Noob here. Just got my first rifle: a Howa 1500 .308 varmint. Have not yet got a scope for it, but considering a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24X50. For 200m target shooting, would this scope allow me to see the holes in the target, or would I need a spotting scope? Also, is this magnification appropriate for 200m?

What varmints require a .308?
>>
>>64322059
its euphemism

Who knows why the Japs called it the varmint. Apparently the Mitsubishi Starion was meant to be called a Stallion, but they fucked that up too.

Varmint is just a gun manufacturer denomination for a heavy barreled rifle with no muzzle device nowadays.

Also hogs, kinda qualify as varmints.

Depends on target and lighting. I have a 24x on 22 and can see impacts at 200m but not if it's too dark or there's too much glare etc. I'd recommend to anyone getting into rifle shooting to plan on getting a spotting scope sooner or later.
>Also, is this magnification appropriate for 200m?
Depends on what you're shooting. I love high power scopes when bench shooting. Not so much any other time. What you need to ask is
>is it too heavy
>is the lower end too high mag for short ranges
etc.

At the club I joined, they only have a 200m bench shooting rifle range. The range is only open from 9am - midday, so it will be full sunlight most days

It will be hard to see at 200m, but the quality of spotting scope you would need to see 30 cal holes at 200 is more than your rifle cost, so it's probably the most economical choice to make do.

tl;dr if I was shooting anything 200m I'd want a spotting scope but for 308 I could probably usually but not always get away without one

Try some different targets. White ones might bloom too much in full light. Good ol builder's paper works well.

Reactive targets help a lot.
That scope is at the lower end of the vortex line. Cheap glass means image will get blurry at higher magnification and distance.

get a better scope, something not made in china. philippines and south korea made are better for budget builds
>>
Get a vortex strike eagle 4-24x50mm. On midwayUSA for 300 shekels. Glass quality is comparable to vortex viper PST.

This is the third time somebody else has posted about the exact same set-up I'm looking to buy this year. Did I just accidentally put together the ultimate meta poor rifle while I was hammered on a cold November night last year?

Howa 1500s are meta for entry level precision shooting. They make pretty decent hunting rifles too.
