Henlo friends.I want a .308 rifle that's on the lighter side so I can hunt comfortably with it. I am also a graduate student and therefore poor. Any recommendations on how to start narrowing things down? I've got a bit of choice paralysis since there's so many options and I can't find a way to meaningful distinguish between all the different AR chassis for example.I was going to some shops locally but they just have whatever random shit there and comparing prices online only the handguns are reasonably priced; the rest it's better to buy online and pay an FFL transfer fee. >>64286752Its fine. The stock gas system doesnt have granular enough adjustments for .308. Ive got mine replaced with a pinned riflespeed. The stock it comes with, I forget which one, is just about the most narrow magpul makes. I swapped mine with a vltor I had lying around. I've heard conflicting reports about the Galil Ace Gen 2. Some say Gen 1 was better, some say Gen 2. Does anyone know more?
>>64301859>$330Looking like a close at $370. Most here have done these auctions. But for those who haven't. Add in tax, transfer fee, shipping, credit card fee (in ths case 3%) or cashier's check fee (~free to $5 pluss postage) and maybe transport case or handling. So "the price" at auction close can be deceptively lower than actual in-my-hands price. Still, a blue and walnut 54yo Remington that is profiled and controlled like thier 870, 1100 and Fieldmaster (.22 pump). It had a rub mark, but to round out a classic Remington collection like the above listing, would have been nice example. And Clymer made some 10 rnd mags for this, iirc. Guys I’m seriously considering selling my M1A and replacing it with an AR10 build. Am I retarded? I just feel like did the money I could get from selling the M1A I could build a beast of an AR10 that is more practical and more accurate. Talk some sense into me?
>>64313560Post pic of bookcase titles and I'll talk sense into you after I get coffee.
>>64313640I don't have a recent one, but those books are mostly the wife's. Mine is a mix of King, McCarthy, Crichton, and Nevill with various noir, thrillers, and westerns mixed in like David Joy, Don Winslow, Jack Carr, and William Johnstone .
>>64313730Fair eoungh. Dispassionately sepaking, there are a number of reasons to build your AR10 as a second battle rifle. It can hlod a few twists from start to finish, so may not be a weekend build, but not too mysterious. I suggest keeping the M1a and buying your rcvr pair first. Then, as your budget allows, incrementally add the remaining parts. Protip, create a spreadsheet for your build list segregating compatable AR15 parts from AR10 exclusive parts. As a preliminart exercise, this will get you started with your knowledge base. Add n extra lines for acceptable alternates like barrels, triggers and scopes. If you don't want to mount a scope on your AR10, then just stick the M1a irons and forget it.
>>64313815So here's the thing... when I started punching out past 100y with the M1A I was REALLY let down by its accuracy. It's like minute of paper out past 200 and I enjoy doing more than just shooting steel. So I bought and tweaked a Bergara HMR in 6.5c. It'll shoot sub-minute all day even with cheap ammo. I kind of just want something in between those two. Something more accurate than the M1A without the heft and weight of a bolt gun. Maybe I'm putting too much faith in an AR10, but my 16" BCM 5.56 upper can shoot 1-1.5 MOA all day long with a 4x ACOG and cheap M193. The M1A can't come close to that and it cost almost double lol.
>>64313876Kinda apples v. oranges. Innd your state rifle and pistol club and start shooting NRA Highpower with your M1a. Be open to coaching and when you find your 600yrd line-prone position just isn't improving, look for a matched AR10 upper and lower. I would check out V Seven rcvrs. Tl;dr, shoot more, listen to the better scoring guys. Drop the bipod, lol.

>>64350555I feel like his timeline got a bit muddled on some details. PTR introduced the polymer trigger housings shortly after JLD sold his stake in the company and the management changed. JLD metal trigger housings didn't have the three positions still marked; they polished off the Auto setting and added another stop so the selector couldn't rotate past Semi. JLD also always had a heavy profile barrel with the HK thread pitch; they didn't offer a true G3 barrel profile until PTR INC. introduced the GI model.
>>64282178Alright fellas, STGW parts build guy again. Next year I should have the funds to have the 80% finished and there are at least 2 different people in the upper midwest doing barrels. My sort of heretical question is this:>I am thinking of asking if I can get the end threaded, and have the brake/flash hider made as a separate piece instead of the 1 piece assembly the original was. The reasons for doing this are 1. if for some reason the brake gets damaged, it would fuck over the entire barrel, 2. would allow me to mount different things (have looked into suppressing it), and 3. should reduce the cost significantly. If it is threaded on correctly, it should look invisible. Am I approaching this with solid logic? Also do any Swissanons know of any potential people I could send the removeable FCU to maybe in Switzerland to have it polished and made to feel really nice? Since it uses pins to attach to the receiver which is the serialized part as far as the US is concerned I probably can send it anywhere I want without difficulties. Might get a butter dish scope mount with a pic rail but that's for later. Thank ye. It's been a weird time in my life with COVID and lack of job ambition repeating the year again and again and again but I really need to move on with my life lmao.

>>64350555>picked up a GIRK the same day the video droppedSpeaking of, out the box the charging handle is pretty stiff and i noticed a pretty significant amount of metal shavings on the charging handle and within the tube/some on the bolt carrier when removed. There’s a burr on the bottom hole on the tube for punching the charging handle pin, a larger burr/gouge on the interior of the tube, and the pin was walked out enough to bind inside the tube but i hammered it back in place. Should i be concerned about the burrs/shavings or will they iron themselves out during break-in?

>>64359395It is alright, finally went out to the range after far too long and was disappointed with my performance. I'd love to go take my rifles out regularly but nearest outdoor range is a 90 minute drive. Indoor range near me feels like a waste at only 25 yards max.

Hey gang, galilfag here, anyone have a 16 or 18" fal who has input on if they wish theyd gone with the other? im looking at selling my imbel rifle to a friend of mine to buy a para fal. Im stuck between 16 and 18" barrel. The 16 looks way better but ive heard they have reliability issues related to gassing and that the muzzle flash is absurd. I have a 16" scout rifle (picrel) and i can attest to the muzzle flash, but i haven't really heard consistent answers one way or the other on reliability. Just looking for some input before i get one. If anyone in new england happens to have either one and doesnt mind letting me throw a few mags through it email me at Galilfag@protonmail.com. Ill bring the 308 galil to sweeten the pot lol.
>>64363878Can't speak from experience (I've only had 21" FALs) but I would pick the 18".
>>64360166As far as I’m aware it’s harder than building an AK, which is in itself very uphill. Precise welds are indicated with a receiver flat and if you’re not used to that level of metalwork it’s better to just go for a PTR-91 or gamble with a Century. I like my PTR, it just took a while for it to accept tar sealed ammo
>>64363878>fellow new englanderbasedI have a 16in SA58 and it's ran great with whatever kind of brass ammo I've fed it, even when I've been a little lazy about cleaning and lubing. Only time it's given me trouble is when I've had to fuck with the gas, but I haven't had to do that in 1000~ rounds or so.I can't say I've noticed the muzzle flash being all that bad, but I also can't say it's something I've really paid attention to.I'd offer to sell you mine but sadly she's fixed stock, best of luck anon.
>>64363878Flash isn't bad on the para model FALs. 16" is what you want for peak compactness and weight savings. There's the pistol FAL option but those don't save much on weight and you get extreme flash with awful blow back concussion.>The 16 looks way better but ive heard they have reliability issues related to gassing and that the muzzle flash is absurdIf they are, they don't exist on video cause I've never seen a Para FAL that didn't work, that was made in the last ten years. >>64363946>>64365057>>64366394After discussion with one of my other gunsmith friends, im just gunna convert it over to a para fal instead of selling and buying a new one. Seems like the reliability issues I heard of were primarily from people chopping 21" barrel fals to 16" and not enlarging the gas port. Im probably just gunna go with a 16" barrel.
