How strong is the JSDF? Could they defeat, for example, France in a 1 v 1 war?

If push came to shove, france.

But it's sort of a dumb premise.

France focuses on european defense with some light power projection for the middle east/north africa.

Japan is wholly focused on defense of their islands and has no explicit power projection capabilities.

France would be incapable of taking japan short of nuking it
Japan similarly would be incapable of taking france.

Without nukes involved france would never be able to take japan, and japan would never be able to take france.

Japan makes the world's strongest tanks and planes.

>Could they defeat, for example, France in a 1 v 1 war?
Franace has nuclear SLBMs, fuck no.

I think the point of the question is to compare military strength. Not to make a good tom clancy novel

Yes but my point is they have two totally opposing directions for their military.

Japan just for one example, focuses on lighter vehicles because many of the smaller rural roads/bridges in japan aren't built to carry 50T+ tanks. The Type 10 japan uses is ~40-48 tons and is capable of operating on ~95% of japanese roads/bridges, the Leclerc is ~55-58 tons and would be limited to just ~40-50% of japan's bridges/roads.

Japan also has a constitution that forbids "offensive" weapon systems. Though they've managed to get around this in many ways, they've only just recently started buying long range cruise missiles, and their justification for them not being offensive weapons is that they'll only be used as a counter-strike weapon, or if they can see clear-cut evidence of an imminent attack against japan or its allies.

So a direct comparison makes little to no sense as France is much more trying to be a European non-US weapons alternative (both for domestic independence sake, but also for political/economic reasons) and makes the vast majority of their military hardware without US systems where at all possible. They also want to maintain a power projection capability that is wholly European, in addition to the UK's. Being a nuclear power that doesn't rely on US nukes also means massive R&D and procurement costs for their nuclear forces, something japan avoids by virtue of being under the US umbrella.

No, no one can defeat France in a 1v1, not even France.
>>
>>64357357
They shot down four B-1Bs and an F22 without E-767 support over the home islands after the JMSDF disabled Enterprise and Stennis with a surprise attack in 1994. So pretty strong.
>>
>>64357357
Personnel and budgets are roughly the same, although France uses more of their budget for nukes and their delivery.

~50 F-35s vs 100 Rafales is anyone's guess

On an individual level, the French have a lot more experience across the board.

>Japan just for one example, focuses on lighter vehicles because many of the smaller rural roads/bridges in japan aren't built to carry 50T+ tanks
That really only applies to MBTs. Look at France's VABs, EBRCs, VBMR, VBCI, they're all fairly light. On top of that, they're newer than Japan's armored vehicles.

>~50 F-35s vs 100 Rafales is anyone's guess
For totals its more like
>50 F-35s
>200 F-15s
>100 F-2s
>4 E-767
>20 E-2C/D
>10 misc tankers
vs
>150 Rafale
>23 Mirage 2000C
>4 E-3F
>3 E-2C
>14 misc tankers
But both sides can't just magically have all these assets in each others theater.
If you're gonna compare the 2 then you gotta at minimum include tankers and AEW&C. Either way the naval engagements are the only thing that really decides what happens and the JMSDF easily sweeps the MN. The question of what happens after that.
>France defending
It becomes just an awkward stalemate where the MN is sunk and they don't have the AShM inventory to do anything about the JMSDF sitting off their coasts, but Japan can't really mount a land invasion and can't do a naval blockade so the average frog doesn't see any change besides maybe the occasional Tomahawk trying to hit power stations until they run out. MN subs might be able to do some damage, but it's 5 attack subs against
>Japan defending
MN actively fucked again, but even harder since Japan can muster more assets and utilize their AShM networks. MN subs also fucked even harder before they can do anything with Japan having almost 100 ASW planes and 70+ ASW helicopters along with their SOSUS network. The average nip goes about their lives, but maybe they see more grannies around protesting the war.
>Neutral theater like Vietnam
Basically like Japan defending, but the MN has a little bit more time afloat.

Also I forgot about this stuff
>VABs, EBRCs, VBMR, VBCI, they're all fairly light. On top of that, they're newer than Japan's armored vehicles.
Japan did just adopt a new reconnaissance vehicle and wheeled IFV that are newer than the EBRC and VBCI. There is no true equivalent to the VAB or VBMR in the JSDF. Maybe the Bushmaster PMV for VBMR and AMV XP to the VAB, but thats comparing a 4x4 to a 6x6 and a 4x4 to an 8x8, so not exactly a good one.

France cant do shit in east asia.
Japan has enough threats to worry about mainly from PRC that vastly out numbers them
>>
>>64357357
Japan has the fourth most powerful air force in the world after the USAF, USMC, and USN. They also have a top-5 blue water navy, although that's a little foggier since Russia and China are also up there and it's not clear exactly how ineffective they would be in a war. Japan might realistically be as high as third.

As long as our hypothetical war doesn't include groundslogging and extended occupation, I'd put money on Japan over any country other than the US or China.

Fuck no france would get wretched by japanese navy.
French fleet is a huge joke except for like on nuclear carrier but that thing can be easily taken out by a hypersonic anti ship missile considering french have shit destroyers compared the japanese that have AEGIS DDGs.
>>
>>64363612
>hypersonic anti ship missile
The Japanese don't have hypersonic anti ship missiles.
>>
>>64363457
That reconnaissance vehicle is actually just one version of a family of new vehicles.

As well as the reconnaissance version, there is also going to be a 120mm mortar version and an armored fighting version.

They've also ordered over 100 Finnish 8x8 Patria AMVXP APCs.

They are fielding them early next year. So far we've only seen the land attack war head, but there is an anti-ship warhead too. Either way it prob wouldn't even be needed since Japan has like 3000+ AShMs of various types inventoried including JASSM-ER, JSM, and the upgraded Type 12.

Japs are starting acquisition of hypersonic guided missiles, their FY26 budget document has those as well as hypersonic glide vehicles like >>64363873 (which they've already test-fired in the US) with the former being a hypersonic scramjet cruise missile and the latter a hypersonic glider (HGV).
Basically they are conducting acquisition and development at the same under the notion that even prototypes will do, valuing rapid deployment over perfection, to boost counterstrike capability building for the first time since 1945, laid out in the 2022 Strategic Documents. This kind of acquisition process had never been observed in postwar Japan before 2022 as well, a new phenomenon prompted by Russia and China.

they'd fight over whether manga or bande dessinée is better but just end up adopting each others storytelling devises.

japan and france are now within 100km of each other and they compete for the buried resources in the rift between them

Without US, Japan would need quite some time to retool it's mil industry while France is mostly self sufficient. It would be different if a small part of the US that happen to be able to produce everything Japan depends on survived on a small island that became a protectorate named Walmart
