>According to official figures, between 1966 and 1980, India procured 872 MiG aircraft of various models.

>Between 1971‑72 and April 2012, 482 MiG crashes were recorded, claiming 171 pilots, 39 civilians, eight service personnel and one aircrew, "caused by both human error and technical defects". There is no official update of the data since.

What the absolute fuck

The MiG-21 was the soviet Starfighter, a PoS even if the engine was excellent.

I hate Russians as much as the next guy but my gut feeling is telling me Indian retardation had a lot more to do with those failures than mechanical issues or flaws.

Look, man, I understand your desire to shit on Russian planes, but let's be honest. It's India; they will crash any plane design from any country. If we gave them F-15s, they'd crash them too.

I'm pretty sure it's worse the the F-104. It's notoriously crash-prone. The Romanians lost something like 25% of their inventory in the 90s. That led to a major total overhaul program where they refurbished each viable airframe (as part of the Lancer program), which reduced accident rate, but it still remained high. It's just a compromised design, like all 3rd gens.

lol I remember listening to some podcast by a former US Navy pilot, they had some head honcho Indian Airforce pilot on and when asked about the MiG-21s incident rate he got very defensive
>Saarrrr that is not true Mig21 is most safest airplane saaarr

Under Modi, Indian politics have taken a hard right turn, leading to increasing baseless nationalism alongside violent action against segments of society labeled "other". Combined with an already large population gaining greater access to the internet, this annoying self-aggrandizing attitude has naturally leaked over in some volume or other to the wider internet. People on-line have unsurprisingly reacted to this development with frustration, leading them to seek out flaws and failures of a society they previously paid little mind to. Or that is how I see it.
Pic not related.

Look, man, I understand your desire to shit on Indians, but let's be honest. It's russian; they will shit over maintainability of any plane design in any country that buys them. If we gave themF-15s, they would find a way to make them into mig-21s too.

Does this remind you of a certain snowgerian nation that is only good for exporting natural resources ?

As much as I love shitting on the Soviets I gotta say, India having an average IQ of 80 and half the airframes being made in India probably is the reason for most of them on top of the Mig-21 itself being notoriously difficult to fly. In Warsaw Pact service the plane was still accident prone but not nearly as much, it was honestly typical of jets of that era

This is basically nothing compared to the numerous smoooking accidents the russians have been experiencing recently. And no I dont mean the Ukrainian caused ones.
Puccia loterally sank a floating dry dock. Twice.

MIG-21 was a good plane. It's just old. The prototypre flew in 1955 and the plane entered service in 1959. A plane literally from the 50s. When talking about its combat record we're talking about a plane built in vast numbers and widely exported, and participating in many battles over decades. MIG-21s saw combat as late as 2019. So a lot of its combat record is against much more modern aircraft. And even if its k:d isn't great, still got kills even in the modern era against more advanced planes, including an F-16. It was a good plane. It's jsut too old now.

The F-16 has only ever been shot down by a French aircraft. (Greek Mirage shot down a 2 seat Viper)

I mean we're talking about India here. They managed to lose rafales against chinkshit due to incompetence
>>
>>64306736

It honestly sounds to me like the Indians are just flying this planes until they literally fall apart mid-air rather than retiring/cannibalizing them. Plenty of other air forces have operated MiG-21s with failure rates nowhere near that.

It's both
East Germany lost 39 of the 121 first gen Mi-21's in crashes, Poland around 90 from 550 over the whole 40 years, sometimes 7 in a year with the bulk also happening at the beginning
Seems like India never bothered to improve the pilot training and the service of those shitboxes over the decades of using them
>shitbox it may be, it's still one of the sexiest soviet planes

>>64309950
Much like every other Indo-Pak war the details are murky at best. There was, however, a confirmed Jeet Mig-21 pilot that got shot down because he was captured and the wreckage was found.
>>
>>64309950
Imagine believing what either side says that isn't confirmed by osint or third parties. Unless you're a jeet.

Yeah the MiG-21 is a very accident prone aircraft, but the street-shitters certainly increased the accident rate well above what is normal.
