what should I get a Mossberg 590 or a 590A1? Is the A1 just a boomer meme for "military grade" collector value or is it actually worth the beefed up construction?
yeah
>>64252939yea
ye
>>64252939Yep
>>64252939Yes
da
>>64252939In my opinion it's worth it it's only for the Peace of mind. Because these shotguns unless actively abused are going to last longer than your natural lifespan. I have a 500 that I bought in 2013 and I wish I had the 590A1 but I can't justify getting rid of the 500 because it's never let me down.Don't be me. Get the badass A1 and buy the OKC bayonet too.
>>64252939590 is fine.
>>64252939Get a mav 88 and spend the rest on shells
>>64252939I went with the A1 because I wanted something overbuilt and the version with just about all of the bells & whistles is like $700. Pump action shotguns are crazy good value. That said, there are practical reasons to go with the lighter gun. An 18.5" gun with a lighter build will handle a bit better than a 20" brick shithouse. Also I kind of regret going with ghost ring sights, then again I probably just need to get used to them. On the other hand I now have an excuse to get an optic for my shotgun and dip my toes into yet another pond full of shit to spend my money on.
>>64252939You should get a Remington if you're gonna get a cheap shotgun. I've done a few very thorough write ups here about how the Mossberg design is flawed with video and photo evidence of how they can fail due to a critical design flaw. Mine only took about 200 shells before it succumbed to this and left me without a working shotgun during a class. That could happen to you during a firefight. Do not get a mossberg.https://desuarchive.org/k/thread/61463460/#61466051
>>64252939I think you're confusing the 500 with the 590.The 500 is a general purpose shotgun. You can do anything with it since you can get barrels of any sort ranging from 14" SBS entry models to long barrels for clays and hunting. You can also get rifled slug barrels if you want that. The 590 and 590A1 are both specialized combat shotguns. The A1 is just the later version of the 590. You cannot get a wide variety of barrels for these, no long barrels for hunting/clays, and no rifled barrels. So, what do you want to do with this gun? That's the truly important question.
>>64252939the only difference between the 590 and the 590A1 is the A1 has a heavy barrel and metal trigger guard, but that means its about a pound heavier. if you want a gun for hiking/hunting go for the 590, if you want a gun for target shooting/home defense get the A1
>>64254482>You cannot get a wide variety of barrels for these, no long barrels for hunting/clays, and no rifled barrels....unless you change the feeding tube which is threaded and has loctite.
>>64252939I have the 590a1. It’s solid as all hell. Heavy barrel. 8 shells in the tube and one in the chamber. Magpul furniture. Bayonet lug. Even a metal trigger guard. HOWEVER it’s heavy as all hell, and the heavy barrel really isn’t necessary considering it’s a pump, not like you’ll overheat it with rapid fire. Also I have NO experience with the 590.
>>64255829Adding to my own post to mention that it’s FRONT heavy. Since the stock is magpul plastic and the receiver is aluminum, the rear of the gun is pretty light while the front is very heavy due to the larger tube and heavy barrel. So most of the weight is gonna be on your off hand, which of course is made worse by that arm being extended outward to hold it properly.
>>64253486Let me guess you got that gun sometime around 2013 when they had a batch of incorrectly bent shell stop thingies make it through quality control.
>>64255829had both the difference is 590 has plastic trigger guard and potentially different finishes since 590 has more variations. and the barrel.590 is noticibly front heavy, 590a1 is why the hell is it this heavy? you know the answer its the barrel but really whose denting normal 500 thickness barrel or breaking the plastic trigger guards?yeah theoretically it could happen and has happend occasionally but theres so many mossbergs out there and its not happening constantly. its not like every plastic trigger guard disintegrates.got rid of the 590a1 kept the 590 but if im going to shoot a pump at the range i use a 28 inch barreled 500.
>>64253462That last sentence was too real kek.
>>64255841>>64255876The weight thing could be pro or a con, it depends on what you want to do with the gun. If you want to carry it around innawoods the extra weight fucking sucks. If you're just using it as a range toy or for HD then the weight is actually a benefit since it will reduce felt recoil.
>>64255890>If you're just using it as a range toy or for HD then the weight is actually a benefit since it will reduce felt recoil.it does notor if it does its barelyyou should not expect weight do anything to reduce felt recoil in a practical sense.the 500 590 and 590a1 all felt like yeah thats a 12 gauge shotgun in terms of recoil.adding something like a limbsaver will change felt recoil. the weight difference and felt recoil isnt a thing you notice. if its drastic like a 4lb singleshot vs a 8lb pump youll notice. but for mossbergs and they are within 1-2lbs difference nope.
>>64253212I am in the exact same spot as this guy. I would love a 590a1, but my 500 is just so reliable that I can't bring myself to spend the money on a whole new gun to replace it. But if this is your first time, the 590a1 will be more than tough enough to do whatever you need to do.
>>64252939The 590A1 is worth it because of the metal trigger group. Technically the plastic trigger group of the Mossberg 500 is fine for a civilian sporting shotgun, but as soon as you regularily expose it to UV light like with a gun rack in your truck or drop it a lot the trigger group will break down. Even firing it and racking it hard thousands of times could theoretically wear it out as the bolt forces the hammer down over and over egging out the pin holes in the plastic trigger group.A while back a website was selling police trade in Mossberg 500s from like malasia or sometging and the one thing that stood out is they ALL had broken trigger gaurds. Just get a 590A1 for absolute best results. You can buy a metal group later on ebay and put it into your normal 500 but sellers know how desirable metal trigger groups are and charge like $350 for them.
>>64256161I remember reading when I was about to buy the 590a1 that one of the US military requirements was that it had to be all metal other than the stock and fore end. So your comment makes sense.
>>64255917>you should not expect weight do anything to reduce felt recoil in a practical senseYou fail to understand the basics of shotguns. A gun for trap shooting will be heavier than one for upland hunting because mass is good for reducing felt recoil but it's terrible to carry around. There's good reason reason why a range toy like a trap or skeet gun is heavier than a hunting gun.>it does notIt's fucking physics bro. It's really important too, as it explains why some guns suck ass to shoot while others are very comfortable. Light weight is why things like mountain hunting rifles and scandium frame revolvers suck to shoot, and why every target rifle is built as heavy as the rules allow.https://shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php
>>64256304by your standard of any weight matters a shotgun with an empty tube and 1 in the chamber should have noticeable different felt recoil from a 8 in the tube and 1 in the chamber.it doesnt.
im not denying the concept of more mass reducing recoil just that its an incredibly minor factor that doesn't matter to an actual user.if its an extreme like a scandium snubnose vs a 6inch fullsize yeah theres a point you can argue mass did something but this 590 vs 590a1 pretty much the exact same overall profile.
>>64256319>it doesnt.Shoot more.
>>64252939Depends. If you'll rarely take her to the range, go cheap. If you expect to put 200+ rounds through her a month, haul it around in rain, muck, sand and dust storms and bet your life every time you pull that trigger and crank that action she's gonna load and fire.. Then get the beefy one.
>>64256496The barrel being heavier doesn't make the action any more reliable.
>>64252939I wanted the 590a1 but my local store only had the 590 and I didn’t care _that_ much. The 590 is great, solid, I don’t feel any regret despite expecting to.
