I love chore coats because they often have the bigger pockets of milsurp but without the autism label. They pair better with button shirts too.

As long as it isn't super warm to where you're wearing a hoodie or so cold/windy your fingers are going numb you'll be fine. Wind, hard to say. I've certainly used it in the wind before even when it was super cold (east coast). Not ideal for that and I'd prefer my snowboarder's jacket or a heated jacket but it works. I've used heavy (thick) cotton longsleeves over underarmor while wearing an M65 as well, as non-ideal as cotton is. You can also "replace" the liner with something like a Swiss Tech jacket (green "packable puffer") to increase how warm it keeps you and how well it holds up against the wind or steal a down insert from a good but worn out winter jacket. Also for pants, I tend to wear overwhites with some snowboarder pants under them. Much comfier than a lot of alternatives IMO and the overwhites protect my relatively pricey pants. Not the cheapest but you can get good sales end-of-year at local ski shops. October should be pretty ideal for beginning of year sales too.
