For example, a shitty ruler wouldn't be able to talk a local governor into allowing his cities citizens to fight, but a good ruler would have little trouble. At the end of the day, the real way to win wars back then was primarily with numbers (the tech was simple regardless) and money, not necessarily strategy.

Hence it was an either/or for him: unconditional surrender of the enemy, or fight until the death. He also categorically refused making any territorial concessions, it being his divine patrimony given to him by his father, Charles XI. This messiah complex is also why he spent years fucking around in Poland trying to dethrone their king because Charles deemed him to be a perfidious and godless man. At the very least, he shouldn't faff aoround in the absolute clusterfuck that is Polish-Lithuanian politics to begin with. Augustus was an untrustworthy dude, no doubt about that, but playing whack-a-mole in Poland for years on end only lets the Russians conscript more serfs and learn from their mistakes. And they have an endless tide of pidors to conscript, Sweden does not. One lost battle and it is ogre. Also, don't trust the Turks.
