Everyone criticizes the AT-AT from Star Wars as a badly designed military vehicle, but considering that the Empire was mostly fighting third-world tribals that didn't have anything except poorly equipped infantry, it was an excellent way to always have the high ground. That thing worked flawlessly until the Rebellion came about.
>>
>>64287871
So it's really good, just so long as no one fights back. Then it's in trouble.
>>
>>64287921
Remember, this is a universe where only the chosen one of the near-extinct space wizards was capable of coming up with the idea of tripping them with the infinity strength harpoon launchers that all of their aircraft were armed with for unclear reasons.
>>
>>64287921
>So it's really good, just so long as no one fights back. Then it's in trouble.
nta and am generally kinda critical of Star Wars, but in this case I'd actually kinda defend it particularly in retrospect. I'd more contrast it with the GWOT vs real peer war. As we've seen IRL they're different enough mission profiles that the kind of army optimized for fighting one can fare pretty badly at fighting the other. The US experienced that in Afghanistan, Iraq etc and had to adapt on the fly pretty hard and pretty expensively and it took significant time. Conversely it then went to hard the other way which left it less prepared for a resurgent multipolar world then if it had elected Gore or Bush hadn't gone full retard and instead of the whole GWOT they just armored airplane doors, bombed Afghanis for a few months, declared total victory and that was the end of it and MIC continued on investing in normal stuff.
>>
>>64287921
The enemy infantry can fight back, and it'll still have the high ground. Keep in mind that in this universe the Empire relied heavily on its "navy" (basically our air force and space force combined), so the army was just a low priority.

>>64287965
Exactly, the armed forces of the world has decided to focus on killing Kurds, Serbians, Palestinians, and (insert other weak nation here), so it's starting to forget how to fight its peers. The same thing happened when the colonial powers who were used to invading Africa started WW1.

AT-99 Scorpion

Its a ducted twin tilt rotor-fan meme incarnate that fills whatever role the suits up stairs imagine it doing from CAS, escorting the flavour of the movie death star to supporting mining operations.
Instead of giving troops more rope to deploy from it comes with vine cutters and ducted fans to protect it from dense lush. It also comes with no ejection seats because an unpowered landing is prefferable in case the proppulsion suffers a critical failiure. Has enough gun to level a city but no cities to level as it was first deployed on Earth to combat eco terrorists and student protestors after RDA drones got short circuted by EMP weapons. Logic is, you can't short circuit a human. Later deployed on Pandora, where it was frequently observed in combat to be iddly hovering by as it gets fraged by iliterate gigasmurfs.

The reall reason it exists is because Cammeron needed an "aggressive, powerful, and arrogant looking machine, similar to an angry insect, and it was named by James Cameron after such an insect" to serve as an analog to Pandora Banshees. It exists to be destroyed over and over again to satiate Cameron's humiliation fetish.

>>
>>64287871
was it even bad? yeah tripping was silly, but it still attacked unsupported across several miles of flat ground into prepared defenses and air support and won.
>>
>>64289060
>attacked unsupported

yeah I don't know why people don't remember that the star destroyer that was tasked with orbital bombardment in support got nuked by that ion cannon. Still don't know why they didn't deploy the tie fighter compliment that executor class alone has like a dozen squadrons on it.

also it took an apprentice space wizard to pull off the only successful trip atttack IIRC, which also cost that entire flight of speeders.

So hey yeah as long as you can field a massive ion cannon complex, prepared and pre-sighted anti-armor field guns, 4 speeders and a space wizard for every single AT-AT then you're good to go lol.

Except the empire still won that fight and captured their objective.

How exactly do you design war machines to counter literal space magic?

> Still don't know why they didn't deploy the tie fighter compliment that executor class alone has like a dozen squadrons on it.

The empire is not exactly known for being a smart fighting force at the best of times, and as for why no one else said to? When Vader just killed the Admiral and said "Send in the Walkers" are you really gonna tell him "Well maybe we should send out TIEs!"

The Empire notoriously did not take snub fighters nearly as seriously as they should have, and all things considered I can't blame Vader for not bothering with TIEs. Just three years earlier he watched the best pilots in the galaxy fail to stop 20 odd fighters from blowing the Death Star apart. Even if he's unaware Luke is on planet, at this point he's probably lost faith in his Starfighter Corps
>>
>>64290100
all cogent points

to be fair the walkers did get the job done anyway.
>>
>>64290160
That they did. They were a decent enough tool, had some obvious weakpoints but if you're setting up a command post in a town? That's more than a little intimidating if your command post is 5 stories off the ground and has attached laser cannons that can turn you and your vehicle to a flaming pile of scrap

Based quints for AMP suit. For critique I think the shoulders are too high, it's like having eyes in your chest from the pilot's perspective. And I'm not sure if the leg controls being pressure sensitive is going to work outside controlled and calm situations. Maybe there's just enough AI filtering to prevent the pilot from trashing the legs around
>>
>>64288023
Those things are all-terrain via just plowing through forests, buildings, enemy fortifications, etc.
>A hill that's too steep will defeat it
That's true for literally any non flying vehicle though, that thing has enough ground contact with it's giant tonka wheels that the square-cube law is actually going to help it, it's gonna be so absurdly heavy it bites into elevated terrain and grip into it like it's got a massive spoiler on it. This would be a bad thing irl since that means you need a fucking ridiculous amount of torque to actually move at all, but it's scifi bullshit- if you have generators able to power half the shit in setting that means you can use said power sources for giving traditional wheeled vehicles truly terrifying amounts of torque.

The real question is why didn't they take those monsters and make dedicated artillery versions that have those anti-capital ship lasers seen in The Clone Wars, you'd have a vehicle that's orders of magnitude faster than the literal walking speed giga laser platform that's got a weapons system strong enough to threaten full size capital ships.

LAAT is probably the coolest "dropship" in fiction, it's iconic. The only questionable part is the ball lasers that need crewmen strapped in them, that was just ol' George going
>muh WWII bombers
though.

Personally instead of the suicide balls I'd prefer if it had hardpoints sticking out with mounted lasers/blasters so instead of WWII bomber you had Space Vietnam GET SUM action.

>>
>>64290352
Because most of the time you wouldn't be deploying AT-ATs in a situation where you'd need them to play an anti-capital role, you'd have star destroyers on site to help with it.

That and the rebels until the late war really didn't deploy their capital ships in a way that the separatists did. They didn't have the fleet power that the Empire or even the Seps did.

Also the power drain would be insane. You'd be better off having a dedicated anti-capital ship weapons platform than adding that to the AT-AT. It already can knock out pretty much any ground target from miles away, no need to fuck up that ability just because it'd be nice to stick a turbolaser on it or some kind of mass launcher like the ATTE

any discussion about star wars becomes moot the second you step outside of the pretense that you must always be close enough to physically look into someone's eyes to kill them in that universe
the AT-AT was always meant to represent something along the line of Xerxes and the persians putting armor and a ballista on something retarded like an elephant

luke is the arthurian figure that must fight the black knight to kill the evil mage who has cast a spell on his father
han solo is every spaghetti western cowboy ever, whose sidekick is a savage that only he understands
it is shot in exactly the same way that you would shoot a movie about the mexican-american war or some medieval battle, which is the reason why every single battle in the series is either "we're doing a raid on this heavily fortified position against all odds" or "we have to hold this heavily fortified forlone hope against all odds" and every space scene mirrors a naval battle in "knife fight in phone booth" range

Ep. 1-3 are the only ones that attempt to realistically portray politics and war, since there's usually actually a reason to be somewhere doing something rather than just blockading something from orbit and shelling it into oblivion
