Russia's only source of T-62 parts and upgrades is the DPRK, this has been the reality since 1990 or even earlier.

For 30+ years the DPRK has made more tanks than Russia, this is a objective fact.

The T-55 and T-62 were the only good tank designs that the USSR ever made.

There is a damn good reason that T-55s never die and that the DPRK uses the T-62 as the base for whatever weird tanks they produce. They are good basic designs.

Everything else that the USSR/Russia makes is garbage. The first thing the DPRK did when they got a example of the T-72M was to throw everything besides the 125mm gun into the trash, the autoloader was the first thing to go.

>Лeoнид_Кapцeв
be Leonid Kartsev
chief designer at Uralvagonzavod, basically the Willy Wonka of steel death machines
1950s-60s USSR: everyone flexing nukes, Leonid flexing tank turrets instead
makes the T-54 and T-55, aka the AK-47s of tanks—cheap, everywhere, and guaranteed to show up in any Third World civil war with free AKs and flip-flops
USSR: "Leonid, make tank invincible"
Leonid: "say no more, comrade"
designs T-62 with smoothbore gun
first tank in the world to yeet APFSDS rounds like darts at NATO tin cans
NATO tankers crying in Leopard 1 noises

1960s
US: "We have M60 Patton, very stronk, trust"
Kartsev: "hold my kvass"
T-62 drops in Middle East wars like Soviet Uber Eats
Egyptian and Syrian crews: "can we get training first?"
Soviet advisors: "lol no, good luck"
still manages to scare the crap out of Israel until IDF pulls anime protagonist plot armor

later years
Kartsev keeps pushing weird prototypes—object 140, object 165, object 167, basically the Soviet naming scheme for “hold my beer, comrade” projects
some too spicy for the Politburo, shelved like Stalin’s old friends
but man set the groundwork for T-72, the literal Toyota Corolla of tanks: everywhere, cheap, still running decades later with mismatched panels

Leonid dies 2013
Soviet tankers pour out vodka in his honor
legacy: created more mobile crematoriums for NATO than anyone else in history
meanwhile US designers arguing if cup holders are MIL-SPEC

tl;dr: Leonid Kartsev was the mad lad who made sure when you see grainy desert war footage, there’s a 60% chance the burning wreck is one of his creations, and a 40% chance it just brewed up after being sold at a discount to some guy with a mustache and a coup plan.

The US doesn't manage resources that tight. It would be a bonus in a ton of ways, western federal land full of sorted and reclaimed parts in warehouses would be a great WPA project for welfare niggers.
I mean we have a "government going into business" prohibition I'm not sure is common, but we could send armies of useless faggots with tools into junkyards and landfills everywhere with orders to pull, sort, and bin parts; and the program would profit like hell.

>>
>>64208727
While you are correct that the upgrade package is above and beyond the initial design, what you are looking at is smoke and mirrors for the armor and protection packages. Take a closer look at the cheeks where the smoke launchers are placed, this is just a body kit a few mm thick at best. The "reactive armor" on the front glacis and side skirts is also just a plate, as if it were actual modular ERA, it would have a very telltale vertical line, as well as an opening where this just has a glacis body kit, as the panels would need means to be replaced after taking a hit.
I like the missiles, though. Wire-guided, similar to Bradley.

Ukraine's technique seems to follow the standard practice by competent militaries of:
Existing vehicle is too lightly armored -> Hillbilly armor field expedient solutions -> Best version of these turned in to kits sent to the front line -> Kits being applied during the manufacturing process

Whereas Russia continues its proud tradition of just slapping stuff together and hoping it works

One does not exclude the other. It's a mixture of artisanal "she'll be alright" cobbling something together in a garage, industrial "haha MIC money printer goes brrrr", and typical "hmm, what if I booby trap a doorbell, they can't be that stupid can they?" frontline creativity.

After all, Ukraine is fighting for its very survival. ziggerstan is fighting to keep the kleptocracy going. Slightly different motivation levels.

Everyone does a bit of the 'non-standard' equipment thing as they need to. Course in a wealthy country military the time between roll off the lot $500,000 patrol vehicles and ork battle wagons is longer

The actual footage they took it from was hi def. The DPRK has really good cinematography, creating the industry was one of the ways Il impressed his dad to become successor after finishing the west sea tidal barrier/Nampo dam.

From examining all the footage the turret seems to be a modified Songun turret, the shell over it is to cover the huge amount of wiring for all the sensors and such they stuck all over it. From a few close ups of openings in it the shell is about 20mm thick.
