That led to a major total overhaul program where they refurbished each viable airframe (as part of the Lancer program), which reduced accident rate, but it still remained high. When talking about its combat record we're talking about a plane built in vast numbers and widely exported, and participating in many battles over decades. MIG-21s saw combat as late as 2019. So a lot of its combat record is against much more modern aircraft. And even if its k:d isn't great, still got kills even in the modern era against more advanced planes, including an F-16. It was a good plane. It's jsut too old now.
