"Residents of the town of Solhan, eastern Burkina Faso, held a protest today, with signs reading "Solhan is hungry", "Resupply Solhan within 24 hours", the town has a military base, which is besieged in the south by JNIM and north by IS-Sahel"

2 days later

"Several families in Sebba and Solhan decided to join the JNIM militants following protests 2 days ago demanding the government to resupply the town with food, the local residents were reportedly provided with food and medicine from JNIM."

the government is literally braindead, the VDP militias along with mercs just fuck around and persecute minorities, who end up joining JNIM, also burkina faso and the shithole sahel states were funded with USAID (yes, even after the coups)

>Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, three nations in West Africa run by military governments after coups in recent years, have announced their exit from the International Criminal Court (ICC), referring to it as “neocolonial repression” and accusing the judicial body of selective justice.

>In a joint statement on Monday night, the three countries said the ICC had become incapable of prosecuting war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression and genocide without elaborating.

>“[The ICC is an] instrument of neocolonial repression in the hands of imperialism,” the joint statement read, adding that the countries were seeking more “sovereignty”.

JNIM seems far more pragmatic than the local ISIS branch. I guess that's part of the reason ISIS got so big in the first place because they want a caliphate ASAP but just massacring your way through villages makes a lot of enemies.
>>
>>64303109
isis in the region (also in the congo) is also much more pragmatic than in syria, trying to establish jizya on non-muslims (with regular beheadings if they reject), but they are still much more extreme than JNIM (for example kidnapping kids to indoctrinate them) and regularly fight with them

altho, the west nigerian IS offshoot (not to be confused with the one in eastern nigeria) just razes villages and kidnaps foreigners for money to stay afloat
>>
>>64303104
Poaching is so rife and poachers so heavily armed in Africa, park rangers are basically SF

>>64303116
ISCAP (Congo ISIS) used to be like that but at this point they're basically a roaming TND squad in the jungle who occasioanlyl behead dozens of people. I'm not even sure what they think theyre accomplishing because the region is like 5% Christian. The Nigerian branch in the northeast is by far the most "succesful" and least violent to civilians because the army has basically let them keep their little statelet for some reason

I've recently revised my assumption that Russia was deliberately protecting ISIS within the regions of Syria they controlled and now think ISIS was able to persist in those regions simply because the Russians were incapable of stamping them out
A lot of people (including me to some extent) seem to have looked at the wests forever wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and concluded that COIN is easy when if fact the west was (as usual) the very best in the world at what they were doing and simply made it look easy as a result
The truth, it seems, is that good COIN is actually really difficult to pull off, especially if the guys running the insurgency have (or are affiliated with guys that have) decades of experience surviving the most effective COIN effort history has yet seen

That's the weird thing about these African wars. A rebel group just takes a region and the government is just "ahh whatever stay over there". How did you manage to conclude COIN is easy if the West had forever wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Shouldn't it be the opposite?
>>
>>64305477
The West demonstrated keeping insurgents down is easy in the modern day. Guerillas were target practice in the forever wars. It was a refutation of the narrative guerillas could fight off any conventional army which didn't go full genocide mode.
China did the same with the Uighurs. Guerilla warfare is a lot weaker against nation-states than it was in the age of Maoist insurgencies.
>>
>>64305477
NTA but I'm guessing he means that Western militaries racked up insane kill rates and indeed managed to clear out insurgents when they stood in the open (though not when they're dispersed/covert) so the assumption was that Russia could do the same.

That's an interesting point. I think another thing is that you need a lot of dudes. People think of special forces but the Surge happened because the U.S. military deduced that you need to dump a lot of troops into a city and hold it for awhile to make any progress. The U.S. military had a theory that you need a 20 troops at minimum for every 1,000 civilians. Or 25.

Too poor and corrupt to maintain an army large enough to protect the entire country, so the military presence is mostly concentrated in just a couple big cities/towns. So they didn't actually lose it, more like the vacuum left by the lack of government authority gets filled by these groups. This kind of thing is a problem in most of Africa.

I suspect the anti-Western pose by these juntas might not last because the situation is so serious and the Russians don't seem to be doing a good job either. Or they might remain anti-French but throw in with America. National Guard but it caught my attention.
