British turtled up and refused to fight outside of their defensive perimeters in port towns.

When they did maneuver it was done in a rout and they got btfo on the way to the next defensive position only this time they had less men and material.

The entire campaign in the east was hilariously shit. Only America acted with any competency.
>>
>how did one of the most powerful militaries in the world defeat a couple of colonial stragglers that were part of a shopkeeping empire
yeah, it's a mystery
>>

>America acted with competence
Not if MacArthur has something to say about it!
>>
>>64289731
By couple of colonial stragglers did you mean 130,246 troops? Japanese did have more aircraft though

And by ‘shopkeeping’ empire did you mean ‘largest empire the world has ever seen”?
>>
>>64289731
Not him but colonial stragglers? Really?
>Send your best battleship (at the time when battleships were regarded as the peak of naval warfare) to Singapore with escorts
>Station 140k troops there, including experienced British and Australian troops there
>Spend assloads on land based naval guns, air bases, ports, etc
>Lose it all
To put it in perspective, Dunkirk might have led to the loss of 300k troops. In the Malayan campaign, virtually every single of the 140k British troops got killed or captured.
The British personally lost about as many troops in Malaya as they did in Gallipoli. And the strategic loss was far greater.
>>
>>64289750
Filipinos had a more competent defensive strategy and had an active insurgency (that actually affected the war) until liberation.

America did get outplayed but it wasn't from being shit and refusing the fight like the bongs did.
>>
>>64289763
Filipinos had that. Not the Americans in charge.

>Finally, there is one more thing that I would like to tell women -- you are either already a mother or will become a mother in future. You should clearly realize that one of a mother's responsibilities is a very important role in the "human education" of the next generation.

> [...] Education does not begin at kindergarten or on entry to elementary school. It should begin when you breastfeed a newborn baby. It is a mother's privilege to have a special feeling that no one else can have when she cuddles and breastfeeds her baby. Mothers should give their love to their baby both physically and mentally, as they are the baby's source of life. Breastfeeding can be done by another, and nourishment can be provided by other animals, or can be substituted for by a bottle. Yet nothing else can substitute for mother's love.

>You should raise the joyful feeling of breastfeeding to the level of intellectual emotion and refined love. Mother's love will constantly flow into her baby's body through breastfeeding. The fundamental elements of future education must exist in embryo in mother's milk. Attention to the baby's needs can be the basis for education. Untiring mothering skills should naturally develop into a higher level of educational skill. I am not a specialist on education and therefore I am not sure how appropriate it is, but I would like to call this kind of education "breastfeeding education." Please bear this simple and ordinary phrase in your mind. These are the last words of the person who took your children's lives away from you.

lol no
the Commonwealth had like maybe two brigades of experienced troops and the rest were fresh farmboys from India and Australia

the Japs had full naval and air supremacy, only a child would think that infantry headcount matters under such circumstances
>>
>>64290068
You forgot to mention they had full naval supremacy because they destroyed Task Force Z. And full air superior because they likewise BTFO the shitty Buffalos and decent Hurricanes. Even then, at the time air and naval power were little more than a kind of artillery/ground support. On land they also BTFO the British with tanks and aggressive action
>>

>at the time air and naval power were little more than a kind of artillery/ground support
WW2 is literally THE war which saw airpower come into full being as the decisive combat arm of the 20th century
Besides,
>little more than a kind of artillery
?
That's inadvertent high praise, given that artillery has long been said to be the "king of battle"
>On land they also BTFO the British with tanks and aggressive action
The land war was also indefensible given the numbers involved and aerial and naval supremacy
Like i said, you people are unfamiliar with the terrain here

And I'll just pose one question to you all: go ahead, try and figure out how to defend 1,000 miles of coast with 1 division of regulars and 2 divisions of Indian farmboys given enemy air and naval superiority
>>
Japan had air and naval supremacy.

Japan had a hyper aggressive military doctrine that emphasized constant aggression, as well as unconventional tactics like night attacks, bayonet charges, and poison gas to keep the enemy off balance and make up for their deficiency in terms of tanks and artillery. The British played right into it with their complacent defense of the east and the inexperienced colonial soldiers broke and ran just like the Chinese.
>>
>>64289806
This unironically lines up perfectly with attachment theory of psychology and with current best practices for infant feeding. Formula feeding is a betrayal of your species and family and should be punished with whippings.
>>
>>64290768
>deficiency in terms of tanks and artillery
they literally had more tanks and artillery than the British, dude
at the couple of battles where the Commonwealth troops managed to make a stand, the Japs brought up artillery and blasted them away. another key factor not considered when making stupid raw comparisons of headcounts is that the British brigades were very underequipped, with little to no artillery. the Japs easily counterbatteried what guns they did have and that was that.

they could have done more damage and made better use of their aerial supremacy, but the Japs had very poor aerial support and coordination, generally their bombers just conducted independent medium altitude level bombing on towns and road junctions. WW1 tactics. they used Ki-27s and A6Ms to attack troop concentrations with light bombs and low-level strafing attacks. sometimes they were effective, sometimes they were merely nuisances.
>>
>>64290822
I meant in general not specifically for the malaysian campaign anon. They developed a hyper aggressive infantry focused doctrine mostly in response to the soviet border skirmishes, where they learned that even shitty combined arms would BTFO them. The point was to close aggressively with the enemy so it would be easier to use infantry-based anti-tank weapons while making it so the enemy couldn't use their artillery without blowing up their own men. The night fighting and bayonet charges came later on when they realized most Chinese soldiers would instantly rout if the japs sneezed at them.

It just so happens that the doctrine works even better when you have material superiority.
>>
>>64290869
>I meant in general
oh
well, the Japs had an innovative tactic or two. they were really good in flanking and infiltration which required immense noise discipline, which is something they can be admired for.

the trouble is that they were one-trick ponies, and when the "all-round defence" counter was developed they found they had nothing left
also their infiltration tactics sometimes relied on using captured enemy uniforms, which is perfidy. warcrime.
and flanking through thick jungle relied on very rigid operational timetables which sometimes went awry.
>>
Japan won because they embraced diversity, incorporating Korean and Chinese into their ranks. They were unbeatable until they met an even more diverse foe in the United States.
>>
>>64290931
They were pretty much the only WW2 military that seriously trained for fighting at night or in heavy rain. The real thing that beat them was having their ability to maneuver being restricted by lack of supply and area to move as well as fighting actually disciplined troops with proper MG support that would stand and fight.
IIRC Japanese officers weren't even really taught how to properly defend something. They were trained to move and counterattack with very aggressive flanking maneuvers.

>>64290237

Mini landings behind British lines.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
>>
Singapore was a city that was difficult to defend, as the encirclement would be complete if the Strait of Johor were reached. It also had a large population to feed.
Morale of the British Indian troops seemed dire, perhaps because even the possibility of retreat was in doubt.
The Japanese even had secret documents on British defense plans that had been seized by a German merchant raider the previous year.
>>
>>64289760
How many of those troops were first-line englishmen?
>>
>>64290237
>shitty buffalos.
Explain how the Finns did so well with it then.
>>
>>64291921
Who were they fighting?
>>
>>64290822
This is false. They had way more artillery. Not to mention the massive 15' fortress guns of the Johore battery (contrary to popular belief they could be turned around and were used for shelling the japanese). The British just had far inferior spotting, firing and coordination to effectively use it
>>
>>64291913
Approximately half the infantry were British and Australian, and all of the air force. Ironically the most vicious and determined fighters were from the Malay regiment.
>>
>>64291921
Skill issue, legitimately. The indies was seen as a 2nd-rate post which led to shitalian-tier performance - lack of service coordination, confusing orders, improperly maintained equipment. They even suffered an Armchair Copelord among the commissioned ranks.
>>
>>64289677
>Commodore Perry
>Tsushima

A decade of combat and live fire testing, and knowing how fast and hard they had to move to punch above their weight. Even the USN didn't quite get Carrier maneuvers down pat until mud-late war.
>>
>>64290974
>the only WW2 military that seriously trained for fighting at night
mainly because it wasn't very effective and even the Japs had most of their night attacks beaten off or if succeeding then with pyrrhic losses
>The real thing that beat them was having their ability to maneuver being restricted by lack of supply and area to move as well as fighting actually disciplined troops with proper MG support that would stand and fight
yeah probably
