Why did it fail, was it deserved? Was it all a waste?
>>
>>64191049
Was a pretty good unit in command and conquer, which means I do not know either.
>>
>>64191049
Official reason was that it was underpowered in both engine and weapons. It was deemed cheaper to conventionally gain air superiority, rather than have an expensive stealth chopper do little raids behind enemy lines.

In modern times, drones killed the stealth chopper concept completely.
>>
It was designed in the 80s when the focus was still on the USSR and the cold war getting hot.

Also stealth features are useless on a helicopter that flies low where everyone can see it.
>>
>>64191049
The primary role was obsolete. People often interpret it as being this deep penetration recon chopper, and that was certain something they wanted it to be capable of, but its main job was to spot targets for Apaches, literally a loach for the new millennium. Unfortunately for the Comanche, the Apache in its own right got loaded with so many sensors that it didn't need any help spotting targets to the same degree Vietnam-era cobras did, so it was more effective to just have two Apaches mutually supporting rather than spotter/gunner pairs.
>Was it all a waste?
Apparently not, since Comanche research led to the blackhawk used in the bin laden raid, and efforts to reduce the radar and sound signatures on little birds and chinooks continue to this day. As far as Im concerned, no research is wasteful if it produces something that works, even if you dont end up immediately utilising it.
>>
>>64191099
We also dodged a massive bullet with it anyway. I can't find it, but there is a video someone on here posted that was a breakdown of the Comanche from the 80's. One of those videos that companies used to make to show off their products in detail with electronic music, and all that shit. Anyway, in the video they show how the computer system in it works. Anyway, see those rectangles? Each and every single one of them was a disk drive that controlled a different part/system in the helicopter. I think the guy in the video said that they each had 32 megabytes of storage. And after that I was like, "Wow, it's actually a really good thing we didn't build this fucker."

Same reason why attempts at replacing the M16/M4 failed.
Not enough performance gained for the cost.

wont let me post c4tb0x for some reason

I loved this game so much. But honestly, the Apache was best because you could carry the most ordnance and the most varied ordnance. As long as you had ammo and flew 5ft off the ground you were g2g.
>>
>>64191049
Comanche squaws are uglier than Apache squaws.
>>
>>64191141
That was a recurring issue with software-heavy military stuff in the 1980s. The computers and associated storage were massive. Also, good luck with software upgrades.
>>
>>64191099
>research led to the blackhawk used in the bin laden raid
there are rumors the comanche still flies in support role for that type of stealth missions paired with stealth blackhawks
>>
>>64191797
Not just that, but imagine if literally any of the fuckers failed or got damaged. No redundancy for a god damn thing because there wasn't room. Plus the weight penalty. Plus the upgrade issues like you mentioned. We can see that situation play out with the F-22 in real time. If the Army had gone in on the Comanche, the first time they were faced with a need to do a total overhaul of the software I am willing to bet they'd have just retired the fuckers unless we had purchased a stupid number of them where such a decision would have otherwise been viewed as idiotic.

Yeah, sure

You're describing a modular system which would make replacing stuff and upgrading it easier, not harder. By 2010 you could have a single 2gb drive do everything and the rest would be free space. By 2015 it would be a 100gb. 2020 and we're talking terabytes in the same space.

The F-22 is antiquated because it ISNT modular, you have to pull them apart and build structure specific components to upgrade.
>>
>>64192313
F-22 = Flying Ferrari

Too good for its own good, but fucking beautiful anyway you cut it. That last real fighter jet, but with nobody to fight, but balloons. Almost poetic, really. Not to worry, we drones n' sheiiit now :/

It won't be bombs that destroy the world, it will be boredom.

FTFY
>>
>>64191835
I wouldn't be surprised.

>>64191949
Is there an official number on the modified blackhawks they used?
Why would the existence of an evolution of the commanche be allowed into public knowledge?
>>
>>64191049
stealth helicopters are a fundamentally retarded concept that doesn't work
literally the most important part of making a jet stealthy is shrouding the engine's fan blades because they're incredibly noticable on radar. not only are a heli's rotor blades 10x larger, they can't be hidden or obscured in any way.
>>
>>64191049
It was canceled because of the budget cuts.
Now DJI 3 PRO does better job than Comanche ever hopped to be.
>>
>>64192455
DJI 3 pro wants to have word with you.
>>
Made mostly obsolete by Apache Block II
Made doubly obsolete by the drone datalink in Apache Block III
>>
Because modern american government is retarded
>>
>>64191049
>let's make a stealth helicopter
>wow we actually don't need it, let's put it in storage and get it out whenever we want
and years later the poor commanche is still sitting in a warehouse somewhere in nevada with maybe one airman or two wanking off next to it
>>
>>64192455
Jet turbine blades HAVE TO be made of metal to withstand the stresses of spinning at 70k rpm.
Comanches rotor blade were made of fancy fiberglass and were virtually invisible to radar.
>>
Now tell me why the Bell 360 Invictus is ignored and ultimately doomed to be forgotten.

Is the Anti-Chinese racism on /k/ the result of childhood trauma over gatling tanks?

No, it's the result of chink spammers

>>
decent manpads everywhere make "attack helicopter" role obsolete
>>
>>64191049
Because stealth helicopters are a waste of resources. The giant ass rotor blades are a dead giveaway and can’t be hidden like jet engines blades. Cost also went overboard
>>
>>64191049
>Why did it fail, was it deserved? Was it all a waste?
Because the concept of an attack helicopter has been discovered to have not as much utility on the battlefield as they had hoped. To sum it up: Attack helicopters are good "bullying" units used to kill stuff on the ground when all anti-air threats have been removed from the ground and sky. If they are ever sent into a situation where they are ever shot at by anything, they are in deep shit. They are essentially "missile trucks."
>>
>dear diary, I am sad that this over engineered cold war wuderwaffen failed
>I'm gonna cry about it on /k/, while adding nothing new to the discussion
Good thread.

>>64192757
Imagine having your entire lift surface evaporate instantly in a bird strike.
>>
>>64193825
Commanche wasn't an attack helicopter, though
>>
>>64191049
Wasn't necessary in hajji wars
>>
>>64193825
wasn't this supposed to scout ahead for air threats so the apache can launch missiles from a safe spot
