How much ammo did a ww2 or cold war fighter need?
>>64356294most planes carried about 300 rounds per gun with usually 4 or 6 gunsso 1800 rounds is about average and can be considered the gold standardthe US considered more rounds per gun to be a better bet, thoughthe F4F increased the number of guns but reduced the rounds per gun, and pilots hated it since the reduced firing time was not perceived to be worth the extra mass of fire
>>64356294Depends on the country since everyone used a different load-out. Americans put loads of .50cal on their planes so they carried a lot of ammo. Soviets by comparisons only put a single 20mm and maybe 1-2 .50cals on their planes. As a result they carried very little ammo. Germans, Brits, Japanese and Italians are somewhere between the two extremes.
>>64356316>the F4F increased the number of guns but reduced the rounds per gun, and pilots hated it since the reduced firing time was not perceived to be worth the extra mass of fireThe extra guns also negatively affected the aircrafts performance.
>>64356294Ever heard of the expression of giving the whole 9 yards. Belts were usually 27 feet or 9 yds long, and for the ammo it would depend on what country was using what.
>>64357043>the whole 9 yardsSTFU
>>64357043if you want to get technical, only the inner pair of guns had close to 9 yards, it was closer to 8.9 yardsthe 4 outer guns only had 6.5 yards of ammo
>>64359191>if you want to get technicalI don't, no one does
russian fighters were famously worthless in armament and would have to be unbelievably skilled aerial gunners to survive in combat very long. You literally ran out of ammo instantly where as german fighters basically carried an entire arsenal on them. FW190s
