Can we get an SPG thread? I've been looking into tanks designs for a project of mine, I was orignally wanting to use the Stug III as reference, but didn't want to be too obvious, so I started looking up others, and found some nice ones, like this Zrinyi, so I want more inspo.Post SPGs, or any other fixed turret tanks.
>>64352412Another design I liked very much for what I wanted to do is the Ho-Ro. Looks bulky and dumb.
>>64352420The Wespe was a solid candidate, but looks too big for what I am going for, still, I think there's plenty to learn from its design
>>64352426The Sexton is another solid candidate, maybe I should take cues from all of these and make something new. In any case, I like how it looks.
>>64352437The archer is probably the one that fits more of my checklist, and I do like it, but much like the Wespe, seems a tad big.It shouldn't matter at the end of the day, it looks very nice.
>>64352412What SPG are you going for?Either way, posting one I just like.
>>64352456I think I'll mix and match some stuff. I need one that can look like you can live inside, but still not being massively huge. The Stug III A is still my base point, but looking at all these different ideas, I may end up doing a Frankenstein. My main hung ups:>Fixed turret>Riveted>Plate/Grate on the sides>Not mandatory, but a short barreled cannon would be preferable.it's all for visuals, I don't care much about effectiveness or any other stats.Pic related, look at this ugly motherfucker.
I NEED to go to Fort Moore some day
>>64352490Sounds like you'd be served well with downscaling and giving a punier gun to a Ferdinand, at least as a base
Stormartillerivagn m/43
Pansarvärnskanonvagn m/43
Semovente M42
Renault B1 Bis. Knock the turret off...
Marder I
Marder-Hotchkiss
Yes, the gun fits perfectly on the chassis, please stop asking about it.
Su-14-2
>>64352556Yeah, I didn't consider downsizing one that's big, but it's a choice.>>64352561Oh, I love this one! Looks small, but compared to the lorry behind, it's decently sized.>>64352584Never seen this one before. I like the dome like shape on top
>>64352690Playstation one Tank right here>>64352606I recall seeing this one, I think, I recognize the shape and the rivets, but in my memory, the gun was on the left side, not centered.>>64352616I like the B1 a lot, I didn't consider removing the turret, that's worth noting.>>64352638Marder is one of my favourites too, but the cannon was too big for me. I guess I could downsize it and see how it goes.Keep posting, I'll try and do something quick with these.
>>64352723>Looks small, but compared to the lorry behind, it's decently sized.Based on the ČKD LT vz. 38 chassis (aka Panzer 38t), so not terribly huge. The lorry is some distance away there.
Su-100, I like the "architectural tower" on the side.
>>64352542This is such a garbage image with how obvious the blooming is all over

>>64352763HDR's one hell of a drug. And of course the only decent resolution I've found of a JAS 39 in four colour splinter camo is HDR'd to Hel and back...
>>64352764What the fuck was wrong with the french causing them to install the entire goddamn howitzer with mount inside this thing? The gun has literally no traverse because the entire mount has to move
>>64352778Given the timeframe I think we can chalk it up to a !learning experience". And they did cough up the FT afterwards. Now as for the "15cm sIG 33 (Sf) auf Pz. Kpfw. I Ausf. B"...

>>64352800I don't get how anyone ever could have gone "yeah 4,5 degrees of horizontal traverse is fine"Under any circumstance for anything ever
Okay, here's a basic side view I threw together. I am not sure it should have side plates, or be like the B1 and have the thread gro around the chassis. I'll do a few more adjustments>>64352813SEX!
>>64352841Also available in zimmerit.

>>64352606
>>64352841Okay, I threw a few more ideas, I think the Frankenstein idea will be the best one, so I'm gonna take these with me and experiment on my own. Thanks for all the pics, I'll post other candidates from now on, keep it /k/>>64352907Not anymore>>64352959I love how this looks, but doesn't seem viable for Yuro's terrain
>>64352959>>64352975Wait, no, I'm retarded, that goes on train tracks. Got it.
How big?Yes
>>64352977Nigga just google it Its a regular but primitive truck
MENACE is gonna have a nice semi-futuristic one.
I didn't think of this, but big ass guns on a sidecar looks good.
>>64353085https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SU-14
>>64352975>His smile and optimism, gone
>>64352755A couple places supposedly still operate these
>>64352412If you have other tanks in the setting, either of your own design or existing ones, take that design and "Stugify" it. It just makes good sense that an SPG be based on a tank chassis if both are being produced. StuG itself was a topless Panzer III, after all
>>64353679I don't wanna give away too much, because right now it's an itch, I may not fully commit to it, but the idea is that the tank is gonna be something like a trophy from a previous war with a neighbouring area/country that gets used to run away from an armed insurrection in the middle of nowhere.I wanted to do a roadtrip story with a tank.Whatever the tank is running away from have armored trucks and horses, so they got better firepower, but not numbers.
Everything needs to evolve to Stug!
>>64352412the US kept the turret and instead opted to put a pack howitzer inside a light tanktheir design for an assault gun being more as a beefed up mortar carrier, though it did do a lot of direct shooting as well, since the M4 sherman was already widespread enough to do direct firewhile technically packing a howitzer, it wasnt technically capable of high-angle fire since it only elevated to 40 degrees, but it was still a lot more elevation than most other motorized guns, so they could still lob shots over obstacles better than most tanks could but still not enough to be a full on mortar
>>64352412A spg woth quad flak anti drone capability 300k dollar chasis with heavy serious armor 20 mph max high survivability aka a land battleship 2 foot armor plate chobaum.upgrade basically 3 to 4 times the eight of the abrahms and just no tureent seem firepower and anti aircraft anti drone auto cannon and quad flak cannons on top
>>64352690Gun, tracks...oh and metal over it. DA
>>64352778>The gun has literally no traverse because the entire mount has to moveI'll have you know the Mle 97 has a full six degrees of traverse, thank you very much!
>>64352974>>64352979Too much armor, not enough gun. 0/10.
>>64352412Woe, Shermgeschuetz be upon ye.
>>64355364Cutie patootie
>>64355134It had 4,5 in war thunderPathetic traverse limits regardless
>>64352412in terms of pure looks for me it's either the Sexton or the Panzer II SIG 33, picrel
>>64356096what's the carbine on the far left?
>>64356099M91 Carcano cavalry carbine with a folding bayonet.

>>64356415they used to be organic to US infantry divisions, but they were replaced by lightweight towed howitzers since the army believed that infantry should be all-infantry it was a pretty unpopular choice, despite the smaller 75mm caliber, it was a lot more mobile and better protected than the towed guns
>>64356460>they were replaced by lightweight towed howitzers since the army believed that infantry should be all-infantryinteresting. when was this?did they decide to concentrate the gun trucks in other divisions?
>>64356449I wish. Although, I guess my idea isn't that far away. Only reason I didn't want to go into detail is because I'm not sure I'll commit to it and don't want to generate expectations, but I'm sure everyone will forget tomorrow. It's basically a series of illustrations telling the story of 6 maids running from a commie insurrection in a tank on their master's orders. It's not a comic, or even a properly narrated story, it's just illustrations that come to mind to show their journey
>>64357645So just do the Red Republic of Caulonia with maids armed with carcanos escaping in a 105 Semovente?
>>64358319LONGONG>>64357719Sure, why not
>>64356663>when was this?the 75mm half-track was issued as a TD to infantry divisions in north africa, since the 6-pdr wasnt available yet and the 37mm was garbage against modern tanksso the 75mm half-track was issued as a stopgap to defeat enemy armor but the troops quickly found it was effective against things other than tanks and it could go where their towed guns couldntbut the army never saw them as more than stopgaps to be replaced by regular towed guns once they were available>did they decide to concentrate the gun trucks in other divisions?removed entirelydivisional AT was disbanded in favor of regimental 6-pdr guns for AT and regimental 105mm light howitzers for fire supportthe TD battalions got the M10, which was a proper armored vehicle, and thus no longer needed gun trucksdivision-level motorized guns were never revested for the rest of the war, with TD battalions and separate tank battalions bothj being corp-level assets assigned to support infantry rather than being divisional asssets
>>64352778>>6435281>>64356064The Saint-Chamond had an electric drive, so it was easier to do precise turning than with other tanks of the era. I mean, it didn't make up for the lack of traverse but it did at least make the problem slightly more manageable.
>>64358319>You've come a long way, baby
>>64352412A great way is to use a STUG but make the gun long and have it rise up like a artillery piece, making it both a battle SPG and a artillery SPG>all in the ammo you pick, son
This was a Sherman
>>64359796Both of those vehicles are based on the Sherman chassis, as a matter of fact. A howitzer and a mortar carrier.
It seems difficult to combine indirect and direct fire capabilities.
open topped turret or armored casemate?how about open topped casemate?
>>64358788right, thanksso what happened to the self-propelled half-track howitzers?I would have thought they were perfect to equip armoured divisions with
>>64360449>so what happened to the self-propelled half-track howitzers?the T30 HMC, armed with a 75mm howitzer, was pulled from duty and eventually given to the french while the M8 HMC was sent in its placethe T19 105mm half-track was used for a bit before they were sent back to the US and revered back to regular M3sthe 75mm TD half-tracks were also supposedly sent back and reverted back to half-tracks, but a few were hanging around italy and the pacific until the end of the war
>>64359871an armoured vehicle optimised for direct fire needs to have a gun that shoots on a very straight trajectory for accuracy which is permitted to have relatively short range since it will be firing directly; and a small, low silhouette and thick armour for survivability as it is threatened by the enemy's own direct fire weapons.in contrast, an armoured vehicle optimised for indirect fire needs to have a gun optimised for HE capacity and long range, which tends to be lower velocity; also in order to fire as many rounds as possible without needing to reload, and to have room to work the gun, a high silhouette and as many shells as possible, and thinner armour is permittedfor me nothing exemplifies this dichotomy more than the AMX-30 F1 howitzer>>64360455ah I see, thanksseems the US didn't see much need for SPHs in WW2
>>64360469>seems the US didn't see much need for SPHs in WW2they had the M4-based M7 priest and M5-based M8 scott for that rolethey generally wanted to keep their units as streamlined as possible, so they chose to scrap their earlier half-track based howitzers entirely and replace them 1:1 the M8 itself would eventually be replaced by the M4 105mm, which had an even bigger gun and used a minimally modified M4 sherman hull with the armor and roof that came with it

Hetzer
>>64361615Return to StuG?>>64361619Or evolve to Hetzer?

I like how this one looks, but it's hilariously small, lmao
Spain had this which I'm still trying to wrap my head around, but the design looks pretty nice
