than 2,910ft/s.

Let's talk motivations that matter for a /k/ wiki and library. What are your favorite types of threads?Do you guys take notes? If so, how? And on what breadth of topics?Do you use your own posts as notes? Like: do you make threads, or post guides, as a way to document information for yourself? Why do you *like* documenting things for /k/? Do you prefer to teach your autism? Or do you like learning as you go, with pushback and feedback from others? What are your LEAST favorite posts of your own? That is, which do you dislike having to make, etc?How often do you use the archives? What for?Do you curate media on themes, or archive threads yourself?
>>64021766>fave threadsThis thread asked about interesting threads. In that thread, my main answers are >>63202964 >>63202982. Some replies mentioned my threads but they aren't from me, rest assured.https://desuarchive.org/k/thread/63202875>taking notesI take notes for my work and research. I don't go out of my way to take special notes for /k/ unless the thread itself is a bit of a project. For instance, russian hacks/leaks that require special preparation (sanitization, hosting, translation...) and separation from work.>posts as notesSomewhat. I log every thread I make, retaining originals and edits of media plus the OP text. Sometimes I log particularly involved replies to others' threads.>why do you like postingDistraction from war work and the ability to boost the signal:noise ratio for things I find easy to post about, mostly.>least favorite own posts1) I have grown to dread the large event/show threads. 2) I don't hate threads on new weapons, but I have ended my experiment in making lots of them because this was a counter to spam which no longer exists. The board doesn't need it anymore.>using board archiveI use the archive every day that I'm posting. Lately I've been lurking desu for the purpose of curating good/interesting/fun/notable threads. One of the main things I'd like to do first with a new wiki would be mining the good threads for collective knowledge and board lore that people have sorta forgotten about. Many have become doomers about the board having nothing of value, but it's all just sitting there.>mediaI like exploring real-world /k/ media when I have time. Sometimes I post a gallery thread or two, but nowhere in proportion to what I have in my personal archives. I do not currently think much about *commercial* media -- films, animu, anything like that.
>>64021687The butthurt contained in that image......Weird thing is this isn't a thread even remotely connected to Russia, if anything a wiki would give them more places to spew their shit over.
>>64021779From the /gq/ side, turnover is super high so we lose heavy hitters. A wiki can preserve knowledge across classes of anons, especially on technical topics like thermals, armor, terminal ballistics, first aid. This isn't exclusive to /k/, you go on any forum and you will see the new breed are mostly not of the same caliber as the old guard.

>>64033489Anon mentioned looking into XWiki this weekend. As for me: my only constraints are time and a strong desire not to be the current wiki host, IF the wiki is to be self-hosted. I am however willing to consider paying for a hosted wiki, for a reasonable price, if anyone wants to look into options. For starters see:https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Starting_and_Running_a_Wiki_Website/Hosted_Wikishttps://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Hosting_servicesEverything on a computer, especially someone else's computer, has a lifespan. Understand that full wiki export is a prerequisite for considering any host. The plan for downtime doesn't have to be complicated, but it does need to exist.
>>64034597I don't think anyone wants to be the host, per se, since /k/ wikis tend to attract heat for some reason. We need a neutrally hosted solution that won't banhammer the project if a karen complains. Wikia is right out.I would recommend Usenet for long-term backup / archive sharing. Lifespan is measured in decades that way.
>>64034853It slipped my mind that anyone would be concerned about that. It's such a non-issue. Worst case scenario, you just get the hosting suspended and that's it. My own reservations are just about life stability atm.

>>64040321Looks easy, but not sure if they'll tolerate something 4chan related. Do you have any experience with them? The fact that they have to approve your wiki makes me think it's a waste of time. The modern internet is too censorious to trust something like that. They say they don't have ads to ensure their "editorial freedom," but all it would take would be a couple letters to their hosting providers (did you see this HORRIBLE wiki made by users of the 4chan? The supernazi incel terrorist site?) to get them to change their minds.I was looking at wiki.js too, and that seems a bit simpler than xwiki. Is there anyone that's used either of them and wants to weigh in?
>>64045646>but all it would take would be a couple letters to their hosting providersYou sadly raise an excellent point. Any cursory glance at the news will show that /k/, at large, is very closely intertwined (and is indeed a defendant in a related civil lawsuit) with the Buffalo shooting. The shooter was a frequent flier in /arg/, /gq/, and /bag/, although he was also a regular poster on various tactical subreddits like /r/qualitytacticalgear. He was a groomed-by-the-FBI ass though and nobody here or on reddit is at fault for his actions.Nonetheless, we would need a hosting solution that can tolerate a less-than-sparkling clean community. We got baggage.

Right then. What do you want to happen?Basic order of things1. Attempt to import the old wiki's XML?2. Get people signed up3. Get people some roles4. Overhaul 1 or restart from scratch5. Settle on a new outline like >>64004933.6. Loot useful config stuff from 1d6chan and 4chanmu.[1] might not work. Overall, my strong sense is that we need to start hacking and slashing away at old shit, while housing new content in as few new articles as possible. We don't want to lose new stuff while managing old stuff. So basically,Create a single page for the wiki migration shit.Fuck categories for now, use a single long article as if it's the contents of a category.Identify articles we're interested in keeping from the old wiki, so we can look at their content and (1) see what they use for dependencies, like files and templates and (2) fix them and merge them into simpler structures.<Any other ideas you have for rapidly moving past the suck phase of this>>>64054003I switched the default skin to Vector (legacy) because it's less likely to run into problems with decade+ old pages that are already known to have some breakage. You can manage your preferred skin on your meta/global settings.
Imported pages herehttps://weapons.miraheze.org/wiki/Imported_PagesExactly how it appeared in the job log herehttps://weapons.miraheze.org/wiki/Imported_Pages?oldid=2213It looks like they struggled with using "/k/" in the title of pages on the old wiki. For MediaWiki reasons, the simplest and most reliable solution is simply to omit the slashes from the URLs in the future. It's a lot less complicated than the workarounds.
>>64054197The list of imported pages is now sorted and broken out by namespace.Pic unrel: our first vandalism <3
>>64054298I'm pretty sure that was a duplicate page? there is another one called /k/ approved games that was up at the same time with a lower case k

>>63997608Markets depressed right now for quite a few things, if you want a modern striker fired handgun with a double stack magazine you can buy one for under 150 dollars if you look around and are aware. There is an absolute glut of low end shotguns mixed in with some higher end stuff that nobody is buying atm. Milsurp has gone crazy but AR15s are so damn cheap now you can build one out for literally nothing. In all due time things will shift and there will be new value and overpriced crap on the market. Same as it ever was.Older boomers and silents have slowly started to trade or dump their excess guns onto the market in a short few years every single pre-AWB firearm will be on the market and the prices are likely to go down.

Have a bump for a great thread. Good to have the wiki back.
>>64071264Yep. My plan is to hit LAMs / dazzlers next. I think anons will greatly benefit from incorporating the latter.
I'm following this closely, i'm holding off doing anything until it gets fleshed out/filled in a bit more and i can educate myself more about the format. I will wait until it is more established before i do some mind numbing autism like a dozen pages of text solely dealing with village level WPK Guard organizational structures or other such Norktardation.
>>64073193I'll handle armor, LAMs, and some other stuff. I'll join you in the autism quest with specific soft armor fibers, kinds of spectra, kevlar, dyneema, even zylon. I've been going through 25 year old forum posts and got intrigued on the old ways. We got an unlimited autism budget.

I was reading through the old archive to see some period accurate Dragonskin discussion. Good lord people bought that shit hook line and sinker:>It seems to me that Dragonskin is superior in virtually every way save for cost and weight. How much of a weight difference are we talking about here?>Once u add the plates, the total weight is similar between the two numerical wise and this is where dragonskin seems to be more attractive from my point of view since unlike insert plates the dragonskin doesn't seems to be losing integrity after being hit in one location. Whereas insert plates loses their protective attribute after 1 or 2 hit in the same plate. And my favorite.>Dragonskin.Impeccable defense. This system allows for full coverage of the torso(minus shoulders/armpits, naturally from 7.62x39mm rounds. It is flexible and(manufacturer claim) may be worn closer to the skin, allowing a greater degree of free movement than Interceptor.>60% failure rate upon exposure to gasoline in the DOD testing>Impeccable defense
