Dirt bikes are far more effective. The Taliban proved that in spades.
Bicycles would have been quite convenient on paved roads in urban areas, but on gravel roads, tires would likely wear out quickly. Japanese soldiers in Malaya eventually removed their flat tires and tubes before riding.
