If you grasped the extended sniffling whine that it is about people liking multiplayer shooters, then it's insufferable.
>>64390592True, I used to have a ton of fun with the vulcan + infinite ammo + invulnerability cheats that you can unlock in 3. What's really weird is that you can STILL DIE with the invulnerability cheat if, IIRC, your/someone's zoomer/hover car blows up and squishes you in some really weird unlikely scenario. I've had it happen a ton of times. I also had a lot of fun with the infinite flight glitch in 3; using infinite light eco cheat, you can press X, press X again to flap wings, press O to use your shield, press X, press O, repeat. The timing is strange as hell but you can have some real fun with it. I wish Jak II had infinite health; if it did, I certainly never unlocked it.Also I have an obsession with Sand Shark. I have plans both to sorta make a real Yellow Blaster (file rip + a lot of repairing holes) as well as a close to full size Sand Shark, as far in the future as those likely are, if ever.

i spent hundreds of hours for this game. truly epic shit
>>64390583It's the videogame equivalent of a straw man argument
This seems like the place to ask for overly specific shit. Most of the thread is vehicle/air sims and shooters, but are there any strategy type games you anons know of enjoy for "simulating" ground war with mixed units? Doesn't have to be at a specific small scale or without a few layers of abstraction, but turn based or RTwP is ideal since I'm an old fart who's willing to learn mechanics but might not have the reaction times for RTS. Basically something that lets you throw in a map and units and play around simulating stuff like "How would you defend a tiny South African country/Seaworld/Pennsylvania from X type of opponent, your budget is X dollarydoos" type threads.
>>64392979Combat Mission
>>64388165It's always been funny that the WP moment is the big "no u are the bad guy" moment. But later on there's a sequence when you're chasing some of the bad guys through an old aquarium being used to store the last remaining drinkable water in the entire city, and you casually shoot the place up and doom all the survivors in the city to death. That sequence is entirely within the players control, and it never gets brought up at the end.
>>64393012The WP section was just so badly done. There's no reason to hit the civilians outside of the game forcing it. It forces one vehicle to be on a bridge above the civilians, and if you drop the WP so it will hit just the vehicle that specific mortar will be twice the normal radius.
>>64392979There are WinSPMBT scenarios like that I guess, I specifically remember a campaign called African Abattoir where you played as an African warlord trying to conquer a country with a bunch of cheap shitty units
>>64392979>willing to learn mechanics but might not have the reaction times for RTS. Basically something that lets you throw in a map and units and play around simulating stuff like "How would you defend a tiny South African country/Seaworld/Pennsylvania from X type of opponent, your budget is X dollarydoos"Hearts Of Iron

>>64393205>more "map painter" and less "low intensity war."yes, in the sense that the smallest tactical land unit in battle is really a brigadehowever, it is indeed the game which has least emphasis on>reaction timesand mainly revolves around>countryand>dollarydoomanagement, as specifiedCompany Of Heroes, Wargame Red Dragon and WARNO are good RTT games which de-emphasise reaction time as far as the genre is possible, i.e. unit composition and tactical micro is way way more important, but have only bog-standard RTS economy managementthe best game with a modicum of tactical combat that mainly involves managing a country for war is HOI, basically

>>64390583I think it's the opposite. Nobody would be mad at SOTL if it wasn't for the entire community of mouthbreathers glazing what was a mid game even for 2010s standards. It's the A-10 of games. The seethe people have against A-10s isn't even about the plane, it's how grating it is to see people posting the "BRRRRT" meme for the billionth time or going on a spiel about how "mah boots on the ground" will fall to their knees and bald eagles will cry once they get retired. It's baby's first "2deep4me" game and it has captivated an audience that didn't experience better game design or doesn't get the subtlety of better games.>>64389684>>64390337>>64393032I've been saying this forever but the first Homefront game predates SOTL and it has a better WP scene. While the WP is still scripted it's deployed against North Korean forces and when a bunch of screaming burning Norks are running away from the impact area one of your squadmates (the woman, of course) starts pleading for you to shoot them to spare them from an agonizing death.I assume you don't care about spoilers but in the missions prior to this one you come across several situations:- A local highschool is being used as a refugee camps and you see starving kids begging for food- The track and field behind the highschool has several mass graves and when Nork helicopters fly overhead for landing you're forced to jump into a pile of corpses of American civilians and hide under them- Where did the WP shells come from? One of the resistance members says they're North Korean and they had just intercepted a train car moving WP ammo to be used in cities still resisting occupation. Now, I don't know about you but a screaming bitch on my earpiece telling me I need to give the Norks a quick death can get fucked.SOTL makes you use WP and chastises you for a war crime you didn't intent to commit.Homefront not only made me want to use the WP, it made me wish I could inflict even more pain on the Norks.

>>64391538>>64391470Tarkov just isn't fun. If you strip away all the social media hypebeasts, the gameplay loop that is essentially gambling and the desire for sick loot (that you'll never use anyways) and you look at how you actually spend time playing the game you realize the game is soulless. You don't actually have a reason to do anything; you do quests to do more quests to buy items so you can do more quests so that one day, after 500 hours of grinding, you can unlock that thing that some streamer made look really cool, only to realize it brings you absolutely no joy whatsoever and you were having more fun coveting it than you ever will having it.
Playing the demo right now, it's pretty good.
>>64392979>>64394547 kinda fits the bill. It's Scifi, but along the lines of something like Aliens, so most weaponry is actually just stuff you can find today. Also a bit different from a lot of turn-based systems in that it's platoon- to company-sized engagements with fireteams and vehicles as the units you command, and both sides taking turns to activate single units rather than full IGOUGO.Also it's a free demo, so why not try?
>>64394547Seems like it will be fun, but I'm not really interested in the demo beyond playing the first mission. They give you what you need to see what the game will have to offer, but it tells you very little about how it will play long term because all the actual management is roped off
>>64394669Eh, kinda. The missions do give extra loot to try out and you can upgrade your squad leaders, and they just added a second operation and more stuff in a patch today.
>>64393480gaym?
>>64390432Yeah. The early ones got a Steam re-release. Maybe they fixed some compatibility issues with modern systems? I like those even with the cartoonish models, there's interesting gameplay and a really wide stretch of theatres of action and models. Barbarossa to Berlin has 1941 battles that weren't in Red Thunder, and the Winter War.>>64392830That's the whole Blitzkrieg extended universe, right? I've watched some videos and it's a level of micro-management that looks crazy.https://youtu.be/QbEpXceeHoM>>64392979>>64393038I'd say the Combat Mission games are my favorite for company and battalion-sized sims, but WINSBMT is cool, it has a lot of random tiny country wars and you can randomize it and build whatever with the mission editor. There are people who have made scenarios taking place in Rhodesia and South Africa and so forth. Also there's The Operational Art of War IV, which is like an operation-level map game. It's more abstracted to lower level units being battalions rather than companies or platoons, but it's below the level of a grand strategy game like Hearts or Iron or something.
>>64394717Spellcross. Kinda janky but really fun turn-based strategy game by a couple guys who would later be bought up by Bohemia Interactive.

It's also nice because of the sheer breadth of units, making things like radar, sonar, stealth, jamming, spotting for artillery, and so on really important. >>64400100Escalation runs on the same engine as Total Annihilation but it's been updated to support modern screen resolutions, bigger maps, and more units. It has the most complexity and depth of all the TA mods and inspired games. Only real downside, if you care, is that it uses the OG graphics. There are a ton of new units compared to the original TA, and older ones have been re-balanced. They also added features like the ability to upgrade units at their respective factories. For example the upgraded Pyro gets a second flamethrower, the upgraded Bulldog gets a 3rd cannon, etc.
>>64401082>the OG graphicsI was a huge fan of TotalA back in the days. I remember, since I was a poorfag, I couldn't afford a PC with enough RAM to use the bigger maps. I had a schoolfriend who was a lot into that game as well and his dad worked with computer hardware, so he had two PCs that ran the game very good, and I remember playing it in LAN over fucking coaxial cable network. The childhood memories of afternoons up to almost dinner where my mom scolded me when getting back late, no phones no messages. Then I really loved Supreme Commander (not the sequel that ruined the very base concept) and, while I got em, never played the "spiritual" successor planetary annhilation titans. To this day, I still listen sometimes to the AWESOME orchestral soundtrack of the game. I have the original CDs too. Brings me back to a time where RTS games were considered top tier, not it's just soulless AAAAAAA+++ graphics games with little no no soul at all. Fuck I'm old, too.

>>64400227Based. I wish Nations at War had taken off like that stupid realistic one that became its own standalone thing. That was an EXCELLENT mod. But the launcher crashes and recompiles all the time now, and the AI is too good with all the upgrades to the game now. The shooting mechanics are so nice now, but nobody plays it and now the AI can clip your left nut off with a 9mm before you see them lmao. Going back and slinging nukes around is still fun though. Ah well. Best mod, but n

>>64396496Far Cry 2 was fucking kino and based you faggot.
>>64396496I agree with this anon. Far Cry 2 was rightfully shit on when it was released because it was terrible. Only redditor hipsters act like its good. The truth is the game was buggy, broken and completely unfinished. Guns, driving and the world were all shit.
>Far Cry 2 was rightfully shit onYes and no. People were complaining about:>niggerjeeps>mechanic simulator 2008>non-functioning stealth>another piss filter gameWhich were bad and rightfully complained about, however unlike (you) I was around when FC2 threads were still fresh and I know that people liked the direction that franchise took. All of the above were later fixed by mods btw. Also attention whoring contrarians deserve no (you)s.
>>64404240piss filter was actually okay for once because Africa
>>64404240>Le mods fix itNot a defense. The only real contrarians is anyone who claims its some sort of masterpiece when its clearly not. Far Cry 2 only started to get appraised better as more and more Far Cry games got released starting with Far Cry 3 a.k.a the starting period of Ubitowers. Its just a bad game at the end of the day where the negatives drown out any positives and thinking its great means you've got shit taste. Simple as.
With the right mods, Battletech is a fantastic /k/ game. Nothing like crushing a lance of mechs with tanks and BA
>>64393546>>64399730IT ain't much anons, but I can highly recommend some fantastic mods for EAW.The highest tier ones are Awakening of the Rebellion and Thrawn's Revenge.AOTR is really hard and you absolutely cannot brute force space battles, you have actually give a shit about space battles and it introduces a ton of mechanics.Thrawn's revenge is a bit closer to vanilla but has a bunch of new mechanics and heroes. It's actually the most ambitious mod, it aims to completely adapt every era of the EU post ROTJ. It's slow going, due to other side projects, but it's really damn impressive. Also SSDs are real powerhouses now.Thrawn's Revenge has two sub mods, Reven's revenge, still in beta, and Fall of the Republic. Those take place in the Old Republic and Clone Wars respectively. If you want a more close to Vanilla version of the Clone Wars, try Republic at War.I'd really suggest checking out the modding scene it is super alive and well.Part of this is that Petroglyph still puts out updates to the game to enhance what modders can do and to make it easier for them. They even changed the game from 32 bit to 64 bit just to help. They want to make a sequel, etc., but Disney won't say yes.So, in that absence, they're doing what they can to make things easier for modders.

>>64408289Syrian Warfare has that too. Capturing the T55 in the 2nd mission makes the 3rd a lot easier. The catch is that your random dudes can't man the tank, you have to actually have the foresight to bring the appropriate tank crew.

>>64388073Arma reforger is actually shaping up to be a pretty decent casual milsimy game. I know some people don't like the crossplay and 'immersion' breaking mods but it's really fucking good for just kicking back and shooting cunts after work. Even with the tags at distance I just find ways to help it with my own immersion. If no tags, cool it's just more realistic. If there is tags, I just pretend I'm in battletech on some random world that's similar to ours having a civil war but with more advanced tech to explain 'huds'. Can be real good fun.
