Handheld thermals are great for scanning. While hog hunting, we will use a handheld thermal to scan fields from the truck, run up on them on foot with NODs, and weapon mounted thermals or IR lasers while shooting.

If you are using one hand to hold, you only have one hand free, so consider getting one you can mount to an inexpensive bump helmet so both hands are free. Also if you mount on a helmet you can also attach an much larger battery pack for external power and much longer life. Also, they make dual attachents so you can remove from helmet and quick attach to rifle, keep on helmet and use handgun. Some sellers let you try them out so see functionality and differences.
