It only happened at the start of the movie where they were portrayed as tremendously desperate.In later assaults throughout the movie everyone of them was armed and even had armoured vehicles and tanks.Even in zigger invasion movies like Brest Fortress the defenders weren't armed either and attacked the Germs with wooden chairs, shovels or their bare hands but unlike Enemy at the Gates they miraculously didn't take any casualties lmao. Same thing with the nu-Stalingrad flickslop.
