hello I'm deploying to antarctica for a season, I need a nice non-threatening useful knife or multitool to bring along? something that won't get me in trouble in the New Zealand leg of the trip down there as well. I'll be in a lab so I'll be opening boxes, cutting zip ties, crimping wires, other lab related activities. Sometimes outdoors with heavy winter gloves on.Thanks guys, I'm new to knoifes in general.

Outside of bushcraft this little Gerber EAB fucker gets the most use outside of my collection for some reason. It's just a tiny square folded and as long as you use quality utility blades it'll last a lifetime. If you put some grip tape on one end it makes it easier to open one handed. https://youtu.be/711IWHCljVk?si=lMGOcBus7BRuREsP
>>64322030>gee bill your mom lets you have two bottle openers?one of them opens cans.>>64322287>metal handle knife in subzero temps that can only be opened by nailnickYeah I didn't really think that part through. Maybe a Spyderco UKPK or Dragonfly 2? Some models come in H2 in order to stand up to salty, corrosive environments.
>>64322049No. Don't give anti-gun companies money anon
Sorry for the bad quality photo, ill lighted room.
>>64322668I dont post in knife threads because I dont actually buy or use knives because I have your picrel and it does 90% of the things I need a knife to do. For the rest there are hammers and screwdrivers.

>>64322652>>64323014there are no cans in antarctica, unfortunately well I guess there are some if you're working in the mess as a cook

>>64323332Yeah for me the tiny thin triangle shape is why I always have it with me, just clip it on a wallet and forget about it until you actually have a use for a blade.>>64323452Kind of defeats the purpose with a longer handle but there is the screwpop and similar knives with adjustable blade length.
>>64323856what's wrong with wanting a longer handle, I don't get it
>>64323452I suggest the Stanley 10-099. The new ones seem ok, I have an older one from the 90s and it's held up well.I like that I can store like 15 spare blades in the body, and each blade has two ends on it, so you really have 30 blade changes available to you.Additionally, it's clearly a utility knife and is available from various suppliers like Acklands-Grainger, so it's easy to explain as necessary for work if some sperg liberal scientist starts asking "WhY dO yOu HaVe A kNiFe?!" after they said "Does anyone have something that can cut this packing strap?" And you say "Yes, I have this knife".
I'm going to get one of these, I like titanium.Exceed Designs TIRANT RAZOR V3
>>64323456>there are no cans in antarctica, unfortunately>well I guess there are someRetard. So you're saying he won't need a can opener because there are no cans, except for the cans of food that the cooks use. >>64323867the folding handle on the gerber is not good, but its enough to hold onto. The flip side is you are probably not cutting anything more aggressive than a cardboard box or two so the ergonomics of it doesnt matter very much. >>64323867The EAB is almost the size of the blade itself for super compact carrying. I use a Fiskars because its grippy for large jobs.

>>64324076I don’t get it either. Can opener is the most important part of a multitool. Second is bottle opener because I like beer.
>>64321662Demko's Freereign doesn't have an exposed tang and comes in nonthreatening colors. IMO the AUS10 base model is overpriced but you can get much better steels for not much more money. That would be about half of your $400 budget, you could drop another $100 on a Leatherman or other multitool then get some Milwaukee beaters, maybe have a backup and also 1 or 2 to hand out to people who really wish they'd brought a pocket knife. I got one of the hawkbills a few years ago just to try it out and it became one of my favorite knives but also the only one I lend out because it was just $15. The first time I lent it out the dumbass using it broke the tip and I wasn't even mad, I just reground it when I got home. They're gravity knives so they're great for using with gloves but I guess customs or whoever might be gay about them.
>>64324204beer is fucking disgusting it's a poison, essentially
Is the milspec KA-BAR still the best fighting knife in today's day and age?
>>64324345Arguably the best would be some bespoke bullshit and even if you wanted to restrict it to "the best mass produced fighting knife" there would be heavy competition however I do think the USN Mk2 has held up very well. Kabar in particular has modernized quite well, their rubber handles are goddamn amazing. I think they've gotten a little crazy with their pricing but their sheaths kick the shit out of most competitors and I feel like that doesn't come up as often as it should.

My rather boring collection.
>>64324677Kabar is just the manufacturer.Circa WW2 militaries realized that they could look to what knives their own people were already using and then just adopt that knife and everyone would know how to use it. In Britain this led to the FS. In the US this led to the USN Mk2, now generally known as the Kabar. Kabar wasn't the first manufacturer of this pattern, but they got a shitload of knives out relatively early so their kname stuck.

They chose it because WWI trench knives weren't good at utility tasks. There are compromises everywhere with knives, it was a knife they could mass produce for the soldiers.
I don't like the upswept point on the Ka-Bar.

>>64325979How, exactly? This should be funny.
>>64325977No, the KaBar is like a little sword, the FS is like a dagger. It's unfortunate they don't even make them with sharp edges anymore the way fairbairn told them to. The old ones look like the 11 degree or so grind of the blade goes right to the edge, which would be easy to sharpen. The ones they sell now have a 90 degree inclusive angle on the edge, so are just good for stabbing.
>>64325994That's not an explanation, retard-kun. All you did was restate what you already said.

There are different designs, I guess it amounts to personal beliefs and style and ergonomics and philosophy of use. Look at Michael Janich with the Yojimbo. He has some good points which can be met with counterpoints, but his points and philosophy of use are effective for what they are. >>64326198Uh oh, Bark Rivers are shit too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC6NV084qlg
>>64326226No, retard. Two videos with the regular old 1095, stick tang Ka-bar.
>>64326229The same reason millions of people have used Ka-Bars through the years without issue?
>>64326237>this one that broke means all the other ones, including the ones that didn't break, are shitPlease see>>64326217inb4>b-b-but mine didn'tThat doesn't count, right? One broke, all are shit.
>>64326239So we've gone from you demanding proof of people killing with it to deem it a combat knife to >well, I'm guessing they just didn't use theirsFucking kek.
>>64326253>he still thinks one breaking in a video means they all breakThen, by your own reasoning, all knife models that ever exhibit a failure are bad.>>the two that brokeOne, from any sort of remotely reasonable use. Just like one of the Bark Rivers. Both in the same new steel. Interesting. This must mean Magnacut is shit!
>>64326259>you must show data to prove your point to me!>my one or two anecdotal examples are all the proof I need!
>>64326259>show me data about who actually EDCs a KA-BAR and what they do with it.soldiers: fighting, utilityalthough it's been 80 years and better knives are available, some marines swear by it, carried it the whole time, etc.
>>64326275I have watched the whole video, nigger. I was mocking how stupid your fucking argument is, you utter fucking mongoloid.
>>64326278I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I'm pointing out what a moron you are and why your arguments are horseshit.
>>64326289And you completely missed my point, despite me explicitly stating it for you.
>>64326289just come right out and say itquit being all mystical
>>64326297You really are pretty dim. Sorry I don't care about your heckin debaterino, midwit.
>>64326302Jeezus fuck you're dense.
>>64326306Where's your data, nigger? One or two videos isn't data.
>>64326309Stop posting your retarded garbage in this thread then.>So stop responding to me then?Go back to plebbit too, while you're at it.
>>64326312>n-n-no uThe fact that you're harping on about the specific fucking Bark River models shows you completely missed the point.
>>64326316>one video is dataAHAHAHAHA
>>64326319Again, missing my point.
>>64326322I wasn't even talking about that you stupid fucking niggerfaggot.I was making a joke about the two knives that broke sharing the same steel being proof that the steel is shit as a mockery of you saying a fucking video of one knife breaking is proof that they're all shit.Holy hell, I can't believe I needed to actually spell that the fuck out for you.
>>64326325How about you just fuck off instead?
>>64326325Take your gay debating 101 shit back to plebbit, like I said.
>>64326331>then you should already know you've lost the debate.Fucking kek, there it is. It's some fucking midwit who thinks he's a masterdebater.
>>64326334I said I don't care about your gay "debate" shit, you illiterate monkey.
>>64326340>starts his HECKIN DEBATE BRO with fucking anecdotal evidenceD-K at work again
>>64319431Cool knife, anon.

>>64324215Found the muslim.I'm glad you retards have to pray to your pedo prophet 6 times a day, keeps you from using that time productively and joining the rest of us in this century.
>>64324720>not even a single wear markwhy do you have knives if you're never going to use them?
>>64325513>sudokuIt's spelled sapporo you idiot
>>64327123I just want to wear a sarong, does that count?
>>64327158Cold Steel has you covered.
>>64327176Some kinda ultraninja shit right there.
People give Cold Steel all kinds of shit, but I carried my Espada XL during the Floyd riots. No guns at work and would be very hard to hide one.
>>64319431should iget the midway exclusive coldsteel srk
>>643274273v? If so check out the Architect 4.5 in 3v. Go through the builder and you can set it up how you want it. Made by White River. >>64325534I'll check that out, thanks. Reminds me a bit of a mora scout on steroids.
Are We Knives fun? Or are they pieces of shit.
>>64324990ur gay
>>64328766They all have a slight chink in assembly.
>>64322668This is all I need but I enjoy knives and the related sharpening autism so I use and carry those instead. I'm not sorry.
>>64328790Plus those disposables have absolute shit edges. the disposable edge knives only make sense if you are using a knife so constantly it dulls half way through your day, or you constantly get concrete slop all over your knife. for all other tasks (especially edc), a regular knife sharpened once a month probably has a better edge and is more economical. we have modern super steels now that legitimately do not dull quickly. inb4>not my muh jap steel import razorblades i buy specifically hurdurrstill busted out on a belt grinder
>>64327121Rotating multiple high wear resistant knives (like in 15v or k390) can result in years of regular use with minimal discernable wear. Such as my frequently pocketed k390 DF2. Tons of use and just has a little patina.

i don't have a collection, i just have this victorinox rangergrip 78. it works for me. one and done
>>64319431Why the fuck does Victorinox always discontinue all their good models (Compact and Manager) and keep all the shitty ones?
>>64333036Idk how victorinox hasnt rolled out any sort of modular customizer yet. they automated all their production already, seems like logical next step.also give me titanium scales for my saks
>>64333001how do you sharpen it
>>64334656idk just strop it on my jeans lmao
>>64335300You'll cut your dick off!
>>64335305its not really getting any use anyway lolfuck i'm lonely
>>64323332For me it's the swisscard scissors, they work like a little knife if you unfold them
>>64333036compact is still available
>>64335530These are actually super good. Swisscards are a bit too brittle to my taste (I have broken the casing of two of them simply by having them in my wallet) but the tools themselves are pretty solid.Even the tiny minimalist pen has been usedful.
Microtech is bringing back the halo single actions
Chicago Knife Works has great prices, but boy are they slow on getting orders shipped. I’m still used to mail order catalog buying, but it sure isn’t Amazon. Also just saw a mid day coyote in the back yard.
>>64338339Only Signature / Marfione specials for now, so base price is gonna be 1-1.5k for the entry model. Hopefully there's enough demand to warrant some regular models closer to the price of the Gen3 UT. Mildly glad and extremely sad I'm not making them.
>>64338588>saw a mid day coyote in the back yardKILL IT, KILL IT!! It's wild, shoot it now!
