How has the M777 fared in Ukraine?
fine
M777s can be quickly deployed, do not require a special truck (seriously any piece of shit 10 ton can work) and are significantly cheaper. They can also be dropped via air to blow up desert people 10 miles away. Most of this does not matter in Ukraine and they chew through barrels like crazy. M109 is the way to go.
Better than Soviet 152mm artillery.
ok probably
>>64241241fpbp
>>64241268Thats so neat. They should strap them to drones.
>>64241271The drone does %80 of the work for %2 the cost so no they should not lmao
>>64241225It's kinda surprising that they didn't adapt a tank chassis to make SPGs
>>64241597That exists too, it's called the M109.
>>64241275They definitely do not. Drones are slow to set up (unless a drone unit is already in place), very hard to coordinate due to frequency interference, generally need multiple good quality hits to stop an MBT and are susceptible to portable jammers. You can use fiber optic but not only are they more expensive, they are also even slower to set up than standard drones, much harder to fly and require a lot more practice to use effectively. A drone is better if you have unlimited time to intercept a target (i.e. a disabled but still alive MBT/AFV) or if you don't have anything else. I have seen Ukrainian artillerymen in interviews say that SMArt 155 has an 80-90% kill rate per shot and that the only issue is that they don't have enough of them
>>64241225Not as advertised.
>>6424125410ton? shit, they can be towed by a base model toyota tundra without the tow package.
>>64241225From what I've heard crews like it because you can set it up and break it down very quickly, and tow it with pretty much anything, which matters a lot in a war where a drone will almost certainly be coming your way the second you fire a shot. But while you can get a very decent rate of fire out of it, you have to keep the fire rate low or you'll burn through barrels quickly. Compared to soviet artillery, which weighs a fuckton so you need a fuckoff huge tractor to tow it, has a lower rate of fire but a higher sustained rate of fire, but also cannot be broken down or set up quickly, I think it's doing just fine. From what I've seen Russian crews fire all the rounds they can, and then abandon their guns before it gets blown up by drones, so being able to shoot and scoot seems to be the most valuable aspect in artillery lately.
>>64241225It has done an adequate job.
>>64241225Massive improvement over Soviet guns. But its just a field gun.
>>64241225We should send some M198 howitzers.
>>64241974Nope. FPV drones with the operator verbally radioing the artillery to adjust their aim. Jammers have been overblown and failed in the field in Ukraine. Jammers are only useful for static positions and buildings. Drones can hover far from the target and watch the plume of smoke from falling shells.
>>64247769soooo the drone is just makes artillery more effective then?
>>64247769Jammers have been extremely effective, but neither side has enough of them for reasonable coverage (which is why they're being used to protect important positions and not being sent out to get land mined) and they need to be turned off for allied drones to operate.
>>64242087They only weigh 5 tons, not 10.
>>64248138Russia has enough jammers for their turtles, and you know how they end.
>>64248138So the solution to drones has already been found? Its just a lack of available jammers? Do this emit enough for HARM missiles to seek in on them?
>>64248167Getting immobilized by mines and then a few days later being demolished so they can't be recovered? I doubt most of those have functioning jammers, since turtle tanks get blown up every single time and jammers are irreplaceable archeotech. Anyone have the video of the zigger mechanic pointing out the "jammer" on the assault lada he just finished and it's got a loose power cable he didn't even pretend to plug in to something?
>>64241225im not arty, how are the hydraulics on these things powered? by the tow vehicle or what?
>>64248333does someone have the turtle moving just fine and then going nuclear after 1 hit?
>>64248375>poweredhuh?
>>64248175>So the solution to drones has already been found? Its just a lack of available jammers?Sort of, but also not really, because fiber optic drones exist and also 50 year old EW tech means you're jamming yourself at the same time so you're either communicating by courier or only turning it on when you hear a drone, which leaves you vulnerable to the ones you don't hear.>Do this emit enough for HARM missiles to seek in on them?I don't know much about HARM missiles but I'm guessing not. My understanding is that they're designed to go after radar systems and not man portable radio sets, even the extra spicy ones.
>>64248380Proof that that one had a functional jammer on it?
>>64248393proof that it wasn't functional
>>64248147You can tow 2 of them at once!
>>64248380Which one?
>>64241225It was useless without shells
>>64241254>>64242087A Ukrainian marine brigade used a Ford Super Duty for a prime mover
>>64248375It's handraulically powered
>>64248375That's the recoil system, and it's actually hydropneumatic. It's remarkably similar to the one found on the first ever modern artillery piece 128 years ago (picrel)
>>64241225Not mobile enough.
>>64248872That's the most 'Murrican picture I've seen all day.
>>64241225I don't know how the Ukrainian tards use it. However, M777 is great. Hard to believe it was designed by the limeys. Of course it was not designed by the British Government, because they only make shit. It was actually designed by a private company for possible export.
>>64241597It is a super light weight artillery system. Strapping a tank on it makes it super heavy weight. The US Army and USMC don't have helicopters for that.
>>64252511It was designed by BAE Systems, a US-based subsidiary of the British BAE company. So the limeys are only tangentially related.
>>64252511Do you understand what capitalistic nations and military industries are?
>>64252532No it was designed by a British company that was later bought by BAE. BAE also later bought Armored holdings in the USA, which made the M198 and the M2 Bradley among other things. All of the titanium parts for the M777 are still made in the UK, because that is where those were originally made.
>>64252532BAE systems plc, not BAE Systems inc
>>64252551Do you understand that British engineering is absolute shit. It is also rare for a defense contractor to spend their own money to design anything. Usually weapons start off from Military procurement, so the R&D is paid by the government/ military.
>>64252532The M777 began in 1987 as the Ultralight Field Howitzer (UFH), developed by Vickers' Armaments Division in Barrow-in-Furness, UK.[13] Upon taking over responsibility for the weapon, BAE "Americanized" to a large degree the construction and assembly through its US-based BAE Systems Land and Armaments group. The M777 now uses about 70% US-built parts, including the gun barrel (designated M776), which is manufactured at the Watervliet Arsenal, New York, US.[14][failed verification]
>>64252571OK (and excluding the thing we are currently talking about)What does that have to do with you making a bizarre statement amount their government making military equipment? Are you a child?
>>64252586The British government/ military not being part of the design process is probably the only reason the M777 is a great weapon system.
>>64248872>Ford Super Dutythat makes it sound a lot beefier than it is. that's a 20 year old regular F250. towing capacity is 12500lbs.point is, my rattly-ass run-out old IDI farm truck can tow a M777. gun is mobile and you don't need some king shit super-dura-mega-ultra-cummins-max-stroke truck to move them around. you can just use whatever is in the yard that starts and has a pintle hitch.
>>64252972You're right about that.
>>64248872Fucking based
>>64252126>truck made in mexico towing a british gun. k
they have lost 107 of them and have received between 150 and 200 in total

>>64248872based
>>64261386is damaged lost for artillery? seems like it's either destroyed or it isn't.
