What's the point of joining the army if there's no war?
>>
Money
>>
>>64188331
Personal growth and whatever training or skill programs you can get through it which will stand you well in civilian life after you leave?

Getting to preface every opinion you have with "As a Veteran..." to add more weight to it over those of others?

Get to drive a tank?
>>
>>64188335
you can earn money if you get a job
>>
>>64188331
I'm considering joining because I want to do all the cool stuff like jumping out of airplanes and blowing stuff up, before that opportunity is gone and I'm left with regrets and what ifs
>>
>>64188331
being forced into a life of resilience and discipline when you are too weak to do it on your own

I wasn't doing shit with my life. so might as well not do shit, while im in the army

after I got out I knew how to wrench and got an okay blue collar career fixing cars and trucks

i see the army as a really funny community college or a trade school where you might have to shoot guns or invade a foreign country sometimes

For the US, there's:

1) It's a job, and you get paid. Not great, but see the rest of the points to see why it's not that bad.
2) Free housing
3) Free healthcare
4) Free food
5) College benefits
6) Maybe learn something useful
7) It's really not all that bad, you get to make some good friends and fuck around. Don't take yourself too seriously and even the sucky shit is fun.

If your healthcare, food, and housing are free, then $2144/mo for a brand-new E1 is pretty fucking good.

Things the military does when not at war:
>disaster relief
>train foreign allies
>train WITH foreign allies
>fuck around near hostile countries waving your dick at them
>watch powerpoints
>fuck around in your own country and go camping
>get injured
>catch weird diseases
>stand around while retards scream at you during unrest/riots
>clean hopelessly decrepit buildings
>>
>>64188331
Taught me how to push myself and built my work ethic when I was enlisted, got my through college and commissioned as an officer and in pilot training. 10/10, glad I did it.
>>
>>64188353
If you can get a job, you wouldn't be enlisting during peacetime.

To start one!

The army also pays for your food and housing. So while you get the same money as from working mcdonalds, you also save up much more. On top of this, you get discounts on higher education after leaving the army.

Seems like the army is a pretty good career move if you're just leaving school and have no idea what to do with yourself.

You forgot
>gaining potentially lucrative skills for when you get out
>general posturing while in service
>allowing you, once you leave, to start every other retarded sentence you say with "Well, as a veteran"
>>
>>64188331
That vested retirement program where you enjoy deferred compensation, medical benefits, and go back to school on Uncle Sugars dime for the fun of it (I took welding and machinist training.)

The objective of earning money is to one day have the choice to work or not.
>>
>>64190617
Hopefully, we can soon have a world where nobody has to work unless they choose to. Like Star Trek. The reward for working in that universe is merit, prestige and the offer of jobs with more responsibility.
>>
>>64189357
>gaining potentially lucrative skills for when you get out
These would be?
>>
>>64190837
SIGINT, pysops, COIN tactics, orienteering, survivalism, firearms and explosives training.
>>
My opinion personally,
The U.S Army is the best organization in the world. "Prompt and sustained ground dominance and warfare across the full spectrum of military operations at all levels of conflict."

You have your folks who will just talk about the financial benefits, don't listen to these under achieving fags.

The mental tolerance it takes to do well in the military is more difficult then developing discipline as a civilian.
>>
>>64188557
Sounds like a marxist utopia
>>
>>64190955
Eh, I liked being ordered around. Reduced the mental overhead for me. What kills is, to me, being shipped to some dump and left there to rot.
Wasn’t US army, but still applies I guess.

Join some cyber/IT/AI unit and serve several years, get useful working skills (and enjoy some gun stuff sideways). Comfy office job, life never at risk. Then leave and get highly paid anywhere else private or gov. Trick.
>>
>>64188331
Depends what you're doing and what else you could be doing. If you're into just bumming around as someone who hasn't got a clue then it won't really matter if you're doing fuck all in a retail job or the army. Course if you're not able to join an actual military then you're probably better off in a retail job, flipping burgers, driving a truck or something else
>>
>>64188557
>$2144/mo for a brand-new E1
>fresh privates earn more than me
That's what's I get for going to grad school
>>
>>64188331

>>

>marxist utopia
No, that just means killing everyone with an IQ above 95, raping the rest, and then dying of starvation or AIDS. I mean, if we're talking about the best case scenario.
>>
i literally get paid to go scuba dive, rock climb, skydive, shoot guns and drive cool shit year round. and I get paid well.

its a fucking no brainer if you know how to play it
>>
>>64188331
to keep your country security afloat.
idealy all countries by now would shift to a defense force with a medium amount of volunteer with extended/specialized training and a large amount of reserve unit with standard training for border control and patrols.

but with the cold war arms race and other shit going on (like the constant resource war nobody is talking about) you want a military with a large volunteer force so you can send them anywhere you want at any time, volunteers depending on the branch will now also get a civilian job so once their contract end they can go back into civilian life with a diploma or a job experience
>>
>>64188331
They also serve who stand and wait
>>
>>64188331
It's generally a jobs program.
>>
>>64188331
So you are ready for war before it happens. You won't have time to git gud when one does kick off. You'll have to waste time dicking around in basic while the vets get to kick ass and clean house. They'll be done by the time you get your shoes tied kid
>>
>>64188377
If that's the case then the military is the perfect cure. You chose to sign the dotted line, not forced to be there.
>>
>>64188331
The benefits including early retirement. Holy shit you kids are stupid.

Does early retirement mean giving a 19 year old that barely passed the asvap a broom and tell him to knock the drones out of the sky? Knock 10 down and you’ll give him a kill streak just like in call of duty?

Sounds like a very early retirement
>>
>>64190999
Czeched bot post.
>>
I joined for housing and job skills to get a fed job after (not burger)
In theory if you join at the wrong time (or righ) you could be an NCO in a combat deprived force that is engaged in conflict. That would suck bigly since you're effectively blind leading the blind. I think that's what we're headed towards. All of our sandbox vets are E7s+ or out
