Japan has successfully tested a naval railgun at sea against a target ship. According to ATLA, the railgun, mounted on the JMSDF’s test ship Asuka, successfully carried out long-range firings and the shooting at a target ship during the trials. The tests of the gun were conducted with the cooperation of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The photos show the moment of the target ship being aimed at, as well as that of the railgun firing, using the Asuka. The fire control system is also visible next to the railgun. ATLA said details of the tests will be reported at its “ATLA Technological Symposium 2025” to be held on November 11-12 in Tokyo. In previous trials conducted by ATLA, a projectile fired from a 6-meter-long, 40-millimeter-caliber barrel reached a hypersonic speed of 2,297 meters per second (nearly Mach 7) surpassing the roughly 1,750 meters per second achieved by a tank gun, the fastest conventional artillery system.
>>64295978Asia is growing stronger. Despite America being the first to begin railgun research and making important advances, they gave up while Japan continued advancing and produced a working weapon.

>>64296003>they gave upAt least our McDonald's doesn't serve sushi.
>>64296003It's a good thing Japan picked up this system again through technology transfer because there's different roles for it. It's meant to be a missile defense system while the US wanted luxurious range for theirs.
>>64296011>-t. battleships fanJapanese railguns are for anti-missile defense not shore bombardment dummy. 40mm is a historical sweet spot for it.
>>64296051>fucking autocorrect changed ludicrous to luxurious
>>64296011>>64296054Im not good at math, but 40mm projectile weighing 10kg going 3km/s probably has a fuck load of energy.
>>64296051>missile defenseIs this thing supposed to stop a ballistic missile in terminal phase? My understanding is that railguns have too low of a rate of fire to replace the good old Aegis + CWIS combo.
>>64296413Phalanx based CWIS is reformer bullshit, SeaRAM CWIS is much better. Intercepting with a railgun projectile in conjunction with SeaRAM should in theory be easier as there's less travel time to take into account.
>Asuka
>>64295978I hope the target ship was a North Korean fishing boat.
Any recent news about the Chinese naval railgun?

>>64296003thing America thing Japan memetest shots of developmental railgun (America)test shots of developmental railgun (Japan)Personally I wish we kept funding the railgun for the same reason we fund space telescopes or non-stem academics, it's just an inherent moral good to pursue knowledge and achievement that makes the world a more beautiful place, like railguns. In practical terms it certainly works as far as the technology being real and being able to fire some dakka super fast, but working -better- than conventional boring shit on the cost/effectiveness/rate of fire/reliability etc calculation is hard to be very optimistic about even if we put in massive investments in time and money, so we sadly canned it.

>>64295978Japan is so much better than china
>>64295978Based. Japan needs to prepare for the inevitable Chinese and/or North Korean chimpout and build up their military again. The West is, sadly, untrustworthy as fuck. They should just form their own defensive alliance at this point with South Korea and Taiwan and maybe the Philipines or something. The murderous commies on the mainland need to be tard-wrangled.

>>64301255The problem with the US gun wasn't that they couldn't get the barrel life they wanted, it's that they realized they couldn't get the power they wanted without giving up on the concept of barrel life entirely. This 20MJ railgun is far more conservative than anything the US ever considered.
Railguns are fascinating because the implication of successfully creating them is that you will no longer need the resources that go into making gun powder. It reminds me of the shift from the bronze age to the iron age.

>>64301324are there unclassified graphs on how barrel life scales with power? >>64301324Serious question, what performance advantage is this lower power gun going to have over a traditional one?
>>64301469The japs are probably aiming for anti-missile capabilities, specifically anti-hyper sonics.
>>64301481I see. do we know if the projectile will be solid shot or some kind of proximity fuze? I feel like the former will be difficult to achieve the desired accuracy necessary
>>64301516Nothing is ever solid shot. It'll probably be a datalinked or timed prefragmented shell like the one 35mm SPAAGs use.
>>64296003>implying this isn't built off of American developments>implying the US won't acquire or purchase the tech if Japan brings it to fruition Have you perhaps considered that the US and Japan are allies and don't regularly partake in unprovoked duplicitous behavior with each other?>>64297912I've been saying this for years, Russia and China are particularly infamous offenders when it comes to that. Some of the most funny examples in the recent past are Russia's many attempts to scam defense customers like the whole Algerian MiG-29 debacle>>64301228The JMSDF hasn't had an Ayanami since 1986
>>64301516Definitely will be airburst. Only possible problem I could imagine is how will the round be programmed after being subjected to massive magnetic fields.
>>64296617the bottleneck is still at the power source, there has to be a revolutionary breakthrough there before railgun technology can really start to mature
>>64301614You mean the capacitors? Because there's no problem with power sources from a ship.
>>64301614Just do small-scale nuclear reactors
>>64301614Zumwalt has 70 MW of onboard power generation.
>>64301578>how will the round be programmed after being subjected to massive magnetic fieldsJust program it in the breech. There's no powder explosion to damage the contacts and it's not 1941, it can be wireless too.Could still be muzzle programmed, just needs the receiver to be sensitive to a narrow band of magnetism.
>>64301578Use the massive magnetic forces to do the programming, like yelling a set of instructions instead of speaking them

>>64301614Are you retarded? Imagine a science-fiction power source which is safe, stable, easy to transport, cheap, and 10x the power density of TNT. It's called diesel fuel. Ships everywhere use it.

The Nature is healing.
>>64304427Smug 5th level brats need correction.
>>64301302Then why don't they share?
>>64296413Rate of fire for a railgun is basically determined more by capacitor capacity (or recharge rate) than anything else except for barrel life on a more macro scale. So it would be possible to build like a floating capacitor bank and prime movers if you wanted to go all in on using it as an anti-ASBM/HGV tool. Not sure you *should* but there is nothing in physics preventing that from working
>>64295978wake me up when the attach it to a Gundam
>>64297923Ours was run by ARL with BAE as the prime so it was always a pretty multinational thing. In the end, the barrel life and capacitor problems were all fixable, but SPAWAR realized to make use of it with current capacitor technology would require basically a clean sheet new hull design with a lot of the multi-mission capacity of a regular destroyer deleted just for the railgun equipment, possibly up to and including the radar. The alternative was a nuclear powered, CGN or BBN class ship that they knew congress would not approve so there were both technical and budgetary/political challenges that killed it. >t. Worked in the lab immediately next door to ARL and routinely pissed myself when they fired the railgun because they never informed us beforehand
>>64304559So now the Japs are in a great position to make it happen from what it seems.
>>64295978> *yawn*Impress me with a wave motion gun. I'll bow.
>>64301302If you can't even distinguish between "vessel" and "vassal", maybe you should not post.
This seems pointless. Regular missiles can already get fast. Lasers are also even faster. Much like with battletech mechs, the ideal combo is lasers and missiles.
