I want to build ONE retro style rifle. Do I want a 20 inch A1 or a 11.5 CAR-15?

Unless you put a real moderator or suppressor on the 11.5, it's going to be absolutely deafening and concussive to shoot. And unfortunately all the clone moderators seem to suck. A1s are extremely comfy. It points way better than it should, and the irons are wonderfully simple. Recoil is very mild. Of course it's still loud, but it's not like a fucking firework going off at your ear.

Granted I double up on earpro but I do that no matter what I'm shooting.With that said, for shooting, it does indeed suck shit compared to the A1. It has a sort of snappy recoil that just shouldn't exist for an AR15. Definitely the worst AR in my collection and I'm honestly a bit confused why I haven't sold it off by now.
