how do you counter a concealed mortar position? As guerilla infantry without advanced intel how can you determine what direction mortar fire is coming from and from how far away?
Is there any infantry doctrine for how to face a mortar barrage more in depth than just doing your best to run away or get underground?

How do you not get raped by 120mm 81mm and 60mm mortars.

Short range recon drones are like $300, nigga. Literally every army not from Africa will have multiple per squad.

nah random pic advertising a map builder, but based to think of a schizo compound holding off the feds with an improvised mortar pit.

how would things had gone differently if they had a mortar pit blasting through the roof

>>64377949
if who your fighting has the resources for a mortar pit, they'll probably also have the resources for drone jammers and for the sake of the thread lets assume they do. Fiber optics are still an option, but I'd argue that's past the scope of basic guerilla infantry and in addition it'll literally leave a string to your launch position.

I think it would have gone about the same, just faster

ATF would've called the Airforce and dropped a 1000-pound bomb through the roof.

obviously you can hear the impacts and detonations, but is the incoming noise that substantial is it load enough to be heard, while explosions are going off in your direct vicinity?

also regarding the sound, does the sound of the incoming fire, give any indication to what direction it's coming from, any more intel than just it's coming straight down on me.

Mortar have a relatively limited range, you can have an idea of the area where it will be based on where you get engaged, you can send small patrols to the search the area until they hear it firing and then pin point the position.

Mortars also require constant observation to adjust the fires, so if mortars are hitting your position effectively it means someone is around in direct los, neutrali\ing the observers is almost as good as the mortar themselves,

if destroying the observer is not an available option lets say a uav or super secret spy sattelite how could one hide a platoon from observation? For example maybe the PL could call for smoke from field artillery, but if I were the mortar spotter i'd just aim for the smoke.
>>
>>64377941
Anti battery radar goes back a long way. Some of it is really quite good.
>>
>>64378446
No one is realistically using a satellite to adjust mortar fire and UAVs aren't disembodied spirits, they can be detected and destroyed.
>>
>>64378421
It's a perfectly understandable post, what don't you get
>>
Business idea: sacrifice soldiers on the field to use their shades as spirit-based UAVs
>>
>>64378459
in the scenario i'm imagining (it's not at all realistic), it's a platoon of basic infantrymen equipped with small arms and a medium machine gun squad and have access to pretty good field artillery support but that's strictly it. Could medium machine guns down a uav? I could imagine a m240b destroying something flying slow and low, but up high there's no way it could be effective right?

What kind of UAV?
>>
>>64377941
>how do you counter a concealed mortar??
By not getting stuck in a prolonged engagement which allows the mortars to be used as fire support.

The entire purpose of doing irregular warfare is that you are using it to offset either a numeric or material advantage that your adversary has. If you are hoping to engage them conventionally you are going to get slaughtered like ISIS did once it was pinned into towns like Mosul and Raqqa.
>>
>>64377941
Today? FPV drones. Just sit back, drink Redbull and pilot my drone to hit the mortar crew foolish enough to sit still after firing.

the bigger weapon you use, the bigger weapon they use and you can't outgun the feds when they have DoD on call
>>
>>64379956
the fact that they have to escalate up the chain means its harder for them to just manufacture cause from whole cloth, they'll have increased risk of internal scrutiny, they have to deal with you legally

like, VIP bodyguards *do* push cops back when their charge is threatened by them
>>
>>64379970
>just manufacture cause from whole cloth
no, the feds have evolved tactics and laws from having to combat organized crime so when they get aimed at the average citizen it's overkill
>like, VIP bodyguards *do* push cops back when their charge is threatened by them
feds don't have to do that because when they come for you, you are already considered a criminal. 5-0 has to come around and figure you out, feds don't. this is what people dealing with ice are finding out the hard way. the bigger the machine you piss off, the harder the response.
>>
>>64379983
in reality state security services are vastly inferior to any kind of regular fighting force unlike you're suggesting
>>
>>64379991
original poster is talking about something like waco, not organized guerillas in south america. also when shit hits the fan it isn't one agency you deal with, irl you get multiple types of groups working jointly with the ability to request in the natty guard all the way to mainline miltary if requests go high enough above the chain. for example in some regions in the us if there is an ied involved the area might not have a bomb squad the necessary equipment, so you get resources directly from the national guard. i work on "emergency zones" in my day job

These "satellite surprise pics" are much funnier when they accidentally photograph an actual UFO in flight. It started to happen with high altitude ground photography in the 50s.

proofs?

The honest answer to this question is what is called crater analysis. If you can determine the curvature of a shell fragment, that will tell you the range. For that, there are cards that are carried by various people, typically forward observers that know their job. There is a point in the crater which will tell you the direction.

Once you have that information, you can have an air asset, be it fixed Wing aircraft, drone or attack helicopter, follow that azimuth and hopefully catch the mortar team before they displace.

Normally, mortar teams set into place and if they have superiority, say for a defensive position, they will do what is called registration - which is essentially the same thing as zeroing. If you are able to get to a registration site unobserved, you can catch the mortar team by surprise and either capture the position or destroy everything within it using a simple fire mission assuming they don't have any early warning systems. The advantage of doing this, is that you are not using any electric signature for the job and it catches them completely by surprise if done correctly.

Otherwise, a mortar team will set up a firing position and either use direct lay or will try shooting without registration (zeroing) hoping for a near accurate hit. After they shoot, they displace before the rounds impact.

Hope this helps.

With a FPV drone. You can hear what direction that short is coming from.
>>
>>64378520
>access to pretty good field artillery support but that's strictly it
There's no universe in AD2025 where you have access to field guns but no ability to do counterbattery at all.
>>64377941
>how can you determine what direction mortar fire is coming from and from how far away?
Mostly with your ears and eyes. I have seen doctrine that covers this although it was from some time ago. It's simple enough to figure out for yourself in a case with simple terrain, provided you only have a few enemy possible enemy mortar systems and you know their tab data.
>>
>>64381610
It'd probably be better if you hadn't told him this method of azimuth finding (or any specific method) so directly and left it vague enough that if he's genuinely a westerner he could have learned it for himself based in the info.

I used to take for granted that every possible threat military or militia in the world had the same grasp of basics as we do, but as I've gotten older and seen more wars I've realised they really don't and also don't seem to have the ability to discover or learn any of them for themselves, and that the anglosphere and some of western europe enjoys massive advantages in even low tech infantry combat because of this.

>As a guerilla infantry

As a guerilla, your response 99% of the time to being shot at is to leave.
>>
>>64379970
>the fact that they have to escalate up the chain means its harder for them to just manufacture cause from whole cloth
The reason they had to escalate becomes the cause.
Sure, there might have been an illegal search that started shit but once the ball is rolling, your response to the illegal search becomes its own crime and you can't get away with shit.
Plus you won't be alive to sue or even talk so cops/feds can write whatever they like in the report.

>>64377941
Nigger you're crazy if you thjnk youre dealing with anything bigger than an 88mm mortar team. 120mm mortars have double the range of an 88mm, are strapped to a whole ass fucking vehicle, and have a whole fucking company detatchment that exists solely to protect the mortars.

Geurilla infantry doesn't even go out to do the fucking fight you retard, they're at worst a recon element. Learn your irregular warfare tactics, cause holy shit.
>>
>>64378457
Expensive, need to be relatively close, if identified the opponent will be lobbing radar seeking munitions at you.
They're for dabbing on sandniggers, not as great in a peer conflict on a transparent battlefield
>>
>>64379970
>harder for them to just manufacture cause
You retard, they often don't cite any cause. A mortar team of crazies will 100% get the air force dropping shit, no question.
So what do YOU think would happen, they just back off to a mile or some shit? Fuckin might as well MOAB the cocks.

No, we started leaking X-Planes around then. You know we made a dogshit flying UFO for pictures in the 70s right? Modern attempt to create the sci fi you think we had all look like a dandelion seed and they're still kinda shit.

First off you don't smoke yourself, you smoke the enemy right in his face. Smoking yourself comes from IR tank covering grenades, "hot smoke" confuses top attack seekers.
Why would you reduce your own vision and situational awareness? You smoke the enemy and reduce his.

>As guerilla infantry without advanced intel how can you determine what direction mortar fire is coming from and from how far away?
Two guys 1 km apart with a compass, a radio and a map. Both report the compass heading the thud of the mortar firing came from, draw those lines on the map, mortar is roughly where they intersect.

>Is there any infantry doctrine for how to face a mortar barrage more in depth than just doing your best to run away or get underground?
A mortar is only as good at hitting you as the spotter is at reporting in the hits along with where you will be when the shells actually land. You need to make the spotters life harder. Either supress them or if you can't you need to stay on the move with constant changes in direction. Most spotters are trained to only fire on stationary targets, but if the ones targeting you are trying to predict where you will be when the shells start landing in anywhere from a minute to five. Getting into concealment before moving so they lose sight of you is also a huge benefit.

or just taking cover in general it did wonders for al-Qaeda.

OP specifically mentioned options other than digging down, but yeah trenches and other fortifications are the best option even as a guerilla force who can't hold ground.
