So, is there going to be any serious attempt at making an A-10 replacement that does the same job it does, but better? F-35 was close but has too small a brrrt and drones are making gunning relevant again.
>>
>>64364471
How big of a gun do you need for drones?
>>
>>64364471
25mm is plenty for drones and APKWS is really the better tool for the job.

>F-35 was close but has too small a brrrt and drones are making gunning relevant again
You don't need a big brrt for drones though

The A-10 was the unwanted stepchild foisted onto the USAF from the Army after the US government banned the Army from operating fixed wing fighters. The USAF doesn't want it and will never replace it once it is deprecated.

No, it's easier to have precision bombing from an F-35

High altitude loitering drones is the fucking future I hope Lockheed sees my post.
>>
>>64364471
Doubt it. Getting close enough for a gun kill is too much of a risk compared to squeezing off a missile for beyond visual range. Plus, missiles have become more reliable, and they're probably cheaper all things considered.

I have a plan to keep the A-10 flying and have been repeating it for years.
>Remove the gun, replace it with an Air to Ground Radar.
>Add an additional fuel tank where the gun's ammo was and armor it.
>Reinforce the wings (again) and wire more pylons to be capable of firing Mavericks and AGM-179s
>All Glass cockpit
>Update the TF34s to CF-34-8Cs. Same diameter, slightly longer, more thrust.
>Add a laser detection system
>Bring back the 20mm gun pods for the autistic need to put a lot of dakka on the ground.
>>
>>64364981
why would you do all of that just to have an inferior F35?
>>
>>64364296
The Warthog is indeed dated, but a weapon having a counter doesn't inherently mean that it's a weapon without use.
You can also shoot down helicopters and Spookies with MANPADS, and you can defeat APCs and IFVs with basic rocket launchers.
>>
>>64365011
What you say is true, but the F-16 is still in production and was what the F-35 was meant to replace directly.
>>
the hate and urgent need to remove the A=10 comes from there are no profits to be made and no bribes to be received anymore so the replacement shilling has been 24/7 for the last 10 years and the MIC simps follow along blindly

>>
>>64364471
Of course not, all the MIC shills and faggots want to have another super-turbo-stealth-loyal-wingman-loitering-drone-munition development along with all the money that entails. Not something which can fly low and fast while spewing hate in the CAS role.

Also with the advent of drone-munitions finally being adopted by most serious militaries they might opt out of this type of CAS completely and just hit enemy armor with top attacks.
>>
>>64364479
For light drones, I'd go for megaton range.

>>
>>64365022
Honest question, when was the last time the US purchased F-16s for themselves? As far as I’m aware, all the recent purchases are foreign buys for countries that can’t/don’t want the F-25.

any situation you can safely use an A-10 in you could safely use an AC-130 or an AH-64 with better accuracy. that being said, both are still incredibly vulnerable on the modern battlefield. we're more likely to get drone attack heli's as a replacement, slimming and armoring the profile to only mount a cannon and hellfires. something powerful enough to completely win a firefight for the troops who it supports, but disposable enough to be used aggressively.

I'm assuming it'll have a lower operational cost? Then again, maybe not. In any case, operational cost is not something the USAF often takes too seriously into their calculations. For thirdies though? I'm sure quite a few countries would be interested in a super warthog for cartel hunting.

That is not what makes it bad for modern doctrine anon.
It's survivability against modern jets and modern SAMs is what makes it potentially bad today.
I say potentially because we've all seen at this point that a fucking Cessna cannot be stopped by the S-400 ""tRiUmF"" the puccians wanked themselves raw about for a decade.
In a real world scenario it should be comfortably dropping bombs on heads from a distance big enough to negate any MANPADS. Over where the infantry and tanks fight while at the same time freeing up high speed resources to handle the jets and SAMS on the forward edge.

But you know everyone in these discussions always focuses on either wanking the gun or hating the thing for what was always a backup capability.
>>
>>64364544
We could just make an updated Skyraider. Instead we chose the crop duster. Imagine a mostly composite fuselage Skyraider with a modern engine and avionics.
>>
>>64364882
It's an American Frogfoot. The lack of the GAU-8 cult would probably make people use and think about it more rationally.
>>
>>64371491
>The lack of the GAU-8 cult
it was designed around the gun too, anon
>A single 30 mm rotary cannon was to be fitted in the belly of the aircraft, with the gun barrels extending under the nose. As the gun was mounted on the aircraft's centerline, the undercarriage nosewheel was offset one foot (0.30 m) to the left. As the GAU-8 Avenger cannon was not ready, both YA-9 prototypes (and the two YA-10s) were fitted with the smaller 20 mm M61 Vulcan instead.
>>
>>64372048
I stand corrected. I think the GAU-8 in an airborne role is something of a mistake.

If they need to lob shells at people then they'll most likely bolt a recoilless autocannon onto a medium sized drone. The systems already exist so it's just a matter of putting them together.
>>
>>64364471
Purpose building fighter jets to fight drones is a braindead idea.
