the law about carrying weapons is pretty lenient here as long as its not unregistered firearms, it only a fine or they just confiscate my shit and let me go, and even then police dont even care if i have this kind of stuff on me or not since they're pretty chill about it (well, most of them)

Welp if you hit someone in the head with those things a few times they will definitely be fucked up, cloth or not. the only way they wouldn't wind up in an ER is if they elected not to go, it may help with not cutting their face but you'll still bust them up pretty bad and likely give them a concussion. Also I do have a pair myself that I've wrapped in cloth but that's because it can hurt to punch something solid with them and the cloth helps cushion my fingers a bit, not out of any concern for whoever I'm punching.

OP, BATTERY doesn't require a weapon. The moment you land a blow on someone, it's battery, armed or not. (Depending on jurisdiction, there may be no legal distinction between assault and battery, anyway.) It's hard to provide proper help when you don't specify which country you're from, but almost everywhere I can think of, brass knuckles are considered a dangerous/deadly weapon on the same level as a knife/gun and this WILL be brought up in court, broken bones/cuts/concussion or not.
Let's take that crackhead example and run with it.

That is battery (again, some jurisdictions make no distinction between this and simple assault). You'd have a much stronger self-defense case if you were to knock his teeth out there, but they will still tokenly ask why you couldn't disengage.

That is aggravated assault, since he's also intending to commit another felony (robbery). Since he threatened you, you can say you had reason to believe he might be armed, even if he wasn't.
