Battle of culican cartel trucks were wild sneaky with commercial paint, pop out panels and armor but I'm not finding themhttps://konniemoments.com/2019/10/18/mexican-security-forces-forced-to-release-captured-el-chapo-son-and-retreat-after-drug-cartel-engages-police-in-fierce-firefight-on-the-streets-of-their-culiacan-stronghold-following-his-arrest/#prettyPhoto

Sometimes people online give technicals too much of a bad rap. I understand that many of them are quite crude and almost nonsensical, and can reach but a fraction of their hypothetical potential in conventional combat, but... Having a heavy weapon and actually getting it where it's needed, even though you have to finagle with it a bit due to the improvised nature, is always more than not having said weapon at all. I've learned people tend to quickly find ways to adapt to limitations and weaknesses. Well, as well as one can.

>>64367797probably half the "Military vehicles" on the planet are some flavor of technical, in the "truck with a mounted gun an maybe some moderate protection added" when you get down to it. Like the entire unit in generation kill was effectively riding around in technicals. Humvee's were NEVER intended from frontline combat use like that, and using them as a tip of the spear cavalry maneuver force was **insane** by ordinary doctrine. Like, suicidal against anyone who had the balls to simply stand and shoot back.If that airfield they took had ten men who stood their ground and manned the tanks present half that unit would probably have died. But there they were.Like all over the world "Gun truck" is the baseline military unit and vehicles with actual armor and heavy weapon s capable of defeating armor are rare by comparison. They don't have a bad rap, anyone who knows anything respects them for the useful tool they are. Like obviously you'd rather have an APC, but those are expensive and you cannot park a platoon of mech infantry everywhere. Motor Infantry make up the bulk of most armies and within motor infantry units its absolutely obvious that all or most of the trucks should be mounted with guns. Be they 5 ton contracted army trucks or 45 year old pickups with PKs welded to the roll bar.

>>64367739The late-stage hillbilly armor era where the DoD signed an multi-million dollar contract for high-grade steel plate from Sweden but had local units in Iraq cut it up with acetylene torches was even stranger. The whole thing was such a uniquely American phenomenon: we had to do ghetto rigging, but we could make eight-figure purchases out of the petty cash drawer. We're often criminally underprepared, but admirably quick to adapt in emergencies. We take pride in our own version of smekalka (i.e. American ingenuity) but then again, our improvisations are typically orders of magnitude better. And more importantly, we don't stop there. Our temporary solutions ARE temporary. Local improvisations were replaced by proper armor plate cut to standardized templates like in picrel. The bare steel was replaced up-armor kits that got installed at the depot level which were made out of modern materials like ceramics and kevlar which included bulletproof windows. By the first anniversary of the war, 1,636 HMMWVs had already been retrofitted with the factory-made Armor Survivability Kits.*sniff* It makes me proud to be an American.
