By law, anyone dead or injured in the crossfire is the attackers' fault, so if they're caught or fugitives there are extra attempted murder or murder charges on their head, and either way you can be sure whatever media the police can contact will be publicizing the innocents injured by the careless and cowardly would-be cop killer.

A coordinating officer behind the line has an easier time judging what's happening and where when the shields are transparent like that.Theoretically at least it's probably better for the protesters too. Seeing the people on the other side of the line and anything being currently done behind it is probably better for tensions than just a black wall of shields that CS grenades or rubber bullets occasionally jumpscare them from. Especially in this case where the NG aren't exactly there because they think they need to be, so there's probably at least a little more sympathy than usual.
