Most space does not have people in it. Therefor the probability of me hitting someone is low unless I'm aiming at them. And that shot did not fail. It killed Platt. He died slowly of blood loss. Only hits to the central nervous system produce immediate incapacitation. Platt's final wound hit the spine but at that point he was probably already unconscious from blood loss.
