M14s were an update of the M1 system which was a relatively early self loading rifle design, rather than a full departure to something more modern like the G3 or AR-10 was. The EBR was a kludge to update M14s into DMRs because DMRs were needed and M14s were what they had to work with to accomplish the desired results.It did work, in that it was a practical DMR but it was still a kludge built on a kludge. I don't really like how it looks but desu it's looking like the best option overall.

The bad news is that after you've spent the money for a M1A and the EBR refit, you have a rifle that's just about as good as one that's half the price. The whole EBR thing made sense for the US military when it was introduced, but it only makes sense for a citizen if you're hell bent on an EBR, or just a M14ish clone that doesn't suck and cost is no object. I'd personally make the argument that the best thing about the M14 is how damned sexy it looks, and placing it in the EBR chassis removes that, which leaves you with an expensive, adequate rifle that looks like a fucked asshole. It's not for me but it may be for you. The EBR serves as an example showing that a turd can indeed be polished if you're willing to spend enough money. The US military had that money, and they already had the M14 in inventory and needed a makee-workee DMR yesterday until they could get something better when they spent that money. If that's your use case, the EBR may make sense. If not, it probably doesn't. If you just want a good gun that meets the technical definition of a battle rifle, get an AR-10 and spend the saved money on optics and ammo.
