Everyone criticizes the AT-AT from Star Wars as a badly designed military vehicle, but considering that the Empire was mostly fighting third-world tribals that didn't have anything except poorly equipped infantry, it was an excellent way to always have the high ground. That thing worked flawlessly until the Rebellion came about.

As we've seen IRL they're different enough mission profiles that the kind of army optimized for fighting one can fare pretty badly at fighting the other. The US experienced that in Afghanistan, Iraq etc and had to adapt on the fly pretty hard and pretty expensively and it took significant time. Conversely it then went to hard the other way which left it less prepared for a resurgent multipolar world then if it had elected Gore or Bush hadn't gone full retard and instead of the whole GWOT they just armored airplane doors, bombed Afghanis for a few months, declared total victory and that was the end of it and MIC continued on investing in normal stuff.
