More armor? The shield looks like it's blocking the view, but it looks like more padding. Is this what >>64203632 was referring to?
>>
>>64203673
Secutor has smoother armor (no fish drip) so they don't snag on retiarii nets (very gay).

>>
What would be the most viable choice?
>>
Murimilo.

A siege shield gives you the ability to rest behind it, or to slam a physically weaker opponent. If they're a counter to being shield slammed I've never found it in sparring.

If some gladiators have spears, well either you get a spear as well, or a shield.
>>
>>64203673
They're variants, it really depended on the pairings in which they were meant to fight.

Scissor and Secutor were generally set against Retiarii
Murmillo, Hoplomachos and Trax were other typical pairings
There were even more types, like Samnites, Provocators and Gallus', thoough those were more common duriing the Republic IIIRC.
Equites may actualy have fought on horseback.
And one other type whose name I forgot may have been a charioteer

>>64203632
This appears to be true, there were even fight where they set two slow and heavy gladiators against one Retiarius.
Do note that these fights generaly ended without serious injury or death, they had one or more referees in thhe arena.

>>64203602

Secutor seems like the least silly helmet with grabable points, and legionaire style gladius and scutum. But I dont see huge difference between them, the Murmillo and the trax.

They're usually supposed to be balanced or if they're not it was a themed event. These guys were the MMA fighters of today and had investors interested in not losing all their money to meme matches.

No, many matchups were mirrored annd thhe uneven ones were designed to be engaging and entertaining for the audience.
Arena combat was big business entertainmment, with lots of money too be made.

Retiarius. Fuck you haters.
>>

i remember having a book on gladiators as a kid that had a section on how romans perceived certain types of gladiators, specifically what sort of woman youd end up marrying based on your favorite gladiator
if you liked the scisor you'd marry a poisoner or a witch
>>
>>64206471
the level of salt the secutor must have caused during competitive matches to get that

only other gladiator that would get even more hate would be the retiarius due to being OP as fuck against everyone

So was the Retiarius OP just becuse it had a better spear equivalent or because of the net? How do you even use the net in combat?
>>
>>64206280
>What value could men in great physical condition accustomed to dueling with novel arms and armor on both sides have to the military
If you mean "without any rearming" then that depends on the type of gladiator. The heavier armored ones would do fine as standard heavy infantry, they have shields and swords and more armor than the lightest heavy infantry around, and some of them have huge head to toe armor suits. the lighter armed ones would function reasonably as light infantry, skirmishers, that kind of thing.
If you're also not allowed to retrain them for large scale fighting even a little bit you'd kind of have to keep them segregated as their own units of shock infantry or what have you. But they're not idiots, I'm sure any of the large-shield armed gladiators would be able to pick up the large unit tactics of a legion faster than a raw recruit.
>>
>>64204054
but the secutor didn't hard counter it
retiarius just had to stay alive until secutor got gassed by lack of ventilation in his helmet
>>
>>64206756
they'd do about as well as a band of trickshooters against a marine platoon

Gladiator literally means Swordfighter , if your Gladiator does not use a Sword , it is not a Gladiator

MVRMILLO is the best one , the supreme style of Gladiator in aesthetic , iconic nature and overall effectiveness

>>
>>64206280
Terror/shock troops. It's not like every legionary was a trained killer, how many kills do you think the legionaries that Hannibal defeated had prior? Sure, gladiators didn't fight to the death either, but I'd say that they would be more used to it than a fresh recruit only trained in drills.
>>
>>64204922
>Aren't the matchups always the same and extremely unbalanced?
there were known good and bad matchups, and they would throw in both balanced and unbalanced fights to keep things interesting
unbalanced fights were used to facilitate gambling, because if the underdog won then the lucky ones who bet on him stood to make a ton of money

they also didnt let types of gladiators cross train, so nobody would ever really 100% know how to deal with their counters or always know counter-plays to preserve an X factor in fights

RETAIRIUS

>NOOOO, NET IS TOO OP, NERF!!
skill issue
>>
>>64209184
Spear + full size shield is overpowered as fuck and would have dominated the arenas. You’ll notice all the rest aside from Retiarius have fairly short weapons. If a Hoplomachus had a full size shield, he could just keep the adversary at range and slowly poke them to death. It’s still their best play, but more difficult with just a buckler.
>>
>>64209184
Gladiator fights are for spectacle before anything else. Gimping the equipment is the ancient equivalent of banning spinner robots from your Robot Wars bracket because otherwise it's a solved game.
>>
What really is the difference between a Murmillo, Thraex and Secutor? All have big shield and short sword.
>>
>>64203632

Why? Is it because you can see his face? Is that it?

There were female gladiators, they were called Ludi and fought entertaining tits-and-ass fights, typically at festivals but sometimes in the arena. "Gladiatrix" has no evidence as a term until the 1800s.

>>64210610
they had different themes. murmillo had a fish helmet and was paired with the fisherman themed retiarius. secutor meant "pursuer" and was meant to be a heavily armed turtle chasing after a faster opponent. thraex was named after the thracians and was equipped like one of their soldiers. a lot of gladiator classes were based on national stereotypes and over time when they become politically incorrect they would just rename them to something else.

It looks like being the retardius would be fun, they give you the weighted blankets to put on the downies and a fork to make spaghetti
>>
>>64206673
It was also more lightly armored and better visibility & airflow with no helmet, so you could outrun the others and tire them out.
>>
It's arguably the weakest but Retiarius has undeniable swag
