Was "mowing down" masses of enemies with machine guns ever really a thing? It's in movies a lot, but seems like it'd be very difficult to do if the enemy is spaced out and reacts to being shot at at all. Aside from a couple incidents in Ukraine where guys got caught dismounting from vehicles, I don't think I've seen actual confirmed incidents. There was a Hamas ambush of a few IDF guys standing close together, but even that I think only got 2 out of 3 of them from quite close with the element of surprise. Is it just an idea from movies?

>>
My intuition is that mowing guys down in enfilade like the movies is pretty rare, but by no means unheard of. If I had to put money down, I'd think the vast majority of gunners with large body counts got them by unglamorously switching from target to target over prolonged time.

>>64252000
This strikes me as a very zoomer befuddlement. Everything being filmed everywhere and all the time is an incredibly recent phenomenon. Even GWOT era the shit you saw was pretty choice-ly shot and shown. It's only in the last 5-10 years that you can be damn near guaranteed of video of everything so much as a PFC pissing on a grenade.

casualties came primarily from artillery, with machine guns pinning them down and restricting movement to allow the artillery to hit them

machine guns did score multiple kills, but it was piecemeal, 1 or 2 people as they dashed from cover to cover
being able to cut down an entire higgins boat before any of them could leave did happen but it was the exception and not the rule, but its just a grisly event no one is likely to forget

He obviously can't tell a Zulu from a fuzzy wuzzy and is referring to Omdurman where 52000 spear armed shias attacked 8000 British soldiers armed with quick firing horse artillery field guns and maxim guns. Most of them died before they even got within range of a Lee Enfield.

There was an even crazier incident a few years later. In 1903 Britain sent an armed delegation to Tibet and 3000 troops from the Tibetan army who still had matchlock muskets tried to stop them. The British opened fire with the maxim gun and killed most of them. It was such slaughter that the maxim gunners (20 year army lifers with starched mustaches and no love for orientals) ceased fire without orders because of how barbaric the slaughter was.

(WW2) Mitchell Paige held back an entire Japanese regiment with 4 machine guns after thirty-three Marines in his machine gun platoon were killed or wounded while defending a ridge during the Battle of Guadalcanal.

(WW2) John Basilone and the two machine-gun sections under his command held off an attack by a regiment of about 3,000 Japanese soldiers. He was one of only three Marines in that group to survive.

There were many more incidents in other wars like WW1 but those two are the ones I know from memory.

Your mp4 shows you using a Maxim in an unsupported position to engage enemies from about 300m away, with no magnification. I thought this was dumb so I made this to show you a better way. Deploy your bipod on flat ground. Use a magnified optic to see what you're hitting. Use thermals with IR tracers so you can walk your shots in. Engage from 400m away or more.

That's because machine guns have been around for over a century at this point and anyone who's watched a movie or played a videogame knows that you don't charge them head on. Back when they were first used, people had to learn that the hard way.

The French leadership was intentionally trying to get them all killed. France's military was completely infiltrated by this time, and they have never recovered.
>>
>>64254170
It's hard to put into words just how badly the French got their fucking teeth kicked in at the start of WW1. I read somewhere that 70% of all French casualties in the entire war happened within the first 365 days.
To be fair, the Germans took it bad too. A single machine gun covering a bridge chokepoint killed so many Germans during the Battle of Mons that they were eventually able to cross by using the piles of their own dead bodies as cover.
1914 was a particularly not-so-fun time to be an infantryman.

The purpose of machine guns is to THREATEN this, and yes it did happen whenever they tried human wave attacks during the Civil War (gatling guns), WW1, WW2, Korean War, and Vietnam. But the real purpose is suppression, and act as a force multiplier for other infantry forces. A machine gun by itself doesn't win battles, it is part of the infantry squad system.

I got really annoyed by the 2.20 update because it bugged the SACLOS function of the scalpel missiles when assigned to the pilot of a two seater vehicle. So my custom mission loadouts for the Blackfoot, Xian, and Kajyman became useless. I had them loaded with pilot controlled scalpels for sniping purposes.

Even that "ton of footage" just scratches the surface of what happens each day on the ground. I personally know people in AFU who fought since day one, and there were so many fucked up clashes, especially in the early days, that you niggers wouldn't even believe, and pretty much no footage exists from back then because filming wasn't that high up on the priority ladder for everyone, just because of how fast crap was happening.
