Ports are lame and gay outside of integral suppressors. Comps are good but they can take tuning to get right sometimes and may eat into a handguns margin of reliability.

Depends entirely on the application. It absolutely can help with controlling muzzle rise, the question is: is that a problem that needs fixing for you? For a full-size 9mm they're kinda pointless except in the context of a race gun. A compact .44 magnum? That's a fuck of a lot more controllable with porting than without.

you can get barrels that stick out the slide and have porting in them, which is a way better solution because then you don't have to unscrew the comp to take the barrel out of the slide. usually looks worse than having a comp on but not always. I know that the guy who posts anime feet and owns like 11 berettas has a couple that look nice with the extended ported barrel. I don't have an example image on hand but maybe he'll come post one of them
