Anyone else learn to shoot a gun alone? I'm 31 and never fired one. I own a shitty Ruger LCP and never shot it, there's an indoor range 15 minutes away, just never gone. Feels nervous to go by myself and teach myself. Did anyone else learn completely alone without friends to teach them?
>>64295720There are people working there.
>>64295720Yeah, I taught myself to shoot with an air pistol when I was a kid.Still a viable way for adults to learn the basics. As a teaching tool, air pistols have some major advantages over real firearms.>quiet>can be safely shot in the average suburban backyard, basement, or even large room.>ammo is very cheap>zero recoil, so it doesn't cause noobs to develop bad habits like flinching
>>64295720Ok here's what you do. Buy snap caps (dummy rounds) in the caliber of what you got, and use them to train dry fires/failure to fires in the comfort of your own home. Do it until you can do it in your sleep. Then go find a range.
>>64295720Are you dry firing and practicing safe handling at home?If so, just go into the woods and mag dump a stump to break your cherry
Grew up shooting occasionally with my dad, but have literally never gone by myself until last April? May? Then last month went out with my younger sister. No need to feel nervous because most people are doing their own thing, range workers are generally helpful especially if you're new
>>64295720Watch youtube videos on your specific gun. It's goofy-tier, but hey, that's your tier for now.>>64295737I can only offer my experiences, but if someone comes to the range with absolutely ZERO experience (yup, not even the manual) and tells us, we will go out of our way to make sure they learn the basics of loading, unloading, AIMING, and the four rules. We'll use the patronizing baby voice as we help them load a single round, all while explaining to them that even if they drop it after firing, they at least won't be shot. Usually after a magazine/cylinder or two they are good enough to do the absolute basics without hurting someone. We keep rubber ducky pistols and rifles to help as well, so we can show them what right and wrong looks like without actually swinging a barrel around. It's usually fun to help a newbie take that first step. As long as they pass the personality sniff-test (school shooter/suicidal) they usually are extremely grateful and relieved after their first hour. Get new blood in the sport. Our latest newbie was a clear-cut white-collar conservative who never worked with his hands and was clearly motivated to get something after Charlie Kirk. Handled with care, his assumptions will drop away and he'll be an ok casual shooter.
>>64295832>>64295737Wait they will do that for free if you paid the range fee?>>64295759My ex's brother told me that those were a waste of money and you can dryfire a bit to practice. But for like clearing a round I could see that. >>64295766I try to yeah.I don't know how deep I'd have to go into the woods around here. Plenty around but if people hear gunshots they'll still probably call the cops. I mean like even if I went a mile into deep forest.
Lots of cope ITT. Yeah you can "learn" to shoot but you will never be proficient or have the "true" adoration for firearms like you would if you had been taught in childhood
>>64295990>Wait they will do that for free if you paid the range fee?No guarantee. Range Safety Officers run a wide range of personalities, don't be a dangerous asshole around strangers and the more generous ones MAY help you out. YMMV and yes your appearance/class/race/attitude etc will determine if you're helped or if you're left on your own until you do something stupid. And for the record, I do agree with that fag Botkin that public ranges suck. Get into a privately owned range i.e. know someone with land who likes to shoot.Good luck. Maybe.
>>64295720SMLE, I can drop someone at about a mile. Not a useful skill unless you need to drop someone with irons at about a mile.
I was born knowing how to shoot. Maybe watch some youtube videos.
>>64295720Buy a .22 anon. They're cheap and it'll be much easier to learn the fundamentals.Learn on an LCP and you'll probably just develop a flinch and a shitty grip.
>>64296499Good point.Man I'm a NEET for the first time in years after getting laid off and I told myself once I worked fulltime I'd buy a gun get into shooting and then never did.Is Ruger 10/22 still good? that's what was recommended years ago.
>>64295720Hey man! I'm 38 and just took my first pistol class and shot a gun for the first time on Saturday. Both parents were police officers but never taught me. It's pretty cool. I hope you go try! Some places let you try out like rental guns so you can have some fun
>>64295990i go to outdoor ranges with volunteer RSOs and they're always just super friendly boomers. any time i bring friends who have never shot or have little exerience, they get involved. they genuinely want to make sure you're being safe. can't say the same for indoor ranges.
>>64296926it's a love/hate relationship for me. cheap ammo means i can shoot hundreds of rounds in a day without hurting my wallet, great weight and ergonomics, tons of aftermarket parts. but i get so many feed/ejection issues regardless of whatever ammo i'm using that it gets frustrating to shoot at times.
>>642957201) Be aware of the five rules of firearms safety, and read the manual for any gun you operate.2) Wear BOTH ear plugs and Ear muffs, as hearing loss is cumulative, irreversible and tinnitus does not stop once it starts.3) Ask for clairifcation from the range officers of anything you don't understand.Seriously stop being a pussy and go have fun, I learned shooting by myself as well, it's not a big deal.
I'm kinda the same way. I bought a glock 17 over a year ago now, hearing protection, targets and a case of ammo and I just never went to the range. Just kept putting it off and working myself up until it this huge thing. I can't help but think I'm going to make a critical mistake and ended up drawn on by the RSO/others. Doesn't help I'm normally a very nervous/anxious personally naturally. I have no friends and no family either so I have no one who would go with me. Doing anything alone is kinda the same way because I feel massively self-conscious.
>>64295720A lot of ranges host lessons or classes
>>64295720Yepas long as you follow the basic safety rules you won't injure yourself or othersas long as you don't act like the nigger couple who comes in and fucks around nobody will judge you negativelyask questions without spilling spaghetti and the staff won't call you a retard to your face and they'll get you through any interaction
>>64295720 I learned to shoot by reading Wikipedia articles about grip and stance and watching YouTube videos. I own an LCP and it's a terrible gun to learn to shoot with. The recoil is snappy, the sights suck, and .380 is more expensive than 9x19mm or .22 LR. My recommendation, if at all possible, is to sell the LCP and get either a full-size or compact pistol in 9x19mm or .22 LR with good sights and learn on that.
>>64297001there are millions of uscombined we have dozens of hours of experience shooting
>>64295720>Did anyone else learn completely alone without friends to teach them?Lots of people do. That being said, learning by yourself without proper instruction can lead to what is known as a "training scar," which is when you learn to do something in a suboptimal way and unintentionally form a bad habit in the process; when there's no one around to teach you the best way to do it, the chances of this happening increase.
>>64297370Good point yeah. I have the same issue with archery, I want to take more lessons soon to make sure I'm not fucking up.
>>64295720Go take a class from a reputable instructor. Most places offer a CCW 1 or intro to handguns course which will be basic safety plus some live fire.
>>64295720parents never cared for guns but didnt mind me wanting to get a rifle for hunting, so i went to a firearms safety class, learned the basics, and bought a rifle and went on from therelittle did my parents know this was going to turn into a ridiculous hobby where i ask them for a bunch of money to buy a new gun every year despite being a highschooler at the time
>>64297135We finally moved to a place with some woods so I could actually shoot but I was afraid it was too noisy and would annoy the neighbors so didn't make use of the opportunity for years. Recently, I bought a couple suppressors so I can actually shoot more but now I feel like a goofball having such high speed equipment and no skills.
>>64295990Your exes brother is retarded.
>>64295720Walk into literally any range and tell the person working there that you've never fired a gun before and they will go out of their way to teach you like you're their goddamn son. Stop being a bitch and just ask somebody.
use yourself as target practice, that way you don't have to deal with other people making you nervous at the range!
You're all sick people. I hope you all get cancer. Fuck youse all. I put a curse upon you all. Fuck ya mudda
>>64295720Dad taught me how to shoot guns and safety rules when I was 10 years old. He bought me Rossi .22/.410 combo gun.
>>64295720Take a class if you can, or maybe youll get lucky taking to someone who works at the range and theyll teach you the basics for free. Also maybe get something a little bigger like a compact (glock 19 size) or full size(glock 17 size) theyre more comfortable to shoot so youll have a better experience, you can also rent guns that size at most ranges. the ruger lcp isnt a bad carry option but its not a very pleasant shooting experience in my opinion. If you really cant talk to people then watch youtube videos and get snap caps and practice dry firing and some reload/malfunction drills before going so you feel comfortable handling it
