whats up bros

This thread is about the appreciation of knives and their design, their history, and the engineering and materials that are required to make a functioning blade.

"I want a knife recommendation."
Answer the following:
>larping or folding
>Intended HARD USE larp?
>Blade width in the z dimension?
>Local warlords?
>Price floor?
>Nobody will pull you over if your tags are expired as long as you drive okay. Just play dumb. You wont even get a ticket. Use the money you save on car registration to buy more knives.

A new question set is written, and I must obey...
>larping or folding
Both
>Intended HARD USE larp?
Mostly scare women with it and show it off to people at work if I need to cut boxes. Having a cool knife is kind of like being jacked, other men will come up to you and ask to see.
>Blade width in the z dimension?
Yes
>Local warlords?
They got sent back to Guademala.
>Price floor?
$119 retail, past that are generally good designs and high-quality steel types.
>Nobody will pull you over if your tags are expired as long as you drive okay. Just play dumb. You wont even get a ticket. Use the money you save on car registration to buy more knives.
Yes, hello? J. P. Chase Stanley bank of the Bahamas? Yes, I'd like to take out a mortgage on a house I don't own in order to buy more knives. No, I cannot wait, there's a new $400 plastic Benchmade that just came out, and this time they used more plastic!

hello I'm deploying to antarctica for a season, I need a nice non-threatening useful knife or multitool to bring along? something that won't get me in trouble in the New Zealand leg of the trip down there as well. I'll be in a lab so I'll be opening boxes, cutting zip ties, crimping wires, other lab related activities. Sometimes outdoors with heavy winter gloves on.
Thanks guys, I'm new to knoifes in general.

Outside of bushcraft this little Gerber EAB fucker gets the most use outside of my collection for some reason. It's just a tiny square folded and as long as you use quality utility blades it'll last a lifetime. If you put some grip tape on one end it makes it easier to open one handed.

I suggest the Stanley 10-099. The new ones seem ok, I have an older one from the 90s and it's held up well.
I like that I can store like 15 spare blades in the body, and each blade has two ends on it, so you really have 30 blade changes available to you.
Additionally, it's clearly a utility knife and is available from various suppliers like Acklands-Grainger, so it's easy to explain as necessary for work if some sperg liberal scientist starts asking "WhY dO yOu HaVe A kNiFe?!" after they said "Does anyone have something that can cut this packing strap?" And you say "Yes, I have this knife".

So you're saying he won't need a can opener because there are no cans, except for the cans of food that the cooks use. Cans of food that would likely be on the same transport as him if there happened to be an accident, or in the same building as him if there was an accident that killed all the cooks?

the folding handle on the gerber is not good, but its enough to hold onto. The flip side is you are probably not cutting anything more aggressive than a cardboard box or two so the ergonomics of it doesnt matter very much. If you have a specific task you need a real cutting tool for go get the right tool for the job

>>
>>64324076
I don’t get it either. Can opener is the most important part of a multitool. Second is bottle opener because I like beer.
>>
>>64321662
Demko's Freereign doesn't have an exposed tang and comes in nonthreatening colors. IMO the AUS10 base model is overpriced but you can get much better steels for not much more money. That would be about half of your $400 budget, you could drop another $100 on a Leatherman or other multitool then get some Milwaukee beaters, maybe have a backup and also 1 or 2 to hand out to people who really wish they'd brought a pocket knife. I got one of the hawkbills a few years ago just to try it out and it became one of my favorite knives but also the only one I lend out because it was just $15. The first time I lent it out the dumbass using it broke the tip and I wasn't even mad, I just reground it when I got home. They're gravity knives so they're great for using with gloves but I guess customs or whoever might be gay about them.

Is the milspec KA-BAR still the best fighting knife in today's day and age?
>>
>>64324345
Arguably the best would be some bespoke bullshit and even if you wanted to restrict it to "the best mass produced fighting knife" there would be heavy competition however I do think the USN Mk2 has held up very well. Kabar in particular has modernized quite well, their rubber handles are goddamn amazing. I think they've gotten a little crazy with their pricing but their sheaths kick the shit out of most competitors and I feel like that doesn't come up as often as it should.

Kabar is just the manufacturer.
Circa WW2 militaries realized that they could look to what knives their own people were already using and then just adopt that knife and everyone would know how to use it. In Britain this led to the FS. In the US this led to the USN Mk2, now generally known as the Kabar. Kabar wasn't the first manufacturer of this pattern, but they got a shitload of knives out relatively early so their kname stuck.

Once upon a time there was an autist in these threads who would stab punching bags wrapped in t-shirts with ever kind of blade he could get his hands on. He said straight backs and dagger/spear points were far better than anything else.
>>
>>64325498
What we need is a garberg with a longer blade and a guard and flush pommel so you can push on the back according to the wisdom of James Williams.
SRKs rattle if you throw them at a tree for a while.

>batoning argument
I should've known
The Ka-Bar is for dispatching the enemies of freedom worldwide and doing stuff a pocket knife would do. They chose it because WWI trench knives weren't good at utility tasks. There are compromises everywhere with knives, it was a knife they could mass produce for the soldiers.
>>
I don't like the upswept point on the Ka-Bar.
>>
>>64325728
That's fine.
It's not upswept like an Arabic sword. The point is closer to the middle of the blade than if it was straight backed.

>durability tests
You mean batoning tests. Which will never ever happen in a combat scenario.

Here's a guy chopping and thrusting a bog-standard ka-bar into everything you can possibly think of. The knife survives fine dozens of doing full force chops and thrusts into wood, metal, and concrete. It only breaks when the guy purposely does retard stuff to break it.

>>
>>64325711
I'd rather carry something like a Green River hunting knife with a handguard.
>>
>>64325777
>Sounds like the trench knives were better COMBAT knives while the KA-BAR was a better utility knife
yeah, but the soldiers whined they couldn't open their MREs or whatever they had with it
They probably just wanted one knife and traded their other ones for cigarettes or something
>>64325777
>show us testing that proves the KA-BAR is so good at combat that it's worth ignoring durability tests where other knives, while being more durable, would not be able to be utilized effectively in combat situations
I have a kabar and a garberg and would rather have the kabar for fighting, the garberg for camping type stuff
there are better knives. The KaBar is good enough. Mine was $105 when I got it.

You said the tang would snap if you accidentally swung/thrust into a wall or otherwise hit something solid. You have video evidence of a guy intentionally swinging and thrusting a ka-bar into something solid dozens of times and the knife is fine.

JoeX abused his hard and it took way more than I thought it would.
It has a guard and a leather handle which is nice. I prefer a fencing grip to the hammer grip though. My most ergonomic knife is my Military 2, but it isn't perfect either. Garberg is good but no guard.

>>
>>64325977
No, the KaBar is like a little sword, the FS is like a dagger. It's unfortunate they don't even make them with sharp edges anymore the way fairbairn told them to. The old ones look like the 11 degree or so grind of the blade goes right to the edge, which would be easy to sharpen. The ones they sell now have a 90 degree inclusive angle on the edge, so are just good for stabbing.
>>
>>64325994
That's not an explanation, retard-kun. All you did was restate what you already said.
>>
>>64325982
Uh, what have we been talking about then? You've been complaining about the weaknesses of the kabar, ie saying fighting knives shouldn't be designed that way.
There are different designs, I guess it amounts to personal beliefs and style and ergonomics and philosophy of use. Look at Michael Janich with the Yojimbo. He has some good points which can be met with counterpoints, but his points and philosophy of use are effective for what they are. It just not my cup of tea, but it works for him and people who agree.

The tanto is useful if you find yourself needing to puncture things frequently, such as at my job. I've been abusing the hell out of an Emerson CQC7 for years now for jobs that would have bent/broken the tips off of pretty much any other pocket knife I have ever owned. However if that is not something you need from your knife just about anything is objectively better for everyday tasks.

I wasn't the one making that point, retard. Not everyone is the same person here.
It's a fucking knife with a sharp edge and acute enough point. It's perfectly suitable as a general purpose or combat knife, especially given that it was in service after soldiers started carrying rifles and pistols with more than half a dozen rounds in a magazine.
Ka-bars are fine. A couple of videos of people breaking them by doing retarded things doesn't prove that they're shit knives.

Plus those disposables have absolute shit edges. the disposable edge knives only make sense if you are using a knife so constantly it dulls half way through your day, or you constantly get concrete slop all over your knife. for all other tasks (especially edc), a regular knife sharpened once a month probably has a better edge and is more economical. we have modern super steels now that legitimately do not dull quickly.
