Why have a door gunner when you can have an helicopter with a fixed cannon connected to the cool thermal sights?
>>64210643mutts cant into tech
>>64210643Fixed guns are fixed and require moving the entire helicopter to adjust your POI, giving you less responsiveness against moving targets>>64210654Thank you John Huang from Xingdong County
>>64210643Cost, simplicity. Is this a serious question?
>>64210643Fixed guns don't turn so you need to turn the entire helicopter to aim the fixed guns. Which becomes a problem because tilting a helicopter makes it move.>Thermal sightsSo give the door gunner a thermal sight.
>>64210643Everyone is missing the main point. There are controllable gun mounts for basically every utility helicopter in service. The door gunner can do other things i.e., be the crew chief, aircrew/rescue swimmer.
In video games, door gunners and their minigun is the most op shit ever. Yet I feel like IRL they aren't that op.
>>64210654Americans built some of the first robotic turrets in the 1940s you insolent chang, one of your old shitboxes still in service somehow probably uses a copy of it.

>>64211725It depends on how good the pilot is and how good the gunner is. If its a solid experienced crew, especially one that works with special forces, you can do devastating hit and runs, but if you hang around too long in contested areas you and your door gunner risk what many pilots in Vietnam experienced: being a challenge target for every guy with a gun not actively shooting horizontally at your guys.
