Every Mossberg Nightstick I see online has this really nice deep dark lacquered wood finish and mine looks all orange and plain-walnut. Almost barely lacquered at all. It's meant to be a gift. Picrel is what I'm getting after the waiting period is over. I looked it up and apparently the differences in wooden furniture finish can simply depend on the batch and essentially, luck. Just how cucked am I?

They always make things look more appealing online than they appear in real life.
Sucks, but it's true.

>Natural products, such as wood, vary greatly in color and finish.
>This is especially true on cheap, low-end guns
Truly shocking.

It sounds like your father failed to teach you basic man shit. Call him up and ask him why. I'm curious to know. Anyway, it's easily fixed: Take the furniture off. Sand off any finish that's on top of the wood. Stain it whatever color you like. Apply new finish. If that sounds scary, it's not. There are plenty of resources on YT.

Protip: You should always expect crappy wood on a gun unless you specifically spend a LOT of money to address the problem. Nice stock blanks--just the piece of wood that the stock is cut from--cost a few hundred dollars AND UP. The stock itself is even more expensive once it's cut and finished. Nobody is putting nice wood on a gun unless you're talking $2k and up price point.

Wood varies in color and changes color with age. Also only the nice examples usually survive with time so it creates a bias towards the stock made on old growth with 50 years of oiling being the expectation and not the exception. You can get a darker richer look on your current wood with time.

Sure, they're going to go look at the rack, pick the best looking gun out of the dozens that are there, and then photograph that one. Then, the computer goons in the marketing department are going to shoop the fuck out of the picture to make it look as nice as possible.

Honestly if he doesn't have woodworking experience he's better off taking it to a professional than risking fucking it up on his own.

Sure, that's an option, probably expensive though. This isn't a hard beginner project, and if he screws it up it's no big deal as replacement furniture is cheap and readily available. Plus the gift will be a lot more personal if he put care into it.

Shouldn't be that expensive to have it sanded down, stained and lacquered. It's not a large piece of furniture or anything and he doesn't want custom engraving or carving.
I mean, it's a good DIY project if he wants to try it but being a gift you want it to come out well. If I bought it for myself then I'd be more inclined to do the work myself.
