Does the humble gladius have any place in modern combat? Do swords in general? What's your favorite sword?
>>64298969Maybe a particularly short gladius could serve as a combat dagger much like a particularly long bowie knife. Idk how sturdy and robust gladius' tend to be tho for general non combat purposes
>>64299021Did the Romans use their swords for non-combat purposes, or did they have specialized tools for different jobs?
>>64299032I thought you were asking about modern uses, not how the romans would have used them
>>64298969the Gladius was issued during the Civil War as a weapon for artillery crews. Didn't work out too well when up against bayonets but it looks baller as fuck
>>64299046I was, but now I'm curious about that.>>64299054The LARPing spirit of American military history isn't looked at enough.
>>64298969>What's your favorite swordthe bayonet on my sks
>>64298969>Does the humble gladius have any place in modern combat? Do swords in general?
In the land of the disarmed, the swordsman is King, the owner of a flintlock is an Emperor, the owner of a Glock is a god, and the owner of a plasma ray gun is a Cosmic Entity
>>64298969Realistically, no, they do not. That being said, now that guns have defeated plate armor, one-handed melee weapons have finally overcome two-handed melee weapons.
>>64298969No, but it is the best possible weapon for HD that isn't a gun.>Cue green text of frog who dispatched a l'dindue with a Gladius and got legally trained for it afterwards
Pointless without a huge fuck shield and comrades to your left and right
>>64299054Its a FASCHINENMESSER and it messers faschinen! Swiss had it, french had it, prussians had it for their pioneer troops
Probably the best Brits can do right now. Until they start taking police stations
>>64299061I think it was pretty cool when the US military tried to wewuz Romans n shieeeet as part of the classical republic larp right after the Revolution. We should go back to being Legionaires.
>>64299852>and it messers faschinen! It knives faggots, actually. You're welcome.
>>64298969No.No.Glad I could clear this matter up for you, OP.
Oakeshott XVI supremacy
>>64300422not helpful at all
>>64298969Could work in home defense possibly in some other niche cases when paired with a bullet proof shield, but I don't think that would ever become some kind of standard.
>>64298969That's a spatha though
>>64299061French* larping as that is a copy of a french swprd popular in the confeseracy.
>>64298969The best argument I've heard for gladius is that it's slightly shorter than arm's length so you can reach behind yourself to stab someone right in front of you.
>>64299032>Did the Romans use their swords for non-combat purposes, or did they have specialized tools for different jobs?Ancient soldiers are still soldiers and thus would use whatever tool is at hand to get whatever job is done. But legionaries were issued with proper tools like axes, pickaxes, hatchets, etc., which were obviously more suitable for tasks like building an encampment or digging trenches.
>>64299061Didn't they just copy the Frogs? I thought they were the first to bring back the gladius for artillerymen in 1816?
>>64302367I would say that LARPing as a LARPer is the ultimate LARP (like dorks who dress up like JSOC psychos)
