It's a PR Issue. If the public sees soldiers in combat, they won't want their children to join the army. No parent wants to imagine their child in combat. Rarely do kids join the army of their own volition, they're pushed into it by teachers, parents, people who have power over them day to day. The uniform is an attempt to raise the social status of soldiers, who otherwise are illiterate, low paid labourers likely to be killed at work. Tommy this, Tommy that, Tommy go away. The army will tell you that this is in the interests of troops and is a kind of advocacy, a social crutch for enlisted personele. I'm a plumber and make 100k, and I'm going to tell you the army is just trying to conceal from the public how poorly paid troops actually are, and how poor army families are. I know, I unfuck their toilets
