My AR is the only gun I've ever regretted buying. Buy a Ruger 10/22 and put a million rounds downrange while thinking about what you actually want to DO with a gun. What you use it for should dictate what you buy.

What state are you in?

I have about 15 ARs the cheapest I got for ~$200 and I can say my favorite is a Daniel Defense one I got for just shy of 2k. I’d highly suggest getting a DD but if you really want something cheap that fires .223/5.56 then just make sure it has a chrome lined barrel, clean it good, and get extra mags.

is a AR a good first gun

Personally I’m a little old school so for rifles I trained my kids on a bolt action 22lr to understand the basics, then a ruger 10/22 for improving accuracy and being more familiar with some automatics before getting to an AR. But if you’re only looking to buy 1 rifle then there’s nothing wrong with just getting an AR15 and calling it a day. I’d suggest a 22lr as a 2nd rifle since the ammo is cheaper.

You should put money towards a GED instead and get a lock on your punctuation and grammar first. That 4473 might be tricky at your current reading level.

Look up 208 gun shop. They have 16" DDM4V7s for $1250 right now which is like $800 below MSRP for a high-end AR. If you just want to mag dump at trash, get a smith and Wesson m&p 15.

Buy a stripped lower and stripped upper and build as you learn. Understanding how your weapon works in-depth and how different parts interact along with how to assemble/disassemble it is invaluable knowledge to have.

Going to hijack this thread a little.
If I were to buy a KelTec Sub2k, what caliber would anyone recommend? I'm wary of 9mil.. I don't want anyone I have to shoot to get back up.

Isn't 10mm the most powerful cartridge they make them in?

Statistically speaking, basically every pistol caliber between .32ACP and 10mm/.357 has similar lethality in real-world gunfights. By all means, I still say get the 10mm because the recoil won't impact you nearly as much in a carbine, but if you're THAT paranoid about "muh stopping power", you should really be looking into bag-sized rifle-caliber guns in .300blk or something.

I've got an AR15 in 6.5 grendel, but i'd like something more portable and concealable until I turn 21 and can get an SBR and/or a handgun.

Take a look at the RDBs too. Very carry able for a 5.56

11.5 is half the barrel length you need for 5.56 to ne effective. If you want a short barrel, get an AK in 7.62x39

Do not build an AR. I had decent gun knowledge and still bent the upper receiver. It's a retarded process to build them, much better to just buy it made so you don't fuck it up. This is not something you should recommend a noguns to do, after buying all the necessary tools it's not even cost effective. You won't get it right until your second or third build, if he just wants one gun the best option is to buy the damn one gun professionally built.

My recommendation to you is get an AR in 5.56 with a 16-20" barrel, or AK in 7.62x39 with 10-16" barrel, or AR in .308 with 16-18" barrel. Whatever you think is cooler. After 15+ years of being autistically into guns, the .308 AR is the most practical. You can pull home defense and long range hunting all in one package. For this I'd specifically recommend the Ruger SFAR because it's a short receiver so saves overall length. Brands for others, it doesn't matter. Don't get hung up on brands. The cheap and expensive shit are pretty much equal performing when it comes to military designs.

Anon, you really REALLY need to include your budget in posts like this. ARs vary wildly in price. Personally I'd start with an AR from Palmetto State Armory. Cheap, they work, and if you fuck something up it's probably going to be relatively easily replaceable unless you trusted Bubba's pissin hot hand loads from the gun show. Learn on a cheap gun, then get a nice one down the road. PSA has a ton of ARs for under $500. If you really feel like it you can get them for insane prices. My LGS is currently taking pre-orders for a civ legal Heckle my Koch M27 IAR with an ACOG, foregrip, and bipod for a hair over $8.1k.

Probably best to start with a typical 16" barrel. Personally I'd go with pic related and a simple red dot of some sort to go with the irons. In PSA's website this one's listed for $499.99 with the rear sight, $489.99 without. You can also check out your local gun stores and see if they've got any good deals running.

>half the barrel length you need for 5.56 to be effective
"Effective" is the wrong word, "optimum" is more appropriate. You certainly won't get the best possible velocity, range, or accuracy out of an 11.5". Thing is for most of us is we're buying it we already know that. It will be significantly better as an HD gun than a 20"+ though. If you're ONLY looking at cartridge performance then why even bother with an intermediate cartridge in the first place when you could just go for a braced PCC and get great performance from the cartridge out of a short gun? Can caliber match with your pistol (which doesn't really apply to OP... yet). In some cases they'll even use the same mags.
>short barrel, get an AK in 7.62x39
Dracos are awesome. Shame the feral scholar population loves it so much. One handing it like a space marine with a bolter is a great incentive to build arm strength and stupidly fun.

10.3" has stopped more people than civilian 16" ownership ever will

Stop this meme of it being ineffective
