Hi /k/Can you give a retard like me a comprehensive guide on how to read the bore of a gun? >how to tell if it is chrome_lined versus any other choice>how to tell if the rifling is worn to the point of haggling the price>etc. All I know right now is that I dont know anything. I suck at googling, but we might get a fun convo going :)

>>64308736It's kinda hard to teach this beyond the obvious, you really just have to look at enough pictures of bores until you start to recognize problems.Obvious shit: Rust, scratches, pitting is bad.Less-obvious shit: Rifling usually has crisp, clean, edges. Look for angular lines and sharp corners. Deviations from this indicate wear. That said this is not always true, and where historical familiarity with the gun matters. For example, a lot of muzzleloaders powder guns had rifling cut with semi-circular grooves, so that kind of curved shape is not a flaw. Learn the different types of rifling, know which one a given gun should have, and then you will know what to look for.Barrel bulges often show as "rings" in a barrel. If you shine a bore light down the barrel and you see a ring-shaped shadow that is a bad sign and means the barrel was bulged from a bore obstruction. You can often confirm by feeling the outside of the barrel.Get a bore light and examine as many guns as you can, especially ones you know to be brand new and ones that you know to be old and used a lot. The more bores you examine the more you will start to notice potential issues.
>>64308893you can also take a cartridge that matches the gun and stick it bullet first into the bore end. If it drops all the way to the brass the barrel is shot out and worn.
