Bought my first rifle a couple weeks ago. Brand new Colt AR15A4 still in box. Shot it for maybe 100 rounds and it was being kinda screwy with the trigger, couldn't even get through a full 30rnd PMAG without a malfuction, I'd pull the trigger and it would click but the round wouldn't fire. Had to eject a couple rounds then it would fire again. Didn't think much of it, I got home and punched the barrel with solvent and lubed it up (I realize now I put on too much lube and wiped as much of it I could off, I am new to rifles so mea culpa). I go back and shoot it again a couple weeks later, now the trigger is being screwy, sometimes letting off 2 or even 3 rounds when pulling the trigger a single time and slowly letting go of it, and other failures I can't quite remember. My friend in the armed forces who knows a little about ARs dissambled it and cleaned it (but not a lot to be fair), put it back together and we tried again. I decided to stop shooting it when my friend was able to pull the trigger on safe. We shot about 30 rounds before I put it back in the case and shot other guns instead. Really disappointed with this purchase, bought from Dahlonega Armory brand new in box. Do I just call Colt customer service or bring it to a gunsmith or what? Anyone else had similiar problems with a brand new AR?
>>64201434>colt AR>in 2025Deserved desu, overpriced garbage. Especially with Primary Arms selling DD uppers for <$800 currently.
>>64201434I could fix it for you in about 5 minutes. The hammer spring is likely upside down
>>64201450I wanted an old school AR, 20" with clamshell. >>64201474Thanks, I'll look up a YT video and maybe see if I can fix it myself? Like I said, I'm totally new to the AR platform and owning guns in general as I only turned 21 in the beginning of the summer. Appreciate the response.
>>64201434>>I realize now I put on too much lube Lol. Nah. In the Army I was spitting oil every shot. Wet around the takedown pins. Still do on every Ar platform in own. They all function flawlessly. If you use them they run hot as fuck. They are dirty nasty bitches. A well oiled AR platform is a well running AR. The added bonus is they clean a lot easier as well.
>>64201450>>64201434>>64201511lying shill?
>>64201513Appreciate it. I suppose it wasn't "too much" lube , probably just paranoid. Do you ever use those things that spray lube like out of a can, almost looks like compressed air?>>64201558Nope. As I said above, 21 year old pretty new to guns. I own a couple now and this is my first AR. Tried calling Colt customer support today but they're down for the holiday.
>>64201585>>nah. I just drip it on and rub it down with a rag. Used a spray bottle on the Bravo in the army. CLP will work just fine. People have a lot of opinions on "too much oil" and they may be right on some firearms. But when it comes to ARs and 1911s i just lube the shit out of them then give them a bit of a wipe down with a rag. Same one I applied with. >>colt customer serviceIts an AR. Watch a YouTube video on the assembly disassembly of the AR lower receiver and go for it.

>>64201558Sorry mr. boomer, colt has been hot garbage the past decade or two.
>>64201666>>64201474this is how it came out of the box, just googled and managed to disasamnble it. is this how it should be?

>>64201839I don't think the python or anaconda has the dog shit hammer spring but I'm too scare to give them another chance at that price point and was looking for something smol. >>64201839The first batch of King Cobra and Python had some problems. They, in theory, have improved their QC, but people just lost trust.
>>64201948Yeah so I heard, it’s why you don’t jump on the first batch of anything these days.>>64201935I used to be a fully “Ruger Best” kinda guy, but this Anaconda changed my mind, the level of finishing and deburring, smoothing etc makes my Ruger MC look a little rough in comparison, it still was half the price at the time. Sorry to hear this anon, I have the exact same gun and it hasn't had an issue in nearly 1000 rounds. From what I hear colts customer service sucks too. Id try messing with the springs like other anons said before dealing with cs but I wouldn't go switching out parts or doing anything that could violate the warranty. I know I've read of people having to send 1911s in to get fixed and not getting them back for months.
The only Colts I have are this guy and an LE6920 from back when they were still top tier ARs around 2012 or so. I saw a Colt SOCOM P&W 14.5 a few years ago at a local store and the feed ramps were so turbofucked I could tell that rifle was never going to feed a single round. The P&W job looked like it was done by a trained monkey in 30 seconds, still had the slag on it and wasn't polished or finished over. They were asking $2k for that sad thing.
>>64202231You can easily try and simulate the unintentional burst fires.Press the trigger and keep it pressed, then push the hammer down until it clicks and then slowly release the trigger
>>64201434>CZoltColtfags are the Kimberfags of the AR world.
You get a warranty with that?Might want to throw an aftermarket trigger in anyway, nice upgrade that doesn't break the bank. But I'd check your warranty before throwing more money at something.

>>64202196Did those retards at Colt mix parts between a civvy FCG and a Class 3 FCG?
>>64202342yeah as I said I assembled and disasmbled and will likely go out tomorrow and shoot it a lot and sincerely hope there isn't a malfunction.>>64202356just did it, if I pulled the trigger and let the hammer drop, then push hammer down till it clicks and slowly release trigger the hammer moves a little upward but doesn't drop. I hope that the slight reset after the trigger release (but not hammer drop) is normal? thanks for the tip.>>64202391I did get a warranty as it is literally a brand new out of box colt. I agree that if the problems continue ill go through colt and not just throw money at the problem.
>>64202439Why not just throw in a Larue trigger and see if that fixes it? They're only like $90 shipped right now and you should upgrade that shitass milspec trigger anyways. Worst that happens is you have a trigger for your next AR.
>>64202144Like other anon said, Colt was bought by CZ so their quality should go up, if anything. Remington, well, they're not under Freedom Group anymore so I figure the same should happen. Not many people on YT (ie. not a random dickhead on a gun site giving a gun 5 stars with the comment "haven't fired it yet, but _______.") seem to have reviewed a Remington since that happened, though, so who knows what their quality is like. Personally I hope they improve compared to their Cerberus days and I have a couple things in mind I hope they bring back.
>>64202592Mrgunsngear showed off a new 870 he bought with his own money not too long ago that had nothing but problems. Malfunctions everywhere. I like Mossberg more these days, but all my 870s are at least older ones made in the 70s/80s/90s. I wouldn't fuck a modern 870 with your dick.
>>64202214>>64202427That style of hammer is normal. "Full auto" cut bolt carriers are also the norm. Semi bolt carriers were a thing. So were the silly Colt semi hammers like pic. It isn't 1980, 1990, or 2000-something anymore and I don't think even Colt is even doing silly things like that anymore. In M16 parts kit builds (semi auto lowers) the entire bolt+bolt carrier and most of the trigger group is used. The hammer would have a little nub on the tip if it were full auto (M16 style, at least). A three position selector will only do safe/semi/semi in any semi lower (no autosear) IIRC. Difference between AR15 and M16 triggers is the open back of the slot (M16) and closed back of the slot (AR15/semi). Not having silly CYA semi only parts probably cuts way down on parts cost and probably increases reliability if anything.
>>64202634That's a shame; I really want Remington to succeed. Hopefully they just need a little while to get back to it after Cerberus did their best to fuck everything up (remember Remlin quality?). If they brought back their Law Enforcement Only folding stocks and some old products/guns they used to make I think they could make good money at the right price and quality. Just takes the right people running it and coming up with and greenlighting products like (hopefully) T/C seems to be doing.

>>64203159Please explain to me why having a barrel that's only fat for like the last 7 inches makes sense
>>64203240You are right that the thinnest point is a pivot for flexing and will be the spot that causes most of the deflection, but the thicker barrel at the end can have positive effects. The mere mass changes barrel harmonics, that must not universally be good, but it can be.Added mass will also increase heat capacity and soak longer before you get to cookoff range. But no, it does not really make sense, but then it is an american gun, so that is par for the course.
>>64203158I have an 870 Police slightly newer than yours. I'm halfway to converting the furniture to wood and waiting for a good time to buy a Carlson's barrel to parkerize so I have a barrel threaded for chokes. And maybe silence, you know, for fun. Always kicking myself for missing out on those ONG 870s but that's life I guess. I just wish Remington would realize just how many people are just like me and would absolutely pay for a new production folding stock rather than pay $250+ for an old stock a reseller bought in a gun parts box lot at an auction for $20. I just hope they don't fuck the plastic type, finish, and checkering/texturing up (every company making repros does this all the damn time).
>>64203266>Added mass will also increase heat capacity and soak longer before you get to cookoff range.Ah yes, extra material as far from the chamber as possible, that should definitely help.
>>64203274Nta anon, but as someone who has shot the Remington police folder, you don’t want it, it looks cool folded and that’s the only thing going for it, absolutely horrific to shoot with any load that’s not minishells.
>>64203266The only points on an AR that matter for heat are, in this order, where the gas tube connects to the ports, where the gas tube bends if it does, and the meat of the barrel that interfaces with the chamber.Rapid fire blowouts on ARs no matter if they're DI or piston are ALWAYS from the smallest parts dealing with the highest points of pressure. Gas siphoning. I have never seen an AR with otherwise good parts have a sustained RoF failure from anything but the gas tubes.
>>64203293That's a shame; maybe on a 20ga 870 it wouldn't be as bad. If nu-Rem did what Ruger did for the AC-556 I think it could go well for them. I'm really considering it more for hunting than anything, so limited shots per day and no time to think about how much this shot or even next is going to suck. I already bought the B-TM, I'm thinking of getting an A-TM'd mini, and I'd grab a police folder if I could. Made a huge difference on my 10/22. An 870 would benefit a lot from taking some length away IMO. Of all the options it seems the Remington has the best cheekweld IIRC as the top is the bottom of a |_| shaped stamping. And it looks the least shitty. Funny thing is I think I've only seriously brought out that shotgun to hunt maybe once lol. Not a huge shotgun guy but damn even I want that folder. I'd say my reasons are 50/50 practical/cool. Maybe 30/70 practical/cool lol.
>>64203334Even with a 20ga it’ll suck, the first shot sucks, the second “Wow was that really that bad”?, and the third affirms that you now have soft tissue damage. I shoot 12ga shotguns all the time, my Auto 5’s buttpad is pretty rock hard, but still. 870 folder is easily the worst. They make breacher stocks in various lengths of pull or you might want to look at youth or bantam length ones if you wanted to reduce it, if it comes with a limbsaver, all the better.
>>64203358Is it as bad as a KSG with buckshot? Someone handed me one who "had a bunch of buckshot they wanted to burn through" at the range once and considering I had only shot a semi auto shotgun before and was currently shooting a 22 it was quite a surprise how much more powerful that recoil was lol. Nowadays it probably wouldn't be as bad having shot a lot more since then but man I think I was wearing a super thin underarmor shirt that day and that was something.
>>64203404KSGs are a little rough stock but it’s mainly down to the shitty recoil pad, and being a light gun with a different center of mass then other shotguns; and yes, it’s leagues worse.
>>64201434>>64201511Ah, yes. The eternal question of how to properly lube the M16/AR15. Do enough research and you're going to see fifty different ways to do it properly, including a few more from manufacturers. They will vary from a couple of drops of oil at key points to literally packing the upper full of grease to the point where people will accuse you of lapping in the BCG. You want to know the secret?>they're all correct>the rifle is that good>a little or a lot, it usually doesn't matterApply a bit of common sense though. If you're in a desert with talcum sand, grease is obviously a no-no and the oil should be light to the point of almost not being observable. If you're in very cold conditions, oil is fine but grease probably isn't. If it's pissing down rain on you, you want grease or lots of oil. In the non-fucked temperate areas of the world where people actually want to live, you can do basically whatever you want. It'll be fine. If it's not operating properly with no lube at all, something is wrong with it. If it's not operating properly when drenched with lube, something is wrong with it.>up here in the pnw where it's raining for 8 months and bone dry for 4, we oil the shit out of everything>or we grease the shit out of everything>or we don't do either and just clean the fucking thing after it comes out of the rain before putting it away>don't overthink it, it's a mature design that was meant for military use and it's remarkably tolerant of retardationI think that you got a lemon OP. Get in touch with Colt and don't accept the "it just needs to be broken in" explanation. It does not need to be broken in. It needed to be built correctly.
>>64203457Sheeeeeiiitt. Maybe a wider buttpad could help a little. And a fat hunting jacket.
>>64203158>>64203293>>64203334What tube extension do I get for my police magnum? I got one of those silly ones with the orange HI VIZ furniture on the way because it had the 18” rifle sight barrel but this one doesn’t have the +2 extension. My other police magnum came with it already so I didn’t have to buy one.
>>64203503Not sure but hang on to that adjustable rear sight slider because that little fucker was like $45-50 (plus shipping) just for the stupid fucking thing last time I checked when it was available. At that price I'll buy a new fucking barrel with more features in higher quality, god damn!

OP here. made it to the woods. after dissamebleing and ressembiling, I just shot 7 mags worth of rounds with no problems. seems that did the trick. no unintentional burst nor not firing with trigger pulls/trigger not resetting, nor firing on safe. when I took it apart the hammer would drop super easily, would barely stay down , and 1/3 the time I pushed it down it would pop right back up, like I said after going out shooting with it ONCE , factory new colt just out of the box. seems we're good now...

Weirdly in the thread I said I got a Schmid but I definitely have the FCD logo on the hammer as I was inspecting it last night; I even remember they use some weird-ass fake business name on their packages so it doesn't look like gun parts. >>64203274I saw some of those ONG’s come on the market and wished I could have got one. My next 879 will be a retro wood build. Depending on what barrel you have, you could just send the whole gun to Wilson Combat for the refresh package ($230 or so) and they re-parkerize the whole thing. I remember when those folders were $300 and now they go for a lot more. Still want one!>>64203503Plenty of people say the WC and a couple other brands are GTG but I had a cheap one and eventually got the OG parkerized OEM. Depending on what year your gun is, there are two different length clamps, I think the cut off is like 2000’s? The newer ones are just a hair wider from the clamp to the screw hole based on the tube position. I would like rifle sights on my next one. All the Rem parts got bought up in the bankruptcy and I’ve found a few hard to find ones on GB seller gunrepaircenter. They also have a website with more listed.
>>64208355I'd send it to WC but the park is pretty good and it really hasn't seen any use other than what IMO hints that it did a whole lot of nothing except roll around in a trunk or maybe sit in a rack no one ever took it out of. Hell, the paint wasn't even starting to wear off the super soft recoil pad which flakes off if I so much as look at it. I guess they didn't need less lethal all that much, lol. Also I don't really like the rifle sights so that's why I'm going to buy a Carlson's barrel (as well as have options other than improved modified). Thought about a red dot but the Millet mount I bought for $1 used is somehow out of spec (will not fit a vintage Weaver brand Weaver mount). Lucked out and found a random unused kit for parkerizing for a whole $5 like 2 years ago at a junk sale. Having at least 2 gun projects that need parkerizing including my future Carlson's barrel, that was a steal. I think it contains enough concentrate to make more than a gallon of solution if not something like 5 IIRC, lol. Ditto the cold blue to darken it to taste/to match. All original parts are going to be kept safely away where they can't get fucked up so it can be put back to as-used any time.
>>64202214It's not.
