This something western manufacturers were toying with at the time, Europeans on experimental prototype level and 'murricans at full blown development scale. Basically everyone ran into shitshow fundamentally unsolved issues and decided to dabble with major issues one at the time on experimental scale for next 20 to 30 years. Indians really thought that they could develop the most advanced aircraft engine with 50 million dollars, while western manufacturers expected to spend like 10 billion to develop one.
