VChk-OGPU reported: “Novorossiysk, currently on combat duty in the Mediterranean Sea, is experiencing serious technical problems.

"Nuclear submarine" means a submarine with nuclear propulsion. No one (save for drooling retards) uses the term to refer to submarines armed with nuclear weapons. Obvious deliberate sensationalism by some sniveling journalist.

Is this Kilo being escorted by any surface combatants? Russians usually keep a rescue vessel within arms reach when they send these on transits. But I wouldn't be surprised if the playbook got thrown out with their current disastrous situation and/or fuel shortage.
>>
>>64320157
Are there any nuclear disarmament treaties in force that dictate which vessels can carry nuclear warheads in peacetime?
Or were there such rules in the treaties that have been abandoned?
>>
>>64320178
>No one (save for drooling retards) uses the term to refer to submarines armed with nuclear weapons
actually, "nuclear submarine" used to refer to submarines armed with nuclear weapons, however they were powered, until the rise of the SSN
>Obvious deliberate sensationalism by some sniveling journalist
this is true however

>Russians usually keep a rescue vessel within arms reach when they send these on transits
their submarines typically travel unaccompanied
it's their surface ships which tend to have some kind of tug or auxiliary around

>all the debating if they are live were just people being in denial, it was obvious right away it's over
Yep, or trying to put a hold on things while they tried to figure out how to spin it. But yeah zero chance. Though I guess it was perfectly painless, someone did the math and at that depth the implosion would actually have gone supersonic in speed almost instantly, faster then nerve impulses travel. So they literally never even knew, one second they were being silly retards the next second they were not.
>>

>what the fuck happened with kursk anyways ?
Same as always:
#justrussiathings

>The government report confirmed that Kursk had been sunk by a torpedo explosion caused when high-test peroxide (HTP), a form of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide, leaked from cracks in the torpedo's casing.
>The dummy torpedo was 10 years old and some of its parts had exceeded their service lives. Several sources said that one of the practice torpedoes had been dropped during transport, possibly leading to a crack in the casing, but that the weapon was put aboard the submarine anyway.
>Personnel who had loaded the practice torpedoes the day before the exercise noticed the rubber seals were leaking fuel and notified junior officers of the issue, who took no action because of the exercise's importance to the Russian Navy. Though the leaks on the dummy torpedoes had been detected, the rubber seals were not inspected before the exercise.
>Maintenance records revealed that the 65-76 "Kit" practice torpedo carried by Kursk came from a batch of 10 manufactured in 1990, six of which were rejected due to faulty welding. An investigation revealed that because the torpedoes were not intended to carry warheads, the welds had not been inspected as carefully as welds on torpedoes carrying warheads. When salvage crews recovered the remains of the torpedo and the launch tube, analyses found both bore signs of distortion and heat damage consistent with an explosion near the middle of the torpedo, very close to an essential welded joint.
>>
>>64325789
And a Russian disaster just wouldn't be complete without someone knowingly disabling at least one safety feature
>Kursk was equipped with an emergency rescue buoy on top of compartment seven designed to automatically deploy upon detecting a variety of emergency conditions, including fire or a rapid pressure change. It was intended to float to the surface and send a signal, helping rescuers locate the stricken vessel. Some reports claimed the buoy, after repeatedly malfunctioning, had been welded in place. These reports were confirmed after investigators learned Kursk had been deployed to the Mediterranean during the summer of 1999 to monitor the U.S. fleet responding to the Kosovo War. Russian Navy officers, fearing that the buoy might accidentally deploy and reveal the submarine's position to the U.S. fleet, had ordered the buoy be intentionally disabled. The rescue buoy remained inoperative during the disaster.

Rettungsboje, also Udet-Boje named after ol Ernst
I suspect they were only really feasible in the (RELATIVELY) calmer English Channel, and probably not in the Atlantic. (and probably pointless in the North Sea with an average survival time of 10 minutes)

interestingly the subject of some controversy. the Germans used to send rescue seaplanes to patrol and rescue stranded aircrew from these buoys. most of them were Luftwaffe, of course, hardly any RAF pilots would be in the drink, so there was shall we say a certain vested interest there. the RAF took to shooting down these seaplanes, because the pilots would usually return to combat and during the BOB killing bombers and pilots was the given priority under Dowding and Park.

the Germans protested that this is a warcrime because they were killing rescue craft on a humanitarian mission.
the British pointed out that these seaplanes were not marked with the Red Cross, and they were taking British airmen prisoner and therefore not lawfully protected as medics.

Bongs had the Air-Sea Rescue Float which was basically a ship, could take more people, was easier to climb into and generally better (the German one was incredibly difficult to get into after being in the sea and the method to be rescued was time consuming and difficult if you've, well, been in the sea). However the Bongs abandoned the idea because RAF flotplane rescue runs were quicker and more efficient. So they only built a few.

>the British tendency to doqnplay serious situations
It seems to be a long-running habit.
A great example is from the correspondence of Lt. Hugh Montgomery (12th Regiment of Foot) concerning the 1759 Battle of Minden:
>Now began the most disagreeable march that I ever had in my life
He then goes on to explain how the 12th Foot (as part of a division with eight other batallions) advanced a quarter mile through the range of an 18 pound artillery battery, how he almost got sent flying when a cannonball struck the three men directly to his right and drove their mangled corpses-to-be into him, how his batallion got raked by enfilade hits and entered grapeshot range of the guns, all directly followed by the division fending off a series of charges by pretty much the entire French cavalry force (63 squadrons totalling roughly 7,000 horses), capped off with a number of infantry engagements.
>We actually fought that day not more than 480 private and 27 officers, of the first 302 were killed and wounded, and of the latter 18.
In other words, a casualty rate of two thirds for enlisted and officers alike, totalling roughly one eighth of the entire Prussian coalition's casualties in the battle (matched only by the 20th Foot, the two being on the rightmost side of the division and thus getting the worst of the artillery fire).
