My grandfather has passed suddenly and I'm barely keeping myself from punching anything until my hands break. I put this 1893 turk mauser .45 acp conversion together today.Post your projects please, I need to focus on something or I'm going to crash out, 3 stents with a 90% blockage shouldn't have been an issue in 2025.
>>64159301
My grandfather died the same week I lost my wallet. I was supposed to fly to see my grandmother, her only male grandchild, and spend time with my sister. I don't give a shit how you feel. You don't know what anger is.
>>64159571im not op, but everybody suffers at some point anon, and i've suffered a great deal more than you ever have or likely ever will due to my illnesses, so we should all look out for eachother
>>64159301Same here. I've made terms with it and got to see him before he died, but it's hard to believe he's gone. Anyway, that better have been a gun that was already fucked by bubba or had a poor bore. Any idea what kind of sights you're gonna put on it?
>>64159301I'm working on a semi auto suomi from a kit and my friend was helping me with it, but he left the receiver in his workshed and it happened to get broken into, and whoever broke into it stole the incomplete receiverits strange though because it was just a metal tube with some threading on the end and some incomplete grind markings, so i have no idea why they grabbed that instead of one of the many expensive power tools laying aroundi'm pretty mad about it though because that tube cost me $210 in all
>>64159301I finished an 80% 1911 today I completely deleted the grip safety and sanded it down to the frame for a higher grip
>>64159862Maybe he fucked it up and just told you it got stolen
>>64159885he'd have to fuck up really badly on a portion that really isnt that hard to do (slots for the rear sight and trigger group, which any mistakes on would just be covered up by other parts)and he said he'd pay for a replacement
>>64160004Your friend likely now has a full auto Suomi receiver.
>>64160026it'd be a massive pita to bore out that tube to make it fit the original bolt
>>64159668It was a bare receiver, with just a trigger. I may be an amateur, but I'm not a hack
we found the receiver, my dumbass forgot i put it in his dremel case
>>64159301People die. All of us. Anger is an initial stage but without profit. Our first bereavement is practice for the next and the next. Trips may be postponed and wallet contents reconstituted (I wear a surfers wallet tethered to my belt with paracord so mine never leaves).Do whatever is wise, chosen coldly.
>>64159872That's neat. Where'd you get the 80 anon?I've got mixed feelings on the grip safety delete, but recognize that I probably shouldn't.Did you buy a jig too, or just use existing milling exp?
>>64159872a 1911 without a grip safety is like an angel without wings desu
how fucking retarded are you people to get angry about an old person dying? that's literally what they're supposed to do. they lived a full life, got married, had kids, had grandkids, retired from their job and enjoyed their twilight years. you are unironically subhuman if any aspect of this situations makes you mad.
>>64159301RIP Grandpa. May his memory be a blessing>>64159571It's not a contest, friend.>>64166713Everyone interprets life differently, and we don't know the relationship they had. Shut the hell up
>>64166803>Everyone interprets life differently, and we don't know the relationship they had. Shut the hell upNo, this is some fagboy shit. This guy's grandpa lived a great life in the best country on earth when it was still a real country and this crybaby is angry about his entirely expected and normal death. In the good old days men would sing songs and celebrate the glory of his life. Fuck OP and fuck you.
>>64166881you are so cool, perhaps the coolest guy posting on 4chan right now
>>64166890My uncle died literally two days ago. Do you know what we did? We went around to his widow's house, got some good food, drank his wine and shared stories and jokes about his life. You genuinely need to kill yourself if you get angry about this sort of thing. Actual third-world behaviour.
>>64166803Thank you anon, it doesn't help any but at least it's some sort of sympathy, I'm angry because it was supposed to be a routine procedure to place some stents, a procedure that pales in the face of what they cracked my grandmother's chest open years ago to preform a triple bypass among other surgeries because she wouldn't stop smoking till the early 2000'smaybe she was built different, but grief has eroded something in me

Finally converting my slant receiver thumbhole stock M77 to a normal stock. I'm making the stock myself out of some scrap, and probably going to repair the receiver with some scrap steel too. I have a piece of sheet steel that's like .050", whereas the receiver is like .057" (nominally .060" I think). I think I can make it work if I can't find something thicker.

>>64201451I finally bought a mill in May. Before that I had access to my dad’s lathe which is just a Precision Matthews 1640 with a different name and colour scheme. Pic from when I bought an SKS from that Chinese made/Albanian used batch. Filthy. And someone broke the safety spring, of course. I think I was only able to get it out because it was snapped. Still trying to work up the courage to try and throw the new spring in. I think you might need to punch out a pin or two to do that, though, which is fun on a gun that hasn't been apart since it was made in 1960/1970-something. I believe the trigger group is matching to the rifle, too, so I have to be careful. Not to mention the retarded prices SKS trigger groups were fetching last I checked should I really fuck up.
Well even if I'm not getting any better at welding, I'm getting pretty good with a Dremel.

It sucks.>I'm not doing well but I'm still moving, I'm disgusted by the ways my so called family are handling the estate as well.I won't get into specifics but I just witnessed that same god damn thing. Person dies; they loved (thing) and won't get rid of it even though they haven't used it in 15-20 years. Reminded them of better times. Family all says they love (thing) and it reminds them of (insert parent(s)). Yet the time comes when they're both gone, I begin to wonder if it's poor taste to ask what they're doing with (thing) because it would actually be useful to me, and being very close by, would be very easy for me to pay them a couple of bucks for it (or god forbid give me it for all the help). Then the family who said they loved (thing) comes and starts cleaning out the house and wouldn't you know it, they hired someone to take (thing) away for a couple hundred bucks because it was "beyond saving" (repair cost ~$5-7k?) despite them all making north of $100k/yr as I heard it from their parents, despite them saying they'd have loved to get it up to their house as a reminder of their parents, all without asking me if I might know a thing or two about it or want to take a crack at making it work (as I desperately need something like that, especially for cheap). And they did that instead of saving it despite some of them inheriting large estates/sums from other family rather recently as I understand it. Being vague for whatever reason even though I know they don't read any part of this site but fuck does it piss me off.

Have a feeling that it could easily be solved only having one wipe at the end and both slitting and punching a hole big enough to avoid the edges of the HP though. Less effective than a normal wipe, sure, but a slit and cut ~.10 or .15 rubber capped hole is more effective at holding back gas than a ~.25 cal metal/plastic hole, if just a little.

>>64226142Dude, same. Would be great for PCCs for home defense. >>64226599Best bet would be to clamp it in a vise and use a drill press. Next best would be to make a jig and drill using that.
>>64229843That and I think it'd be cool for 22LR handguns at the very least. Or maybe carry 9mm; keep the dust and dirt out without having to tape over the endcap.
>>64226599Drill halfway from one side, then halfway from the other? Should meet roughly nicely at the middle. Not sure how you'd do this for a hole that needs to have a stock screw hole at the right angle (therefore two different size holes at certain length), though. Might be jig (or slow and careful) time.
>>64229843>>64232160Good idea with the jig; I was considering something like that, so I'll take it as confirmation. I'll probably have to come up with a way to drill at the correct angle from each end and have it meet in the middle, because otherwise I don't know how I'm going to drill a hole that deep. In the meantime I got the pistol grip roughed out.
And I forgot the image, nothing impressive anyway, but fun enough. I also decided I made the length of pull on the stock way too long. I'm not a big guy (for you), so maybe I'll cut it down a bit.

>>642325323d printing is your friend here.Step 1: Roughly measure the stock and the angle you need to drill at. Step 2: Make a jig in some 3d modeling software with the following caveats: Make a hole in the jig where you're drilling into, and over-size the hole to accommodate some sort of metal piping to place in the jig to guide the drill bit. Trust me, any wood drillbit will chew the fuck out of plastic and might fuck up the angle. Step 3: Clamp the stock in a vise, and drill it SLOWLY, taking your time and being extra careful. The barrel may also be a concern. The bore is very obviously worn but I'm not sure how much of a problem that is, I'm not an expert by any means. I can share a pic later if the thread is still up
>>64246816I should really pick up a cheap borescope, holy shit. Best photo I could manage, those dark spots are worst of it.

>>64247609Buy one of those el-cheapo chinese ones with the control box that has a brightness adjustment wheel. This isn't the same exact one I have but it's pretty good. Only problem is most of them are set to focus at one inch, which is fucking MILES inside of pretty much anything. Get one of the ones that give you the hook, mirror, and other screw-on attachments for around $20 on Amazon. The apps recommended by these cheap borescopes are terrible but I'm sure you could use opencamera or something. Or use the terrible app and just screen record/screenshot as needed.

>>64248813I mean more because it's something that people already experimented with back in the day. .22 Spitfire / .22 MMJ / 5.7mm Johnson was .30 Carbine necked down to a 40gr .224 caliber projectile, as a lower cost way of making an SCHV rifle, you could just convert existing M1 and M2 Carbines with a new barrel and I think an added bullet guide.Actually worked out pretty well, too, but it simply wasn't as good as the AR15, so it never went all that far, and on the civilian market end, people greatly preferred the cheap .30 Carbine surplus ammo.An M1 or M2 converted for the 5.7x28mm pistol cartridge though is interesting in itself, it might even work in the same magazines (though they might also require a spacer block or something). I like the idea of one like as a handy varmint rifle.

The screw under the stock at the rear sight wings is FUCKED; ironically the one holding the wings in under the barrel is immaculate. Someone did something to the nosecap (side) screw to fuck the threads impressively, like they struck it with something hardened. Need an upper handguard, maybe both sections; might whip up a repair. Buttplate screws need to be hit with a cutoff wheel to restore the slot and make them functional enough to remove and properly cut the slot (easy). Needs a bolt (duh). Stock needs repair so it doesn't rotate in the receiver. Reinforcement block in the rear of the lower part of the forestock (whatever you call that) needs to be epoxied back in. Needs a lot of cleaning. And probably throw in a rebore to .410 shotshell for fun (and so I can shoot it). Also, after scrubbing on the stock with Dawn and hot water for a couple hours like you would on any filthy-ass beat-up Indian surplus SMLE, I nearly shat a brick when I saw it was a fucking LONDON SMALL ARMS.

His videos are why I even consider the possibility of being able to repair an upper handguard (and hide the repair under a barrel band). Whether or not I'll be able to find matching wood and match the finish, though? That's another story entirely lol. The small parts and maybe the receiver will get tossed in a pot of boiling water to convert the rust. Shame the follower will lose its cool green paint, however. Hoping this one will convert pretty good and I won't have to repeat the rust/convert process too many times. It appears fresh and blue (and I mean BLUE) when I was cleaning off the manufacturer's mark so it might be mostly just dirty with light rust on most of the important parts. BTW, it has a matching LSA stock, too! If that's not a fire under my ass not to fuck up restoring the stock I don't know what is.
Nosecap is proving to be strange. Doesn't match most of what I've seen. Seems to be a different cut (top) as well. 5 digit serial number on it with a letter below rather than above on the end of the cap.
>>64264088The SKS doesn't have very long length of pull, but goddam must you be a real tall motherfucker if you felt you needed all that extra length, like straight up Lanky Kong arms.I'm not gonna gripe too much about an SKS, millions of those, and the replacement sight and stock modification suggests it's your working rifle, so if it handles better for you in a practical sense, I guess that's the important part.If those peep sights maintain zero, their longer radius and superior aperture should really make them much more practical and an improvement in handling.Aesthetically though, I don't think it looks very good, and if you're willing to do woodworking proper, consider making just a completely new stock for it some day. You could even give it a grip profile you'd like better.>>64264665Fair.

Might be worth making the barrel the suppressor rather than making double the tax stamp.
>>64264504crusty
>>64272260Fucking filthy. The rust and dirt was allowed to build up so badly that the rust bleached the wood in one area (I think) and it appears to have eaten a rather large divot in another. Covering it in acetone soaked paper towels and rubbing is the only thing I can do to pull the black dirt and oil out of the stock and it's slow as fuck. Being that it is the absolute bottom of the bottom of the barrel (these were imported over 25 years ago and have sat since!) I'm going to clean it up and make it look presentable and decent (convert rust, remove oil from stock, give the wood a nice mostly correct finish, repair and fill cracks, and fill areas of missing wood) but I absolutely won't feel bad about boring it out to .410 shotshell like I think most of the Indian Musket .410 Enfields have been; might actually be cheaper to shoot than a .303 at this point. Seeing that it was converted to .410 IM single shot in 1931 for Indian use, I doubt this thing has seen much cleaning or care since then. Lower forestock seems to be mismatched as cleaning revealed a ~5 digit number that doesn't match the S/N at all. Upper rear is missing. Upper front is half broken and IIRC there's a non-matching S/N on that. Stock matching to maker but 3 digit number doesn't match the gun. I think I might just give the parts a boil sooner rather than later just to make it look nicer. And I said it before but getting a LSA was absolutely unexpected. I've only ever seen one other in person and it was fucking butchered. Someone half-sporterized it and gave up. Receiver would've been worth it but they tried refinishing it very poorly.PS: Sorry if I accidentally repeated some stuff; I posted in /msg/ as well so I'm trying to balance remembering what I said in which thread.
Bumping for great justice and spamwave survivability!

>>64266500Yeah I'm tall and my arms are actually longer then normal so even with armor I'm shooting my M4 with the stock all the way out and it's still a little scrunched. I've done a good deal of wood working before , primarily furniture built up from scratch, but never anything like this. I probably should have straight up refinished the whole stock instead of trying to color match it. That and not use a random leftover chunk of pine I had laying around and gotten a decent piece of hardwood. if I ever find a bayonet mount for it I'd probably try and redo it properly maybe even make a new stock. It doesn't seem that hard to make. If I can do that successfully I'll probably give it a shot on my M1. Its not quite my primary rifle since I figured out how to build a IL complaint AR (ammo cost so much now) but I still enjoy shooting it and I'll admittedly cry less and likely be in less legal shenanigans if I have to use it. >>64266909I found the M16A2 I shot qual with a tad short in armor so yeah
I'm finally figuring out how to get all that dirt and oil out of the Indian 410 SMLE. This is going to sound insane but it works and it works without using anything like lye (oven cleaner) or anything crazy that will actually damage or bleach the wood as long as Murphy's is close to neutral. My process is:>put wood in black trashbag with plenty of air>tie shut to keep air inside>place in direct sun to bake the FUCK out of it, preferably on a dark surface>take inside>use Murphy's Oil Soap in the "extreme filth" ratio of 1/2 cup to a gallon (eyeball it) with warm/hot water and wipe it on the stock completely covering it>set it in a bathtub about a minute (about the time it takes to clean up any mess you've made)>again take the Murphy's Oil Soap to saturate a PLASTIC scouring pad like pic related from Dollar Tree (IIRC) and scrub the whole length of the stock with the grain (butt to muzzle)>re-apply to scourer or stock if needed while scrubbing>rinse the stock with hot water out of a shower head on jet setting>be sure to completely remove the soap; a clean or rinsed scourer may help herenot sure if it's the Murphy's or what but the water comes out fucking oily and shimmery, as well as filthy from the dirt and oil>take Dawn Powerwash spray (I use clear) and coat the whole stock with suds>let sit one minute again (or clean up the mess again)>use plastic scrubber to scrub the stock again; be sure to wet the scrubber with warm/hot waterthe filth will continue pouring out of the stock; I think each thing I'm using dissolves a different kind of dirt best>once again take the shower on jet and hot and blast the soap off the stock>now towel/paper towel dry the stock until damp but not dripping>take a paper towel, fold it up 3 times, and soak in acetone until dripping>rub the stock as before until it stops working>dry stock>repeat; go back to sun heat if needed or next dayIt's getting closer and closer. Damaged spots are still black; most is nearly bare.
How would you recommend refinishing a stock anons? Just sand it down and then reapply the stain/coating of choice?
>>64280257Highly depends on the gun and stock. Right now I'm doing >>64279597 with >>64264706 for cleaning and I have no need to sand. I could sand but then I'd have to look back into raising the grain and what the proper way to deal with raising and sanding to get a nice finish which is a whole thing I don't want to deal with. Sanding also tends to round details like finger grooves and edges and can look like shit if you fuck it up. I could scrape but ditto. Whatever was originally done when it was made and however it was used left my gun really damn smooth so I'm tempted between BLO, Shellac, and Rustoleum clear coat. Heart says Shellac followed by trying BLO. Shellac will make any curl or wave in the wood shimmer nicely like hand-made furniture would. BLO has never done that in my experience despite claims that it does (and proof that you can). Brain says the stock already has good color (it's English Walnut) and from past experience I know Rustoleum clear (Satin, IIRC) somehow makes woodgrain shimmer like MAD. Least effort, best result if you don't need stain to color the wood. On light woods what you see is what you get and it will be exactly as blinding light tan as it started out as. Obviously don't do that on a rare/collector's gun but it works better than you'd think. Not sure how strong it'd be.Also as for the curl/wave in wood, this is what I mean https://www.chatometry.com/what-is-wood-chatoyance/ and pic is an example. The site has examples that show what happens when you sweep a light across it. Also see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_laRR95IZac and this dude who is obsessed with chatoyancy and shows it off at every point he can. https://www.youtube.com/@Justinthetrees/videos
>>64280257I also just realized you're probably the guy from the /MSG/ thread and I really haven't given any help for refinishing that isn't a clean-off and wipe on job (ie. if you have anything worse than a ding or dent). Here's some pretty good ways to remove old finish. Sandpaper gets clogged quick and sanding finish, ESPECIALLY urethane finishes, makes you go through paper (or constantly have to clean it) like mad. Been there. Scraper is the way to go.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NLQEmwAvo4If you have a spot where the wood has fuzz or splinters, then yeah, sandpaper, like 240 grit. 3M Automotive wetordry (Walmart) is the SHIT and will not leave any "sand" behind like the cheap stuff. Also some good...well, it isn't reading, so I guess watching? Doesn't quite roll off the tongue the same. >>64159571Am I so downbad that the mere mention of Anon having a sister is enough to get me going? The answer is yes
This is why you do maintenance/conservation, kids. I think the stock had a crack and years of rust and oil not only weakened the wood but also spread the crack. The screw was fused to the buttplate and once turned using the buttplate (very carefully), it acted as if there were no threads left in the wood, just like another screw on the gun. Going to have to buy a dowel, bore that hole out, glue the dowel in, predrill, screw in. That's after I not only degrease the stock but also the chip that came off. That chip, I just threw the thing in a jar of acetone. Fully degrease the damn thing. Might have to do the same to the wrist and butt of the stock as well if not the whole thing. Just so thick and so much oil. The wrist of the stock has a small ~1mm by 2" split that I can't understand (yes, I am mixing metric and imperial). It doesn't reach any endgrain, it just starts in the middle of the wrist. So between this chip, the damaged handguard, the random crack, and some other things, I think I'm going to have to get Acraglas for sure. I won't be doing that for probably a month at least, though. I may also have a source of walnut I may be able to somewhat color-match to replace some missing wood, but I'll be working with American Walnut rather than English.
cleaned my rossi snubnose for the first time since i bought it. it was at the point i needed both hands to cock the hammer. polished some of the bearing surfaces while i was in there, it's almost nice now
>>64284351Something feels uncanny about that image. Is that an AI Beretta? If so, it managed to get it very close, but there's an offness to it, and not just for the complete absence of markings.
>>64285211NTA but yes it is, look at the takedown lever and how it doesn't have the hook to catch the nub or the Beretta logo and how it's all blobby and fucked up. Also the corner of the trigger guard is all rounded and retarded.

>>64288376Oof. The contrast between the two screws is really something.
>>64288376I think you need to amputate the left one.
>>64175668>>64181491Feels like a boof post, I love it.
>>64289721>>64290472The crack on the top of the stock (that later became a big woodchip) must've let water in to let that one rust. Top edge of the butt seems to be common damage but it must've happened past the point of any Indian armorer giving a shit; they're usually cleanly chiseled out, patched with new wood, patch finished the same as the stock, and the patch tacked down with small wire nails. Not sure if they're glued; probably depends on the location and size.I'm hoping to re-use the left screw...however I'm not sure how possible that will be. It somehow looks like the threads are even shallower in person. I'll predrill a scrap piece of wood and see how well it holds in that (and if it cuts threads in the wood) before trying it in the gun once that's patched up. The right screw, though, has beautifully cut threads; for being over 100 years old it's in damn good condition, too. The spring for the trapdoor is looking rough as well (look at the one side that's completely eaten through!) but for now it works. And it better keep working because the screw holding it won't budge. Back to the two screws, I need to do a final pass with a cutoff disc to recut the slots due to excessive wear. I did enough to remove the screws but I want to even it out and get it deep enough to reliably use. I usually like my cheap ass $10 Harbor Freight rotary tool for this because it's so small, light, can easily be overpowered (stopped), and has an auto-shutoff that shuts the motor off for about 5 seconds if it detects that the tool gets jammed/tweaked and it pinches the tool. Makes delicate jobs like this a breeze. Unfortunately I have a full size Dremel and can't find the small HF one ATM so it's a lot more awkward. Luckily the speed goes down super low (and torque is decreased at those speeds) so it's at least somewhat controllable (unlike some of the older models that IIRC love to grab and run across parts making huge trails of scratches).
