How many rounds is .30-06 the parent case to? I've considered getting one for quite a while but never have because theres not a particular rifle i like in the caliber and its just .308 with a tiny bit more(or less) oomph, but if theres something thats easily convertable to other calibers that can be handloaded from the same brass i wouldnt mind that
>>64251704Not all that many, but among them .270 Winchester is a great cartridge.
>>64251704A few prominent ones, and probably eleventy different wildcats lost to history..270 Winchester is the most popular one, but you also have the pretty cool .358 Winchester, underrated IMO, you could get the Browning BLR in that cartridge once upon a time..30-06 Springfield brass and similar can also be converted into other things, for instance you can chop the case down to make .44 Auto Mag casings, and it's actually possible to adapt .30-06 casings into improvised 7.92mm Mauser casings (and even vice versa).
>>64251704There are several, though it depends on whether or not you want to count wildcats. Some are pretty common, like 7mm-06. Some are obscure and require forming your own brass.> but if theres something thats easily convertable to other calibersThat is a TOTALLY different question. Very few .30-06's will be convertible to anything else without gunsmithing. The fact that some modern guns are modular and let you swap calibers is the exception rather than the rule. 99% of .30-06 will not convert into anything else without gunsmithing.IMHO there's zero reason to buy a .30-06 because of the cartridge. It's something you might buy because you like the gun, for nostalgic purposes. If you want a .30 cal the baseline standard is a .308. .30-06 isn't appreciably better, but it does require a long action which greatly reduces the number of rifles chambered in it. If .308 won't work for your purposes because of some technical feature like range or power then .30-06 won't really help. Cartridges like 6.5 creedmore or .300 win mag offer significant, tangible, upgrades to .308. Look at those if .308 is inadequate for your needs.
>>64251783.30-06 has a lot of case capacity though.
>>64251860How much of that case capacity could i realistically use with standard brass in a typical rifle tho?
>>64251860>.30-06 has a lot of case capacity though. Not compared to .300 win mag.
>>64251704Whelen
>>64251878All of it.
