Discussion of Shotguns.

Do shotguns lead to increased lead exposure vs rifles?
>>
>>64320453
The for person getting shot, yes
>>
>>64320453
most lead particles come from the exposed base of the bullet so not really, fmjs still have lead core and underside of the projectile
>>
>>64320554
Most lead exposure is from the primer vapors

How would one of the Mossberg 590 models be for a first shotgun? I like the Mossberg 590A1 9-shot with the M-Lok forend the most so far, but the local gun store recommended getting a lower-end 590, a Magpul stock, and more ammo instead. Others recommended the Mossberg 500 with different barrels and shit to swap between. Ultimately, after a pump shotgun, I want to get a semi-automatic, but that's in the more distant future. I don't know shit about what I'd need to shoot different types of shot and slugs. For now, it would be for fun first and home defense second. Hunting isn't really a factor for now.
Other brands and models are welcome. These are just the two that keep popping up in my research as fitting my wants/needs/how much I want to spend.

First time shotgun owner here.

I just find out that 7+1 for some shells, like 00, is a lie unless you trim the spring...well at least I can fit 7+1 slugs.

That's less of a size of the shot in the shell issue than it is a crimp style creating "longer" 2 3/4" shells.
Some manufacturers 00 is longer than others, even with the same crimp though, so shop/google around and find out which loadings will give you the full capacity.

Been having a problem with a Bobcat going after my chickens lately so unpacked my goofy Turkish bullpup and have it ready by the door when should things get froggy.

What kind of loads are appropriate for medium sized cats? Currently have birdshot/target load as the first in the magazine followed by 4 buckshot.
>>
>>64325661
Why the fuck would you have target load birdshot as the first round anyways? I assume you have that followed by 4x 00 buck which is no doubt overkill. Maybe #4 buck would be better. Also be aware of your backstop, distance, and spread. If you're likely to shoot it off the roof or higher up on the coop, then where the fuck is that 00 buck going, as well?
>>
>>64325661
Take the birshot out
You could get away with F, T maybe even BB, especially if tungsten, but just run the #4 and kill it on the first shot.
>>
>always wanted a spas 12, even if it's a meme gun
>they're far too expensive now, $5-6k on fuddbroker
>local listing crops up, still $4k
It's such a terrible price but I still kind of want it.
>>
>>64323030
The Nova/Supernova would look so much better if they didn't have such ugly forends. Why couldn't they use the ones from the M-series?
>>
>>
Thoughts on 20 gauge? Worth having?
>>
>>64329343
its for manlets and foids
>>
>>64325661
Cats are thin-skinned and don't have big bones or muscles. Any of the larger birdshot sizes (say, BB through F) or smaller buckshot (#4) are ideal.
>>
>>64329362
Does anyone even make BB or F shot ammo?

>>64323230
You type like a jeet and misunderstood basic shotgun knowledge. All 2 3/4" shells are based on FIRED length. Star crimp have more of that length folded up and are therefore shorter unfired. See >>64323575

It's on the higher end of average. If a black magic magnum was an 8/10 for 2-3/4" I'd call these a 7
They cycle semi automatics well and are much more pleasant in those. If you're using a pump gun look for surplus federal low recoil LE 9 pellet with the flight control wad. Low recoil (doesn't cycle semi autos) but very high quality

Federal has a higher velocity version as well but if you're using a pump gun it's a waste.

Gee, I wonder.

If you want to be specific, the Wilson has much higher grade wood and it has old-school good quality high-polish bluing while your Mossberg has a basic matte finish.
>>
>>64329517
>>64329556
well at least I have my answer. I at least want the wooden furniture to look good. A quick sanding and some lacquer should make it look more like picrel
>>
I've been considering my first semi. I've got plenty of pumps already.
The market seems to be trending towards the 1301, and the a300 as a budget option.
Mossberg has the 940 but it looks too goofy.
Benelli is out of my price range.
Anything else I should look at?
>>
>>64330360
>sanding
That polyurethane will clog the fuck out of your sandpaper, trust me. Scraper is ideal but harder to keep the details crisp and the curves right (and the ends not rounded off, like the butt or wrist of the stock where the plate attaches and the stock butts against the receiver). Might want to just use a stripper or acetone and cotton buds. I've been at a real old...kinda shotgun (surplus) removing oil with acetone. I just wish I knew what that shit doesn't soak through. It goes through my nitrile gloves like they're fucking cotton. Great for my health, I'm sure...
>>
>>64325877
Just get an a300, you will be happier.

>>64329343
If you can have fun shooting it, it's worth having(: if you're accurate with it, and quick with it, it'll be more dangerous than most any handgun for home defense.

>>64330697
Just get an a300, you will be happier.
>>
>>64330777
Trips of good advice, I welcome thee. Very grateful then for the fact that my work offers as many silvershield gloves as I want. And if I bring a bottle of my own I could sneak out some acetone.
>>
>>64325877
If you want a SPAS, pay careful attention to the exact configuration. The value varies a lot depending on little details like the barrel length, who imported them,

>>64330829
It depends entirely on why he wants the gun. The a300 is a much better shooter than a SPAS, no question about that, but if he wants a cool looking investment piece it falls flat.
>>
>>64320747
>>64320747
Mossberg is good shit. My first shotgun was a maverick 88 that I absolutely abused and never cleaned, and I’ve stuck with mossberg ever since.
>>
>>64320747
>Mossberg 590
They're good quality, work well, and aren't absurdly priced. These are all good things for a beginner shotgun. That said, they are a one-trick-pony, they're a dedicated combat shotgun with few barrel options. That kinda sucks because shooting clays is the most fun you can have with a shotgun and totally kicks the crap out of shooting static targets. In my opinion the 500 combo model with both the 18.5" and the long barrel is the best option for a new beginner pump and you want something nicer than a Maverick.
>>
its crazy how the 1301 is inflating in price.

I used to own a shokwave style shotgun and it fucking sucked. You try to aim with it and it punches you in the face. You try to hipfire with it and you look cool but can't hit anything. Shotguns should have stocks.

>You type like a jeet and misunderstood basic shotgun knowledge.
Well I'm an ESL and it's my first shotgun, so be kind.

I'm...italian...
>>
>>64325074
It patterns really nice out of an 18" cylinder bore. Plenty of loads that do that as well, but it's good stuff.
>>
>>64335046
Its ok, at least you get cheap nice shotguns
>>
>>64334822
>What about a Beretta 1201FP?
NTA but I appreciate it. Never heard of it before, but I've been looking for an Italian shotgun to go with my 92, and I like the idea of not having to pay 1301 or Benelli prices for one.
>>
>>64335046
NTA but shotgun shell length tends to vary by brand just a little. Some may load 7+1, some may not. IIRC that's something that is mentioned on hunting forums in the US as we have magazine capacity limits when hunting birds, so you "plug" the magazine and reduce the capacity by inserting a wooden dowel inside the spring. While plugs may work fine and limit the capacity for your current ammo, another brand may be a little shorter and allow loading over the limit. Star crimp vs roll crimp also tends to affect how many rounds you can load.

just got my a300 outlander but it said ultima on the shotgun… the fuck?, what should check on it?

500, 590A1, 590, 590S?
>>
>>64338417
>500
Good general-purpose shotgun
>590A1
Combat specific model, you can't get long barrels for it like you would use for hunting or clays.
>590
Older version of the 590A1, same things apply.
>S
Like the 590, but without a stock so it's less useful.

As usual, the answer depends on the details you didn't bother to mention: what do you want to use it for? If you want a fun meme larpstick get the shockwave. If you want to do practical shotgun things get the 500.
>>
>>64338481
I plan on only buying one, so as much practicality as possible. I'm leaning towards the 590S so I can run mini shells.
The 500 comes with two barrels though. The 590A1 is built ridiculously tough and the parkerized finish would hold up a lot better in my humid climate I think.
